David V. Wise Center
ALLEGHENY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among colleges Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the 1997 volleyball season. The multi-million dollar building is the hub of all indoor athletic activities on campus. The 1,200-seat performance arena (right) is home to the basketball and volleyball teams. The Neo-Shok floor is used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat. The arena’s six BPI baskets are among the best and most widely used on the market. The team locker rooms are located at court level and measure approximately 17-x-30 feet. Spectators enter the arena at street level on to a spacious concourse. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remarkable amphitheater effect. The bleachers, which include three rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full-length courts for basketball practices. The first basketball game ever played at the Wise Center, left, took place on November 21, 1997 in the opening round of the Days Inn/Allegheny Tip-Off Tournament. Allegheny faced off with Fredonia State in women’s basketball action, with the hosts coming out on top 75-36. After the Blue Devils picked up the first ever bucket in the new gym, the Gators reeled off a 15-0 run to take the lead for good, including a layup by Chris Stefanini to kick things off. Shannon Keller led all scorers in the game with 18 points, while Sarah Kuhner was the top rebounder with eight. The weight room (right) houses contemporary fitness equipment, which includes the newest Galileo resistance machines and free weights, stairclimbers, stationary bicycles and other similar fitness machines. The sports forum (right) encompasses most of the upper level of the Wise Center. It is primarily used for open recreation, intramurals and physical education classes. Its 27,000 feet of floor space is roughly three-quarters the size of a football field. A 210-meter, four-lane jogging track is suspended 14 feet above the perimeter of the sports forum. Also included in the Wise Center but not pictured: the Mellon Pool, three racquetball courts, an aerobics/dance room, the state-of-the-art athletic training room and all athletic department offices.

Head Coach Kate Costanzo
ALLEGHENY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Head Coach Kate Costanzo In the four seasons at the helm of the Allegheny Women’s Basketball program, Kate Costanzo, has positioned the Gators back to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), and has them primed for a prolonged stay near the top of the league. In two of her first four seasons on the sidelines, she has guided her teams to the championship game in the NCAC Tournament, including a championship game run in 2010-11. That year marked the best in Costanzo’s young career as her 2010-11 team won 17 games, the most wins under Costanzo, and hosted the opening round of the NCAC Tournament against Hiram College. After a convincing home win over Hiram, the Gators would go on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan University in the semi-final round before falling to then unbeaten Denison University in the finals. Costanzo would mentor three more All-NCAC performers in that 2010-11 season, including the NCAC Newcomer of the Year/All-NCAC Second Team selection Erica Restich. Fellow All-NCAC honoree Jill Gregory became just the 11th player in Allegheny history, and the first under Costanzo, to score over 1,000 points in her career. Serving as the interim coach for the 2007-08 season, Costanzo was officially named the head coach in 2008. In her year as the interim head coach, Costanzo led very young squad to an 11-15 finish with an 8-8 mark in the NCAC. Allegheny closed out the season with six wins in its final eight contests before falling at Denison in the first round of the NCAC Tournament.

In addition, Vasta has also been a counselor at numerous basketball camps including Utica College and Westfield State University. During her playing career, Vasta was a three-sport athlete at Eastern Nazarene College as a freshman and sophomore, and two-sport athlete at Utica College as a junior and senior. In her two years at Eastern Nazarene, Vasta was the starting shortstop for the College’s softball team; received rookie of the year (’03) and All-Conference second team honors as a member of the schools soccer team; as well as being the school’s starting point guard, ranking top 25 in the nation in assists per game as a freshmen in 2003. After transferring to Utica for her junior year, Vasta continued to excel. As a member of the Pioneers soccer team, Vasta helped lead Utica to the ECAC tournament in both her junior and senior year, as well as being named an AllConference honorable mention in 2007. As a member of the basketball squad, Vasta helpd Utica reach the NCAA tournament in 2008, winning the conference tournament and being named to the ’08 NYS Women’s Senior All-Star game.
Meaghan Volek is in her fourth year as a student assistant for Allegheny. Volek was one of 12 seniors to be awarded with Allegheny’s Corenerstone Award, given to seniors in recognition of their contributions to the college community.
BASKETBALL AUXILIARY FACILITIES One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.
In addition to her excellence as a competitor and coach, Vasta has been just as valuable off the court. She has been involved in numerous community services including the New York State Special Olympics, Girl Scouts of America, and WBCA Pink Zone. Vasta is currently working on her Master’s degree in Humanities, and is on track for a 2012 graduation date.

2011-12 Season Preview
ALLEGHENY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
T
he 2010-11 season was a bounce-back year for the Allegheny women’s basketball program. The Gators would start fast and never look back, riding the waves all the way to their second NCAC tournament championship game appearance in three seasons. While they would fall just short of their ultimate goal, the fire and determination that led to one of the best seasons in recent memory stays burning beneath the surface; and the women are poised to show the NCAC just how dangerous the 2011-12 Gators can be. The biggest motivation for this season can be found in the 54-72 final score of last season’s NCAC championship game loss to Denison. Allegheny played fantastic defense in the first half, holding the Big Red to just 24 points on 33.3 percent shooting. However, Denison would use a big second half to hold off the Gators and claim its sixth conference title in seven years. “It’s a huge motivation for us,” said Head Coach Kate Costanzo about the loss at the hands of the Big Red. “We’ve played for the NCAC championship two of the past three seasons, so we know there is a lot of work to be done.” The ground work has already started, as each practice is conducted with the end goal in mind. “Our goal is to improve each and every week, and put ourselves in the best possible position at the end of February to go back to the title game,” explained Costanzo. The road got even harder this past summer, as national power DePauw University was granted membership status into the North Coast Athletic Conference for the start of the 2011 fall season. “Our conference got noticeably stronger with the addition of DePauw,” said Costanzo. “Both Denison and DePauw are nationally ranked in the pre-season top 25. While the pre-season rankings don’t necessarily mean all that much, they are recognizing that our conference is very strong.” Last season, the Gators would find themselves in many different styles of contests. There was the 103-100 thrilling overtime victory over Defiance, and numerous games played in the mid to upper 80’s. However, there were also many games which saw the final score end in the mid to low 60’s. Allegheny knows that consistency, and sticking to their offensive scheme, is one of the big keys to any success they hope to have this season. “We have to keep our same offensive style against every team, especially the top teams in our conference,” Costanzo explained. “The teams we struggled with in the past, they don’t stop. If we stop scoring for stretches, they will continue doing what they do and then we’ll have a deficit that is too much to overcome.” “One of our team goals is to be at the top of our conference in scoring offense,” said Costanzo. “That will be a direct result of our up-tempo style; looking to score quickly in transition and having five scorers on the court at all times. It’s a fun way to play, and the players really seem to enjoy it.” The coaching staff has also let it be known that their fun, up-tempo style of offense all starts at the other end on the defensive side of the court. “Our offensive style is a direct result of our full-court, defensive pressure,” explained Costanzo. “Getting turnovers, rebounding the basketball quickly, and getting it down the floor will be a high priority all season.” Last season Allegheny was the top ranked offense in the conference, averaging 72.6 points per game. Unfortunately they were also tied for dead last in scoring defense, allowing an average of 70.4 points per game. The Gators know that in order to take their game to the next step, they have to step up in a big way defensively. “It’s going to take a real commitment to defense, and a better dedication to rebound-
Erica Restich (‘14) ing,” said Costanzo of what Allegheny needs to do to claim their first NCAC championship since 1989. “A lot of the games we lost last year we were out rebounded, and I think a lot of rebounding is a mentality. Some of it is being in the right place, but the rest of it is being aggressive and thinking that every ball is yours.” With the right mentality, and not allowing the opposition as many second chance looks, the Gators defense has the opportunity to look vastly improved from that of last season. Another focal point for Allegheny this pre-season has been staying composed in late-game situations. Last season, the Gators found themselves in 11 games decided by eight points or less, going 8-3 in those contests. The coaching staff knows that the confidence from last year will be a big factor in winning more of those close games this season. “We know that every game we play is going to be highly competitive,” explained Costanzo. “We try to focus on those situations in practice, so that we are raising our confidence in late game situations. Our returners from last season gained confidence from winning some of the close ones, and that is crucial. When it comes down to it, I think a lot of it is just that refuse to lose mentality.” Helping with that refuse to lose mentality will be 2011-12 captains’ junior Hiedi Goeller, junior Ann Ryan, and sophomore Erica Restich. Each one has devoted numerous hours over the off-season to bettering the Gators both on and off the court. “They’re competitors,” said Costanzo of her captain trio. “They want to win, but most importantly they have the respect of their coaches and teammates. I have all the confidence in the world in those three and their ability to lead the team back to the NCAC playoffs.” Goeller was a dominating force in the post last season en route to earning first team all-conference honors for the first time in her career. Her 51.1 shooting percentage was tops in the conference, while her team high 14.7 points per game was good for seventh. Ryan may be the most versatile player on the Allegheny roster, as she will see significant time both inside and out. Averaging 7.2 points, and 4.6 rebounds while seeing action in all 27 contests last season, Ryan is poised for a break out year. The reigning NCAC Newcomer of the Year, Restich was a force to be reckoned with during Allegheny’s stretch run. “She brings a lot to the table,” said Costanzo. “She can create her own shot, create for her teammates, and brings that defensive ball pressure and intensity that we preach.” Restich will see a lot of time, as the Gators graduated three starting guards

from last year’s squad. Junior forward Daryl Ford started in all but on contest for the Gators a season ago, and along with Goeller looks to give Allegheny one of the best front courts in the conference. Ford averaged just shy of 10 points per game last season, and is a force on the glass, averaging a team high 6.9 rebounds per game. Her rebounding skills and ability to run down the court make her one of the Gators most valuable assets. Junior Becca Bajkowski will be back for her third season at Allegheny looking to snag more time at the guard position. Bajkowski spent a majority of time last season in a backup role, averaging 6.8 minutes per contest. But there is no question that the biggest competition will be at guard, especially who will be running the point. “We have three or four players who can run the point,” explained Costanzo. “It’s just a matter of who is going to step up and be that leader on the court that can keep our offense running.” One of the most pleasant surprises so far this preseason, has been the progression of the freshmen, who will help ease the pressure of graduating such a talented senior class. “We are very excited about our freshmen,” said Costanzo. “The four of them have shown great work ethic, and are picking up the offense pretty quickly which has been impressive. Some things are looking really smooth that I wouldn’t have expected looking good so fast.” The final piece to the puzzle lies in the hands of the only senior on the team. Student assistant Meaghan Volek enters her fourth season with the Gators; and while she has never put on a uniform, Volek has been just as intrical in Allegheny’s success as anyone who has stepped onto the court. “Meg has really been the glue that holds us together,” explained Costanzo. “She’s a great student, a Heidi Goeller (‘13) great leader, and she loves the game of basketball. To have somebody like that a part of the program really means a lot.” Coach Costanzo could not emphasize enough how crucial Volek is to not only the
team’s performance, but to Coastanzo’s coaching as well. “She always asks great questions,” said Costanzo. “She makes me a better coach every day just by questioning the things I do.” This fall, Meaghan was one of 12 seniors who were awarded with Allegheny’s prestigious cornerstone award, given to seniors in recognition of their contributions to the college community. The stage seems to be set for the 201112 Allegheny Gators to do some very special things. “We need to believe that we can do it, and we need to shoot for it every day,” explained Costanzo. “If we have that mentality, it will get us to where we want to be.”

North Coast Athletic Conference
ALLEGHENY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster. Starting this season, DePauw University has joined the NCAC as a full member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 270 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. AT H L E T I C C O N F E R E N C E A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports — 11 for men and 11 for women.
