A River's Course ~ THROUGH ~

HISTORY

18

From the beginning of time, people have been drawn to the rivers as a starting point for settlement, exploration, discovery, growth and prosperity. Ancient civilizations established roots on the river’s banks, explorers departed on epic journeys at the river’s mouth and memorable speeches were made with the river mighty waters flowing in the background. Here the intermingling of the Illinois, Missouri and Mississippi rivers over time has led to a confluence of ideas and historic moments shaping the fate of our region and turning points in time for our nation. Discover the stories waiting to be told where the rivers meet the road.

Flowing through TIME ICE AGE Beginning with the Ice Age, the forces that formed the river can be traced to ancient glaciers pushing their way down over most of Illinois. Remnants of the period can still be seen etched into the 300-foot ivory bluffs hugging the river and towering above the road along the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway. The best place to experience the layers of bluff formation is at Great Rivers Park in Godfrey, located five miles from Downtown Alton on Illinois Route 100. EARLY EXPLORATION The first modern-day explorers on the Mississippi, Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet, led the first French expedition down the Mississippi River in 1673, seeking a route to the Pacific Ocean. Though they never reached the ocean, the journey was considered a success for the established relationships with Native American tribes. A cross, visible just north of Grafton near Brussels Ferry, commemorates the explorers as the first to land at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Location: Marquette Cross, Illinois Route 100, Grafton History & Museums | VisitAlton.com | 1-800-258-6645

PIASA BIRD While traveling the Mississippi River, Father Marquette wrote in his journal a detailed description of the painting of the Piasa Bird on the bluffs. The legend of the Piasa Bird – “bird that devours men” – and its connection to the Native Americans continues to be a local and visitor favorite. Stop to see a replica of the painting at Piasa Park and learn the story of this treasured legend that you will never forget. JOURNEY WEST: LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION In the depths of winter on Dec. 12, 1803, Captains Meriwhether Lewis and William Clark gathered 45 men for a military expedition and established the Camp River Dubois in presentday Hartford, Illinois. They would spend the winter performing drills and preparing for the journey of westward expansion, setting forth from the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers on May 14, 1804. Visitors can experience the Illinois side of the story at the Lewis & Clark State Historic site in Hartford, site number one on the National Lewis & Clark Trail. Then, complete the journey with Lewis & Clark with views of the confluence from 150-feet in the air at the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower.

Towering 150 feet above the confluence of two of America’s greatest rivers, the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower showcases the meeting of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Tours are available for three levels of the tower where visitors can see the natural majesty of the region and vistas of Downtown St. Louis, Alton and other local communities. 50-foot level: See the great 12-foot man-made levy which holds back the waters of the two great rivers

STEAMBOATS AND RIVER INDUSTRY In the early 1800s, Alton was known as a bustling river port with thousands of steamboats docking here and transporting goods as far as New Orleans. Today, the river remains a super highway for transporting goods. Visitors can see the river in action as commercial barges carrying asphalt, corn, soybeans and other commodities pass through the Melvin Price Locks & Dam 26, one of the largest locks on the Mississippi River. Guided tours to the top of the dam (8 stories high) are offered daily so visitors can see towboats and barges as they push their way through this incredible structure.

While you are there, check out the interactive displays at the National Great Rivers Museum and discover how the river has shaped the ecology, people, culture and economy throughout time.

EDUCATIONAL ROOTS TAKE HOLD In addition to industrial growth, higher education systems were developed - from military academies to post-secondary education just for women. Monticello Seminary for Women New England sea captain Benjamin Godfrey founded and built the Monticello Seminary for women as a means to give his daughters a Christian education in 1838. Now home to Lewis & Clark Community College, this campus houses landmarks like the Benjamin Godfrey Chapel, built in 1854 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors enjoy strolling through this historic campus to view sculptures, artwork, architecture and gardens. 5800 Godfrey Road, Godfrey I (618) 468-7000 Shurtleff College & Western Military Academy Upper Alton became an educational haven in the 1800s, serving as the home to Shurtleff College in 1827 and Western Military Academy in 1879. One of Shurtleff College’s most famous graduates was Robert Wadlow, the tallest man to ever walk the earth at 8 feet, 11.1 inches tall. Today, visitors will find a life-size statue of Wadlow on the campus, which is now home to SIUE Dental School. The history of Alton’s educational institutions and a number of artifacts from Wadlow’s life can be viewed at the Alton Museum of History & Art. ‘One of the Most Haunted Small Towns in America’ Haunted Alton...History haunts us, and it is definitely haunting Alton, Illinois, "One of the Most Haunted Small Towns in America." A sordid past of murder, war, death and destruction has led to Alton’s haunted present. Several locations that are noted to be extremely haunted have been featured on television shows on the Travel Channel and Syfy Channel. Thousands of visitors and paranormal investigators have visited the grounds of the notorious McPike Mansion claiming spirits still roam this property. Some claim the haunts date back to the property before the mansion was even built with Native American ghosts and a residue from a possible Underground Railroad stop. Other mysterious stories include servants of the building, a cook in the kitchen and a strange death of a woman in the bathtub. Some even believe that Eleanor and Henry McPike still roam the corridors of their former home. All total, more than 11 different spirits have been experienced in recent years.

Cap the evening off beckoning the afterworld through a sÊance and tarot card readings. MineralSpringsHauntedTours.com (866) 465-3205 McPike Mansion is readily known today in paranormal circles for its hauntings. The grounds are often visited by ghost hunters and haunted tour groups in the area.
