The lifeboats work the coasts of Essex and Suffolk, as well as the rivers Stour, Orwell and Deben, the Walton Backwaters and the Thames estuary south of Harwich. Nicholas Leach, editor of Ships Monthly, tells the story of the various Harwich lifeboats, their crews and the daring rescues they have performed since the first lifeboat was established in the 1820s. Perhaps one of the most infamous of the wrecks was that of the German passenger liner Deutschland, which saw the founding of an RNLI station in Harwich in 1876. Unusually, for many years, Harwich did not have an operational lifeboat station, but when the lifeboat was active, it was always busy. Harwich was, though, the first RNLI station to have a steam lifeboat and one of the first motor lifeboats was sent to Harwich on its trials. The first 17m Severn lifeboat to see active service was allocated to Harwich too and its Severn vessel has seen service as far as Zeebrugge. Many notable rescues have been performed by Harwich lifeboat crews, and sixteen silver and four bronze medals have been awarded since 1829. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The stories that go with lifeboats and their crews are those of courage, sacrifice, community and our coastline. No matter if one is on holiday by the coast, or living inland, we are always aware of the work these brave crews do, and also aware of the tremendous affection the RNLI has throughout the whole of the British Isles. An island race appreciates those who risk their lives continually to help those endangered at sea. May-Day! May-Day! showcases the work, over many years, that the RNLI crews have undertaken, using the technology and training of their time to go out into dangerous waters to rescue people. It contains a great deal of useful/technical information to give the reader all the background information to the science of saving lives at sea. The RNLI is close to the hearts of the British public, who want to know more about their work today, but also historically how they have evolved. With archive material, first-person interviews of station commanders, rescuers, etc. plus scientific illustrations and maps, this book will be the first to bring together the history and technology, people and crews, triumphs and disasters of the RNLI together in one book.

At age 17 he became the youngest helicopter pilot to ever serve in the Royal Navy. By age 25 he was the most decorated peacetime naval pilot in history. For the Navy's Search and Rescue pilots, getting to work is both an adventure and an ordeal. Whether rescuing a wounded fighter pilot who has ditched in the sea, saving desperate survivors from a sinking ship, or picking up a grievously ill crewman from the deck of a nuclear-armed submarine that is playing a cat-and-mouse game with the Soviet navy, Jerry Grayson has lived a life of unparalleled excitement and adventure. His finest hour came during the infamous Fastnet Yacht Race of 1979 in which 25 yachts were lost. When a catastrophic storm enveloped the competitors he and his crew pushed their Wessex helicopter to its absolute limits and put their own lives at risk, flying into hurricane-force winds to winch shipwrecked sailors from heaving tempestuous seas. An investiture at Buckingham Palace with Her Majesty the Queen was the result. Being a Rescue Pilot is a fast-paced career because there is no choice. Lives are at stake and pilots must move and think fast. Jerry Grayson's inside view of this heroic service is as inspirational as it is celebratory. Excitingly told, frequently funny but also very poignant, Jerry's story is not an account of just one man's deeds, it is a salute to all the men and women he worked with who were able to turn tragedies into triumphs. Includes a Foreword by HRH The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

x Description: Considered one of the most treacherous areas of Britain's coastline, Land's End has seen many shipwrecks over the past 2,000 years. Where the waters of the Atlantic meet those of the English Channel, storms are frequent and violent and have caught out many a ship. Thousands have been dashed against the rocky granite coast. In 1853, the RNLI established a lifeboat station at nearby Sennen Cove and the people of this small Cornish village have been saving lives ever since. The crews of Sennen have saved many lives in the past 160 years, helping those in distress from sailing dinghies to the largest of cargo ships. Nicholas Leach tells the story of Sennen's lifeboats and the volunteer lifeboat crews who have manned them in this fully revised and updated history of the lifeboat and wrecks off the tip of Cornwall. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It's the winter of 1952 and a ferocious Nor'easter is pounding New England with howling winds and seventy-foot seas. Two oil tankers get caught in the violent storm off Cape Cod, its fury splitting the massive ships in two. Back on shore are four young Coast Guardsmen who are given a suicide mission. They must save the lives of the seamen left stranded in the killer storm, and they have to do it in a tiny lifeboat. The crew is led by Bernie Webber, who has to rely on prayer and the courage of his three crewmembers to pull off the impossible. As Webber and his crew sail into the teeth of the storm, each man comes to the realization that he may not come back alive. They've lost all navigation and have no idea where the stranded seaman are, and have no idea how to get back home. Whether by sheer luck or divine intervention, the crew stumbles upon the wounded ship in the darkness. More than thirty men appear at the railings of the SS Pendleton, all hoping to be saved. Once again, Webber and his crew face a daunting challenge. How can they rescue all these men with their tiny lifeboat? Dripping with suspense and high-stakes human drama, The Finest Hours has incredible and astonishing true-to-life heroism and action-packed rescue scenes. This "marvelous and terrifying yarn" (Los Angeles Times) "deserves a place as a classic of survival at sea". _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

For nearly two hundred years its volunteers have shown courage and selflessness in facing storm and shipwreck to offer assistance. Never taken for granted, these qualities of service transcend the centuries to ring as true now as in the earliest days of the lifeboats. This unprecedented new book is a photographic celebration of every-day bravery, compassion, and outstanding commitment in the toughest of conditions. From the Cornish coasts to the Shetland Isles, we join crewman and photographer Nigel Millard as he travels the length of Britain and Ireland, living and working with his fellow lifeboatmen and accompanying them on their rescue missions. In 2011 alone some 7,976 people were saved by lifeboat crews and a further 17,670 were assisted by the service's new lifeguard units, with lifeboats launching on average almost 20 times a day. This book honours the dedication of generations of hard-working people who generously give their time to those in danger and their families who wait for news while the lifeboats are out a visual tribute to the sea and those who go to it. All around our coasts, and every day of the year, the men and women of the RNLI are on duty's call. Though the RNLI has evolved, through its technologies and size of organisation, its sense of purpose and vision, to end preventable loss of life at sea, is as clear as it was in the very beginning. This is a simple story of a voluntary rescue service, of men and women happy to race to the assistance of strangers at all hours of day or night should ever the need arise. We hope these photographs show something of this spirit. We are encouraged never to forget the bravery, skill and sacrifice of the
people of the RNLI. They are heroes all. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
