Why Gators? Even though Allegheny shares its nickname with two other NCAA schools—the University of Florida and San Francisco State University (their Gators are Golden)—it seems the least likely to identify its student body with “Gators.” An alligator in Meadville, Pa.? Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the abovementioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” (above) made its debut.

A national liberal arts college where 2,100 students with unusual combinations of interests, skills and talents excel.

David V. Wise Center A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among colleges Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the 1997 volleyball season. The multi-million dollar building is the hub of all indoor athletic activities on campus. The 1,200-seat performance arena (right) is home to the basketball and volleyball teams. The Neo-Shok floor is used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat. The arena’s six BPI baskets are among the best and most widely used on the market. The team locker rooms are located at court level and measure approximately 17-x30 feet. Spectators enter the arena at street level on to a spacious concourse. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remarkable amphitheater effect. The bleachers, which include three rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full-length courts for basketball practices.

The weight room (right) houses contemporary fitness equipment, which includes the newest Galileo resistance machines and free weights, stairclimbers, stationary bicycles and other similar fitness machines. The sports forum (right) encompasses most of the upper level of the Wise Center. It is primarily used for open recreation, intramurals and physical education classes. Its 27,000 feet of floor space is roughly three-quarters the size of a football field. A 210-meter, fourlane jogging track is suspended 14 feet above the perimeter of the sports forum.

2010-11 Season Preview

2010-11 Women’s Basketball

A

fter making a run to the championship game in the NCAC tournament in 2008-09, the Allegheny women’s basketball team endured injuries late in the year last season and took a step back finishing 10-16 overall and 7-6 in conference play. Despite the adverse outcome, the 2010-11 Gators, having learned from the experience, are poised to make another deep conference tournament run. The Gators return eight letterwinners from a year ago, including three starters. With a roster boasting five seniors, no juniors and 10 underclassmen, fourth-year head coach Kate Costanzo will rely on her senior class to provide the leadership on and off the court. “Our seniors obviously have the most experience on the team, especially at the guard position,” says Costanzo. “We will need them to set the tone on the court and be a positive example for the underclassmen.” Through the first couple of weeks into camp, Costanzo’s club is showing positive signs of adapting to the style of play the Gators will run in 2010-11. With no true center on the roster, the Gators will feature a smaller lineup, with guards and forwards. In a game where lack of size can create disadvantages against bigger teams, Costanzo has a different take on her team’s size. “We will be a very athletic team. Our style will be to push the tempo and use our size and athleticism as strengths of the team.” Given the makeup of the roster for the Ga-

Jill Gregory All-NCAC First Team 6

tors, getting quality guard play will be paramount to the success of the team. Of the eight returning letterwinners, senior guard Jill Gregory is the most decorated with conference accolades. She garnered All-NCAC Honorable mention as a sophomore and was selected to the All-NCAC First Team as a junior. In both seasons, she led the team in scoring. Last season she was the only Gator to average double-digit points (14.2). Gregory, who sits at 846 career points entering the season, is on track to be the first 1,000 point scorer under the guidance of Costanzo. One of the four team captains, Gregory, who has the ability to generate offense, brings an energy that is contagious and wreaks havoc on the opposition. Costanzo expects her to continue to be the scoring catalyst as well as being a force on defense. Joining Gregory as team captains will be classmates Kat Hritz, Laura Magnelli, and Britni Mohney. Magnelli and Mohney played in every game with Mohney also starting all 26 games last season, and Hritz bolsters the senior leadership. Mohney, who ran the point last year, will be asked to develop into more of a scoring threat. A vocal “coach on the court”, she brings solid defensive skills and a high basketball I.Q. from the point guard position. Magnelli returns as one of the best all-around shooters on the team. Entering into her fourth year on the team, she has either been a sixth man or starter her entire career. Described by Costanzo as a disruptive defensive player, Magnelli will be asked to pull down the tough boards and become an even bigger rebounding presence. Hritz, a three-point sharpshooter, will be a role player coming off the bench this season. A great leader with high basketball knowledge, she has become more of a vocal presence. Nikki Johnson will re-join the team after spending a semester studying abroad last season. Johnson , when on the court, will help anchor the post at the forward position. With no juniors on the team, the 2010-11 Gators will feature 10 underclassmen including four returning sophomores that all gained valuable

Britni Mohney minutes as true freshmen. Heidi Goeller returns as the Gators presence in the post after being a regular starter her rookie campaign. At 6-0, Goeller is athletic and quick at the post position which allows her the ability to work past some of her opposition in the paint. Skilled with a quality turnaround jump shot, she led the team in field goal percentage shooting .459 from the floor. With a year of playing experience under her belt, her numbers project to rise. Becca Bajkowski, Daryl Ford, and Ann Ryan round out the sophomore class and will figure into the rotation. New to the mix will be the six incoming freshmen. The influx of new talent will help push the returnees as several newcomers will push for playing time in their rookie campaigns. Highly touted rookie Saddie Gravatt comes in with a ton of potential, sees the court well, and possesses a great three-point shot. Kendra Pilarski and Erica Restich will join Gravatt in competition for playing time as freshmen. Becky Nowacki, Cecilia Siegel, and Ally Weiner will add depth and Costanzo is counting on them to develop in their rookie campaigns. In a tough and competitive NCAC, Costanzo and the Gators know they will be in for a battle each conference game. With the ultimate goal of making their way back to the top of the NCAC, Costanzo will have her Gators focusing on improving their overall rebounding game, and emphasizing ball control in a league that features scrappy defenses who rebound well.

Head Coach Kate Costanzo Head Coach Kate Costanzo

Kate Costanzo enters her fourth season as the head women’s basketball coach at Allegheny. Costanzo became the eighth head coach in program history after serving as the Gators’ interim coach during the 2007-08 season. In her first full season as the head coach, Costanzo led the team to the NCAC playoffs for the second straight year and advanced to the championship game. The Gators finished with a 16-12 overall record. She also mentored four all-conference players. In her year as the interim head coach, Costanzo led a very young squad to an 1115 finish with an 8-8 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Allegheny closed out the season with six wins in its final eight contests before falling at Denison in the first round of the NCAC Tournament.

North Coast Athletic Conference Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster. Starting in 2011-12, DePauw University will join the NCAC as a full member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 270 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.
