Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

FRANK B. FUHRER FIELD Frank B. Fuhrer Field is home to Allegheny track & field and the crown jewel of the Robertson Athletic Complex. The field is named in honor of Frank B. Fuhrer ‘48, a long-time College supporter and member of Allegheny’s inaugural Hall of Fame class. Renovated in 2006, the facility includes a Field Turf playing surface, a FairPlay scoreboard that utilizes the latest in LED lamp technology, stadium lighting, and an eight-lane, 400-meter, double-bend track with a national award-winning surface. Locker rooms are located inside the stadium, and a fully-equipped athletic training facility is stationed on site. The stadium, which includes seating for 3,700 spectators, has played host to numerous NCAA playoff games as well as last-chance and championship track & field events. Robertson Athletic Complex is a vast athletic facility named in memory of College benefactor and 1905 varsity football letterwinner Andrew Wells Robertson. The facility covers over 200 picturesque acres on a plateau one mile north of campus.

2011-12 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD INDOOR TRAINING FACILITIES One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the track & field team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training and rehab opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all track-related activities.

CROSS COUNTRY FACILITIES Originally known as College Field, Robertson Athletic Complex encompasses 203 acres of outdoor field space to include 102 acres of woodlands, trails for outdoor recreation, and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. Outside of the primary course area, a bevy of unpaved roads and trails, including those weaving around Woodcock Lake and Dam, provide outstanding training conditions for Allegheny’s perennially successful cross country program.

2011-12 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD Brent Wilkerson begins his second year as head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs at Allegheny College. Wilkerson’s appointment filled a void left by the departure of long-time head coach Bill Ross, and follows a successful oneyear stint as an assistant coach for the Gators. In his first full season as commander of the Gators' running corps, Wilkerson led the men's distance relay team to the 2011 NCAA indoor national championship. The men's and women's teams combined to break nine school records and boasted 42 All-Conference performances during the track & field seasons. Earning North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Coach of the Year accoldaes for his leadership in the fall, the men's cross country unit climbed to its highest national ranking in school history (No. 2) before cruising to its seventh straight NCAC team title and sixth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. Wilkerson, who coached 13 conference champions in his first year with the track & field program, followed up last year’s record-breaking cross country season with another outstanding campaign in 2011. Junior Bobby Over became just the second runner in Allegheny history to win the NCAA Mideast Regional, while Wilkerson was able to guide the youth-laden Gators to their seventh straight appearance at the NCAA Championships. In addition, sophomore Kristina Martin qualified for the national championships as an individual, marking Allegheny’s first female runner at the meet in five years.

Since taking over the reins of the Allegheny track & field program prior to the 2010 cross country season, Wilkerson has lifted the men’s cross country program to its highest national ranking ever, delivered a national championship on the track, and coached six All-Americans while being named NCAC Coach of the Year.

As an assistant in 2009-10, Wilkerson helped guide the men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships, while then-sophomore Lauren Butler copped All-American honors in the javelin. Under his direct supervision, the Gators’ track and field unit claimed six conference titles and secured 17 NCAC AllConference accolades. Prior to Allegheny, Wilkerson spent three seasons as the assistant track & field coach at Marietta College, helping the Pioneers crown two conference champions and break 49 school records in 22 events. A 2006 graduate of Wilmington College of Ohio, Wilkerson was a two-time track & field All-American and 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Runner of the Year. He was also a 15-time All-Conference performer and 13-time All-Ohioan for the Quakers. After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Wilmington, he went on to earn a Masters of Education from Marietta this past March. 2011-12 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD AMY MANTUSH Amy Mantush is in her second season as assistant coach for the Gators’ prestigious men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs. She is a 2010 graduate of Bucknell University, where she served as two-time team captain and helped guide the Bison to six conference championships. Mantush began her coaching pursuits on the heels of a highly distinguished collegiate career in which she was twice named Patriot League Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet as well as a 12-time All-Patriot League selection. During her undergraduate tenure, Mantush was a four-time conference champion in the high jump, and captured league titles in the triple jump, long jump, and pentathlon. She also holds school records for both the indoor and outdoor high jump. Mantush, who currently resides in Meadville, Pa., was a double major at Bucknell, and earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Education and Animal Behavior. In 2010, she completed her USATF Level I Certification.

MARKHAM HYDE Markham Hyde begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Gators’ cross country and track and field programs. A 2006 graduate of Utah Valley University, Hyde was a three-time team captain and instrumental in the school’s transition as a Junior College to classification as an NCAA Division I institution. During his tenure with the Wolverines, he set school records in the weight throw and the hammer. He also established a state record in the weight throw while attending Davis high school in Kaysville, Utah. After serving as a student assistant at Utah Valley a year following his graduation, Hyde officially began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, where he earned his Masters of Education. Joining the Storm coaching staff during the team’s first year of Division II competition, Hyde helped the program establish new school records in every throwing event. In 2007-08, Hyde produced eight scorers at the Utah State Track & Field Championships as a member of the coaching staff at Syracuse high school. Markham, wife Brittany, and daughter Lynlee reside in Meadville, Pa.

MARTY GOLDBERG Marty Goldberg is in his 12th year as an assistant coach for the Gators’ track and field program. He is a USATF Master Official and is one of the most experienced and respected officials in the United States. He has worked the Olympic Games, Olympic Trials, National Junior Olympics, National High School Championships, National Masters Championships as well as international meets such as the IAAF Diamond Series meets and the World Masters Championships. He is the associate chief clerk at the prestigious Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden and is a fixture at most NCAA Championships. Goldberg coached the Allegheny men’s soccer team to a school record of 131 wins from 1984-1997. He is responsible for the training of the Gator long sprinters and the sprint relay teams.

ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD w ASSISTANT COACHES

2011-12 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD The Gators flexed their team muscle in the season-opening Bill Sudeck Invitational hosted by Case Western Reserve. Placing its top five in the first eight places, the men's cross country team cruised to the team title for the second consecutive season despite overwhelmingly hot race conditions. Times were a little slow across the board, but with temperatures in the 90's and sweltering humidity, the race was not expected to be decidedly fast. After conceding the top spot, the Gators went 2-3-4 with senior Pat McLaughlin pacing the Allegheny attack with a time of 20:20.47. Bobby Over (20:44.11) edged Kevin Edwards (20:44.67) for third overall in the 6k circuit, while Jack Dennison (7th, 21:21.68) and Mike Vlah (8th, 21:27.22) rounded out the Gators' scoring contingent. Sophomore Kristina Martin delivered a strong statement in her first official race of the season after breaking the tape en route to the individual title on the women’s side. Martin split 15:50.50 to post a 17-second victory on the runner-up. Freshman Andy Sharfman closed fifth overall in 16:44.55, while strong races by Amber Wetsel (9th) and Kelly Gallagher (10th) led to a second-place team finish. Bobby Over delivered a scintillating performance two weeks later in leading Allegheny to a stunning second place finish at the 2011 Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin College. Racing in one of the nation’s largest meets of the weekend, Over established the fastest Bobby Over breaks the tape at NCAA time ever for an Allegheny male on an 8k course en route to third overall in the individual standings. Over closed as the meet’s top collegiate finisher after completing the circuit in Regional Championships 24:35.94. Allegheny also received outstanding results from McLaughlin and Edwards. Both competitors turned in arguably the best races of their careers. McLaughlin finished eighth overall with a time of 25:07.70 and Edwards finished ninth in 25:08.16. Martin manufactured one of the best races of her career in leading the women’s team to a ninth-place finish. Splitting 17:54.20 amid near perfect racing conditions, the Gators’ sophomore standout finished fourth overall in a field that included nearly 200 runners. Allegheny approached the 2011 DeSales Invitational with a team mindset, implementing a workout designed to focus on the team’s ability to pack run during the championship part of the season. The strategy, while hampering the potential of the Gators’ top harriers, worked to perfection in the team standings as the men’s team finished second overall out of 45 teams. Over continued his outstanding campaign, finishing second in the individual standings despite pacing the team’s top seven through the first half of the race. The Gators kept their entire scoring contingent together through the first four kilometers before putting in a 2k surge. Over pulled away from the group in the final stretch and finished in 26:01.29. McLaughlin, who also looked sharp, finished 11th overall and edged out teammate Kevin Edwards. There were 45 teams and 448 runners in a field that included most of the top squads in the region, and the fact that the Gators could place three runners inside the top 15 with a strategic start, served as a strong indicator that the team had high aspirations for a strong postseason. Allegheny’s men’s team finished second at the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Cross Country Championships hosted by Wittenberg University. while the women finished sixth. The men were denied their eighth consecutive league title as Wabash pieced together a strong race en route to its first league title. Edwards and McLaughlin each authored First Team All-Conference performances by finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Both runners split 25:44, although Edwards got the nod at the finish. Over (8th) and junior Mike Vlah (14th) earned Second Team All-Conference honors. The women were led by Martin, who spli 22:45 en route to a fourth-place finish and First Team All-Conference honors. Paced by a stunning performance by junior Bobby Over, Allegheny men’s cross country looked to secure its seventh consecutive berth to the NCAA Division III Championships as the team finished third out of 47 schools at Saturday’s NCAA Mid-East Region Championships hosted by DeSales University. Over provided the heroics in the Gators’ surprising finish as he became the second runner in program history to break the tape at regionals. Over authored an incredible race from start to finish. In the top 10 after the opening mile, he pulled in front of the pack by the end of mile two. Over maintained his lead through the rest of the 8k race, and held off Haverford senior Eric Arnold for the individual title in a tight sprint into the chute. Over split 25:25, and although he finished as the top collegiate finisher at the prestigious Calvin Invitational, Saturday marked his first outright career win. The Gators put the rest of the region on notice after placing three runners in the top 11. Junior Kevin Edwards was fantastic en route to eighth place with a time of 25:48, while senior Pat McLaughlin closed 11th in 25:55. All three runners copped All-Region honors. In the women’s race, Martin led an inspiring effort for the injury-plagued Gators, who capped the year by finishing 10th out of 47 competing schools. Martin paced the Gators by finishing 15th overall in a time of 23:37. Junior Kelly Gallagher also pieced together a terrific race. The third-year harrier continued her resurgence by covering the 6k circuit in 23:55 en route to 27th place in the individual standings. Both runners earned All-Region accolades following the meet.

Kristina Martin

Junior Bobby Over finished 17th overall to lead Allegheny to a 24th-place team finish at the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championships. Over’s finish, which comes on the heels of his announcement as Mideast Region Runner of the Year, marks the fourth consecutive year that Allegheny has produced at least one cross country All-American. Pat McLaughlin served as Allegheny’s second finisher, although he was unable to move much from his first-mile position. McLaughlin was steady throughout the race en route to a time of 25:09.73 and an 82ndplace finish. Serving as the first Allegheny harrier to compete at the NCAA Championships in five years, sophomore Kristina Martin capped an outstanding second season by finishing 176th in the women’s championship race (22:47.11). She came through the first mile in 5:50 and stayed fairly level throughout the 6k circuit.

ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD w 2011-12 PROFILES

2011-12 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD The Allegheny men’s track and field team finished third and fourth at the indoor and outdoor North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, respectively last season. Despite the disappointing team finish, many individuals flourished against the Gators’ highly competitive league slate, including the distance medley relay, which won the conference title before finishing first at the NCAA Championships against the deepest field in championship history. Senior Tony Dipre, who anchored that relay, authored the second-fastest mile time in the nation during the indoor campaign, while Allegheny relied on its superior crew of distance runners to shoulder the load.

Taylor Throckmorton

Although the Gators are coming off another (and surprisingly) strong cross country campaign, this year the team will showcase more balance with potential conference champions in the throws, sprints, and jumps. Leading the contingent is senior captain Taylor Throckmorton, who ran the quarter-leg on Allegheny’s national championship relay. Throckmorton, who broke four school records last season, is strong from 100-400 meters. After splitting 48.60 in the 400m last spring, Throckmorton, who has improved every season, is closing in on an NCAA qualifying berth and will once again be one of the top long sprinters in the league.

events. There’s no question that Allegheny is a little thin after losing All-Americans Dipre, Jeramie Parker, Chris Marker, and Andrew Mahone, but as this past fall showed, the Gators still have plenty left in the tank. Emerging as the leader of the distance crew is junior Bobby Over, who followed up last season’s NCAA qualifying effort and schoolrecord run in the steeplechase with a dominating cross country campaign in which he finished among the top three in six of seven races while earning All-American at the national championship. Over has a legitimate chance at All-American status in the steeple this spring, but also has the speed to contend for a spot at nationals in either the 3,000m or 5,000m during the winter season. Over has developed into one of the most respected distance runners in the region and his success on the track will be a major point of interest for both fans and competitors. On the heels of his best season donning the Blue and Gold, senior Pat McLaughlin also has the look of a break-out performer on the conference level. McLaughlin’s best chance at a national-qualifying effort will have to wait several months as the All-Region harrier is perfectly positioned to author a strong effort in the 10,000m. McLaughlin will still be dangerous at 5,000 meters, as will junior Kevin Edwards, who also blossomed into a credible threat behind an outstanding fall slate. Edwards was the Gators’ top finisher at the NCAC Cross Country Championships and earned All-Region honors following an eighth-place individual finish at the Mideast Regional Championships. His focus will be similar to McLaughlin’s and both will be in the mix for a conference title. Junior Mike Vlah headlines Allegheny’s mid-distance unit. Vlah, who led off the Gators’ national championship distance medley team with a 3:01 split for 1,200 meters as well as the Gators’ national recordbreaking run at Boston’s Valentine Invitational, provides the fuel that could ignite another dangerous relay in 2011-12. He returns as the third-fastest 800m runner in the NCAC and will be a factor in that race at the championship level during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

In addition to Throckmorton’s talent on the track, the Gators hope to leverage his potential in the jumps. At the 2011 NCAC Outdoor Championships, the fourth-year standout finished second overall in the long jump and captured top meet honors at the Point Loma Invitational. Junior teammate Jacob Seigh was runner-up last season at the outdoor conference championships in the triple jump and will be seeking his first individual title during the 2011-12 indoor campaign. Freshman Cameron Day injected life into the Gators’ throwing corps last year, building on a solid indoor season en route to a strong debut at the collegiate level in the javelin. Under the tutelage of assistant coach Markham Hyde, Day, along with other potential break-out sophomores Bill Duncanson and Sean Danaher, has improved his strength and will be in position to compete for a league title in May.

Pat McLaughlin

Although the Gators have made strides in every phase under the reins of second-year head coach Brent Wilkerson, the Blue and Gold is still defined by its impressive ability to re-load in the distance

ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD w 2011-12 PROFILES

2011-12 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD The Allegheny women’s track and field team made remarkable strides last year under the leadership of head coach Brent Wilkerson and assistant coach Amy Mantush. Behind NCAC Field Athlete of the Meet Lauren Butler, the Gators finished second at the 2011 NCAC Indoor Championships, while the team fell just short in replicating their runner-up finish during the outdoor season. A solid cross country season that ended with a great effort at the Mideast Regional Championships lends further credence to Allegheny’s rise. Although the team is short on numbers (an issue the coaching staff has been working hard to remedy), the talent on campus is laying the foundation for a team that has the potential to compete for a coveted conference title.

Kristin Collins

The area that may generate the most excitement is the throws. Butler is the obvious star of the group. A three-time national qualifier in the javelin and two-time All-American, she in focused on making it to nationals in both indoor and outdoor. Butler established a new program record in the shot put last winter while proving that she is a national-level athlete in both events. The difference in these two events demonstrates her remarkable strength, while the team will be relying on her leadership during the upcoming year.

is primed for a break-out year. She also ran the 400m leg on the Gators’ winning distance medley relay at the NCAC Indoor Championships. In the sprints, look for second-year standout Dominique Billingslea to garner most of the headlines. Billingslea was also one of only three freshmen in the finals of the 55m at last year’s conference meet and was a member of the 4x200m and 4x400m scoring relays. Like the men’s team, the women’s squad will benefit greatly by its strength in the distance events. Sophomore Kristina Martin, who is coming off a sterling cross country season, comfortably broke the 18-minute mark in the 5k last indoor season while her 11:08 split in the steeplechase resulted in an NCAA qualifying mark and the second-fastest time in team lore. Martin will provide the Gators with a scoring presence at both 3,000m and 5,000 meters while the coaching staff has high hopes in her second season on the track. The long distance events will be covered by junior Kelly Gallagher and rookie Andy Sharfman. As a previous conference champion in the 10,000m, Gallagher is working hard to return to form after an injury-plagued fall. She looked good during the postseason, while her comeback culminated in her earning All-Region accolades at the Mideast Regional Championships for the second consecutive year. Sharfman has yet to perform at the collegiate level on the track, but if her rookie season on the hills provides any indication, she could have a strong year, specifically in the 10k during the outdoor campaign. A large contingent of new arrivals will be working together in providing an identity for the mid-distance crew this year. That group includes sophomore Suzanna Kearns, who was lost last season to injury, and first-year runners Elisabeth McDonald, Emma Loniewski, and Alexandra DiPerna.

Kristin Collins joins Butler as the only returning senior on the team. Collins has been throwing exceptionally well in the weight during the preseason and is gearing up for an All-Conference season. While she is strong in the weight, Collins is even better in the hammer. The fourth-year competitor earned All-Conference Honorable Mentions honors against a stacked contingent from national power OWU while delivering the second-best performance in program history. In addition to Butler and Collins, sophomores Tova Feinberg and Taylor Endress have expressed potential. Feinberg was fourth at the NCAC Outdoor Championships in the hammer while Endress earned All-Conference honors in the javelin. Both athletes add to a deep and robust throws squad that will also include rookie Claire DeLucia.

Kelly Gallagher

Sophomore Sarah Moss leads the charge for Allegheny in the jumps while also providing a lead spark in the long sprints. Moss finished fourth in the high jump at both the NCAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships, but has already cleared 5’2” during the preseason, and

NORTHCOAST.ORG

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member (DePauw University will joins the league beginning in 2011) — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
