ELIJAH P’S BURGERS & BREWS

TABLE FOR TWO Slip away for relaxed fine dining with a view of Alton’s Clark Bridge at Gentelin’s on Broadway. Alton native Chef Ryan Gentelin brings an array of eclectic flavors to popular dishes, such as the wild mushroom toasted ravioli, chili rubbed pork ribeye and butterscotch and walnut bread pudding.

LOCAL

FAMILY-STYLE Every day is a “Sunday Supper” dining experience when you gather at Pere Marquette Lodge Restaurant in Grafton. The Family-Style Chicken Dinner is a visitor favorite featuring a half pound of fried chicken with sides served family-style – mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable of the day, coleslaw, warm rolls and butter.

FAVORITES Experience the local flavors dining at some of these establishments known as the local favorites. The locals know where to find the best of the best, and now you do, too!

ON THE RIVER Every day is a party when you’re kicked back riverside and enjoying the open air dining at The Loading Dock in Grafton. The atmosphere is nothing but fun with live music rocking the dock all weekend long and good eats, like the dockside salsa, BBQ pulled pork, catfish fritters and fish tacos – all with a relaxing river view!

HOT FISH It doesn’t get much more local than the hot fish sandwich in Grafton, and the words “Hot Fish” in big red letters on the side of the Beasley Fish Stand building signify this is the place to be! Sit at a picnic table along the Mississippi River in Grafton and order up a “hot fish” sandwich – buffalo or catfish with homemade coleslaw on the side.

CHEAP EATS Want a cold beer and cheap eats? Look no further than Alton’s Fast Eddie’s Bon-Air. The beer is served ice cold, and the menu is simple and satisfying at prices that never change – $1.99 half-pound Fat Eddie Burger, shish-kabobs, bratwurst, fries and boiled shrimp.

LADIES’ LUNCH

SMOKIN' HOT You aren’t voted the “Best BBQ” by the locals unless you bring a lot of love and flavor to the pit. Jeff and Angie Carver of Carver’s Southern-Style BBQ in Godfrey do just that each time they prepare their famous pulled pork. It’s dry rub seasoned, slow-cooked over hickory fire and always served with homemade sauce and a smile on the side.

3 1-800-258-6645

Gathering with the girlfriends? The menu at Josephine’s Tea Room & Gift Shops in Godfrey features generous portions of soups, salads and sandwiches, such as the everpopular Crystal Bowl Salad – layers of fresh fruit, chunks of white chicken and lettuce, topped with Bleu cheese and sunflower seeds. Don’t be surprised if you see a few guys, too!

LATE NIGHT HAUNTS Enjoy a little late night dining or cap off your evening with a martini stop off at Bossanova Restaurant & Lounge in Downtown Alton. The dining menu offers an eclectic array of salads, entrees and delicious pizzettes. Check out Elijah P’s Burgers & Brews with more than 60 beers on tap and great outdoor patio dining.

CASTELLI’S RESTAURANT AT 255

IT'S GREEK TO ME

DINING

TRADITIONS

Angelo Boukas always wanted to open a Greek taverna featuring a menu of family recipes served at his table growing up. Boukas is a not a stranger to the restaurant business; his family has owned GB Grill next door in Alton since it opened in 1910. At Jimmy the Greek’s, guests can enjoy an authentic Greek dining experience with a variety of dishes – gyro sandwiches, flatbreads, dolmades, moussaka, lamb chops and baklava.

EAT YOUR DESSERT FIRST

Gathering around the table is a family affair. These family-owned favorites where owners greet you at the door, family recipes fill the menus and flavors have stood the test of time, are sure to become a dining tradition each time you visit.

Take a step back in time at Alton’s My Just Desserts, where the dining room features an eclectic array of antique tables and mismatched chairs, drinks are served in Mason jars, and wait staff always wear a smile. Since 1989, Ann Badasch has been serving up more than 150 of her family recipes. Contrary to the restaurant’s name, their claim to fame was none other than the half-pound chicken salad sandwich. Lunch specials change daily and between nine and 13 different flavors of pie are baked each morning, with Mrs. Ledbetter’s German Chocolate Pie, Apple Praline Pie and Tollhouse Brownies topping the list of favorites. The locals know the secret: Order your dessert first, before they run out!

PASS THE TALK-N-CHIC In August 1937, Alfonso and Teresa Castelli, along with their son Pete, opened Castelli’s Restaurant at 255 in Alton, formerly known as “Moonlight.” Today, the fourth generation is carrying out the family tradition serving up the house secret recipe Talk-N-Chic™ fried chicken, famous “Roman” house salad and handmade toasted ravioli – a regional delicacy. Steaks, chops, seafood and pastas round out the menu appealing to all palates.

CATCH OF THE DAY James Seib spent 40 years as a commercial fisherman, gathering the limestone rock and creek rock used to build Grafton’s Fin Inn. Since 1981, guests have been entranced as they slide into their table beside one of the four 2,000-gallon fish tanks, home to numerous fish species native to the Mississippi River. Owned and operated by Seib’s children, the Fin Inn offers everything from turtle soup and frog legs to catfish fritters and buffalo fish sandwiches.

5 #ExploreGreatRivers

OUR FAVORITE CORNER Johnson’s Corner is home of the “original pork tenderloin sandwich,” which is easily the size of a plate! Order it with a side of homemade onion rings, and you’ll know why this is one of Alton’s best kept secrets. While Jimmy Johnson isn’t about to change the house specials at this deeply-rooted local bar and restaurant, he is trying a few new dishes, like the homemade brick oven pizza, to keep the menu fresh and the regulars coming back for more.

VIVA ITALIA Since 1954, Tony’s Restaurant has been owned and operated by the Tony and Edie Ventimiglia family of Alton. From the very start, it was a family affair as Edie’s mother and sister helped in the kitchen to serve homemade pasta entrees and pizza. Today, Tony’s is famous for their Pepperloin Steak – a marinated beef tenderloin rolled in cracked black pepper, grilled to perfection and drizzled with garlic butter. And, still, they continue to carry on the family tradition with a menu featuring more than 20 homemade specialty pastas and pizzas served in the Pasta and Pizza House.
