Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-theart Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. The original fields, known then as College Field, were built in 1949 and were renamed in 1962 for Andrew Wells Robertson to honor the year he was named the college’s Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees. Robertson Field, the home of Allegheny Baseball, is located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex. The area was first cleared in the 1950s, and in the late 1980s, Allegheny College built the permanent baseball-only facility. The facility includes a batting cage, which sits along the right-field fence, allowing easy access for ingame use, and two spacious dugouts behind each baseline. During the early part of the spring season, the Gators have the luxury of utilizing two full-length indoor batting cages inside the David V. Wise Sport and Fitness Center. The indoor facilities allows the team to throw live bullpen sessions to hitters and engage in other baseball-related activities.. Images Below: Shot of two full-size indoor batting cages

2011 SEASON PREVIEW
ALLEGHENY BASEBALL With consecutive winning seasons of at least 22 wins, head baseball coach Kelly Swiney enters his third season as the team’s skipper, and will field a team in 2011, that is poised to continue the upward trend of recent years and re-establish Allegheny among the elite baseball programs in the country. “It is our goal and expectation each and every year to get this program back to where it has historically been,” explains Swiney. “In order to accomplish that goal, we have to be consistent throughout the year. In doing that, by the end of the season we should be in a position to make the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament; have the opportunity to win the tournament, and ultimately make the NCAA tournament.” In 2010, Swiney’s second season, the Gators went 25-15 overall and 12-4 in the NCAC; the program’s most overall wins since 2002 (25-9). The 12-4 league mark qualified the Gators for the conference tournament for the first time since 2007. With the return of over half their starting lineup from a year ago, and an experienced pitching staff that boasts two senior arms at the top-end of the rotation, the Gators are tabbed by the league’s head coaches to finish third in the NCAC for the upcoming season. “Overall this year, in all aspects of the game we have the luxury of depth,” remarked Swiney. “This year our lineup is a definite strength. Most of the guys in our lineup, even the underclassmen, got a lot of game experience last year, and that experience will serve us well this year.” Not only does the starting lineup return this year with experience and depth, but it also brings with it an element that has not been there in years past. “When looking at our lineup, from top-to-bottom, we possess a lot of team speed that we will use to our advantage both on offense and defense.” With all things considered, given the names that Swiney will pencil into the lineup card on a game-by-game basis, the expectations he has for this year’s team and the program as a whole are not lofty in the least; rather, they can be very much a reality.
Pitching
Starting Staff -- Pitching has an opportunity to be a viable strength this season. Returning to the mix and anchoring the top-end of the starting staff are the senior arms Mike Pereslucha and David Strawser. Pereslucha is coming back after suffering a season-ending injury in what was to be his final season in 2010. The return of Pereslucha solidifies the Gators’ rotation and gives them a genuine ace of the staff. The right-hander possesses a live fastball, and compliments his heater with a power breaking ball. In two starts last year, Pereslucha held hitters to a .136 batting average and struck
8
out nine batters while maintaining a 3.00 ERA. Strawser, a All-NCAC Second Team selection a year ago for his work on the mound, can be characterized as a true “pitcher” that has great mound presence, remains calm under pressure, and has the ability to throw up to four pitches for strikes. Last year, Strawser was a David Strawser workhorse logging 51.2 innings, making 12 overall appearances with nine starts. In his time on the mound, Strawser recorded the second most strikeouts on the club with 37, and compiled a 4-4 overall record. The starting rotation will also feature rookie Kyle Davis, who will enter the season as the no. three starter. Davis, similar to Strawser, is an intelligent pitcher that works the ball on both sides of the plate. Davis also has the valuable combination of velocity and movement with his fastball. The final conference starting role may see a few arms in the mix, but junior Ben Lowmaster is tabbed to get the first crack at the job. Lowmaster, who also serves as the team’s primary starting catcher, has a quality arm when toeing the rubber. To help make him most effective on the mound, the coaching staff will have to carefully balance his role as a pitcher and starting catcher. Also in the mix to pick up mid-week starts and possibly join the conMike Pereslucha ference rotation are sophomores Frank Brank, Phil Morrissette, and rookies Brandon Ellis and Garrett Morosky. Morosksy is a left-handed option while Brank, Ellis, and Morrissette are right-handers. All four will not only be looked at in the starting rotation, but each will be utilized out of the bullpen as well. Relief – The core of relievers that Swiney will call upon from the bullpen will be young, however, they are also a talented group. One of the top relievers on the club will not emerge from the pen when called upon; rather, sophomore Eric Hansen will march onto the mound from his centerfield spot. Hansen, who did not appear in a game as a pitcher last season, began working in as a pitcher this fall. Already with a great arm in the outfield, his development as a pitcher has been quick, and was
www.alleghenysports.com
impressive during the fall. The top two bullpen arms returning from last year are sophomore Frank Brank and junior Kyle Berns. The lefthanded Berns, in nine appearances and 22.0 innings in relief last season, posted a teamlow 1.59 ERA and punched-out 18 batters. He will be looked to fill the middle relief role once again in 2011. Brank had the secondlowest ERA among relievers and emerged as a reliable relief option in his rookie campaign. In that year, Brank went 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched over seven total appearances and one start. He also led the team in saves with two. Sophomore Jake Forstyk will see time on the bump after losing his rookie season to injury. At 6’7”, Forstyk is the tallest member of pitching staff. A pair of rookies in Samuel Hyun and Mike Pezzone will log innings this year as well, adding to the depth of the staff. “I am excited about the overall depth of the staff; between the starters and the relievers we have valuable experience at the top and have several young options that we are excited about developing,” noted Swiney. “It will be a matter of who steps up for us as the season progresses and eats up the crucial innings late in games.”
Infield
Catchers – Starting behind the dish once again for the Gators is slated to be Lowmaster. A season ago, he was named to the All-NCAC First Team after hitting .389 with 15 doubles and driving in 32 runs. Lowmaster has the potential to hit over .400 as a hitter, and has also developed into a skilled defender behind the plate. To match his experience as the primary backstop, Lowmaster possesses a great arm and is able to control the other team’s running game with his plus-arm. Spelling Lowmaster over the course of a conference weekend, or a fill-in for when he pitches will be either sophomore Frank Triozzi or rookie Shane Regel. Triozzi is more of a defensivelystrong catcher, while Regel has a better bat at the moment. Sophomore Mick Betler will also figure into the mix and add to the catching depth. First Base – Assuming his role as a starter on the right side of the corner infield, and in the middle of the lineup, will be senior Matt Stahl. Already named to the D3baseball.com Preseason All-American Honorable Mention Team and is the only first baseman listed on the
Matt Stahl
2011 MEDIA GUIDE
Second Base – Sophomore Jeff Dassner, who appeared in all 40 games (38 starts) a year ago, will be the opening day second baseman once again. Defensively, he is solid and has range up the middle. With aboveJeff Dassner average speed already in his skill set, the hopes are that he will find his way on base more often and raise his batting average of .302 from a year ago. Batting in the middle third of the lineup, RBI opportunities will be there for Dassner throughout the season. Behind Dassner will be rookie Eddie Mora-Loera. Mora-Loera is a player that hails from a strong high school program in Oakland, Calif. (Bishop O’Dowd High), and with his ability to hit and defensive skills, he will push for playing time as a rookie. Shortstop – A tight battle between a pair of rookies in Jon Boyd and Kyle Davis is being waged to find the starter at shortstop in 2011. Each brings athleticism and talent to the position, making the decision a pleasant problem for the coaching staff. Boyd has a great glove and fields the ball well while having a great knowledge of the game. Davis has a strong arm to compliment his range. Consistent and productive hitting will more than likely be the determining factor in deciding which one becomes the everyday shortstop. Third Base – Anchoring the hot corner this year will be senior captain Aaron Lynch. Lynch is moving to third base after spending most of last year as the shortstop following the season-ending injury to Pereslucha. A bet-
ter fit all around at third base, Lynch will be expected to provide senior leadership, and for his numbers to return to what he put up his first year as a Gator. Backing up Lynch at third base will be rookies Mike Pezzone and Eric Brandt. Pezzone is a great defender with a plus arm. Brandt is a solid hitter. Both will provide significant depth at third.
Outfield
Centerfield – Patrolling centerfield, and leading off will be returning sophomore Eric Hansen. An aggressive player that impacts the game with his bat, speed, and exceptional range, Hansen will be a major key to the production of the remainder of the lineup. A season ago, he was selected as an AllNCAC Second Team performer after having the secondhighest batting average (.409) and on-base percentage (.527) on the team. Hansen also led the team in runs scored (50) and stolen Eric Hansen bases (17). Adding to the depth of centerfield will be rookie Andy Feikls. Late in games to free up the possibility of Hansen closing games, Feikls will be called upon as a defensive replacement given that he is an excellent defensive outfielder. Corner Outfield – Heading into the 2011 season, left field is a fluid position that will see several occupants throughout the year depending upon how other positions solidify and players moving from the field for an appearance on the mound. The leading candidate for the job early in the season is sophomore Phil Morrissette. Morrissette saw part-time action in the outfield a year ago and hit .278 with a homerun and seven RBI in 22 appearances. Morrissette, who swings from the left side, has pop in his bat. Defensively, Morrissette has a plus arm, and will also see time on the mound. Depending upon the outcome of the battle at shortstop, rookie Kyle Davis could become the everyday left fielder to keep his bat in the lineup. Davis, like Morrissette, will also log innings on the mound. Looking to build upon the hot end to his junior season, senior Zack Nichols, will figure to be the starting right fielder in 2011. Nichols brings experience to the field along with a good arm, athleticism, and the potential to hit for power. It will be key for Nichols to jump out to a hot start and maintain consistency in his offensive production. Sophomore James Kim and rookie Joe Pierce will figure into the mix for playing time in the outfield.
Designated Hitter
Senior Mike Pereslucha will serve as the team’s primary designated hitter in 2011. Before going out for the year due to injury, Pereslucha’s bat was red-hot to start the year in 2010. In six games, he hit .545 with 2 homeruns and seven RBI. He was also 2-for-2 in stolen base chances. The Gators will look for him to be a major presence in the middle of the lineup and serve as protection for Stahl, who will hit ahead of him in the lineup. Regel, Morrissette, and Mora-Loera will also be options to serve as the designated hitter pick up pinch hit at bats throughout the season.
Schedule
In 2011, the Gators will be charged with the task of navigating a schedule that features a host of nationally-renowned non-conference opponents, and the always tough slate of conference games. Highlighting the nonconference portion of the schedule will be games against Penn State Behrend, Washington & Jefferson, and UW-Stevens Point. All three qualified for a NCAA Regional last year, and UW-Stevens Point advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament by winning the Midwest Regional. In the wake of the lengthy postseason run, UW-Stevens Point received a no. 2 ranking in the NCBWA /D3baseball.com preseason poll. In that same preseason poll, Penn State Behrend, who was ranked outside of the top-25, appeared on the list of schools that were receiving votes. The matchup with UW-Stevens Point will be among the Gators’ seven scheduled games during their spring break trip to Winter Haven, Fla. The annual trip will be a measuring stick for the Gators as they will also take on perennially-strong schools such as Bowdoin and St. Olaf in a pair of double headers. A change to the format of the conference portion of the schedule will be the doing away with the splitting of the conference into East and West Divisions. Rather, in 2011, all teams in the NCAC will play one another, once, in a one day double header format. One of the big challenges for the Gators in the NCAC will be the College of Wooster. After winning the conference tournament in 2010, the Fighting Scots joined Penn State Behrend and Washington & Jefferson in the Mideast Region last year. Voted as the favorites in the NCAC, the Scots are currently ranked no. 19 in the latest NCBWA/D3baseball.com national rankings. The 2011 season kicks off on the weekend of March 4th with the club traveling south to Myrtle Beach, S.C. playing in four games over three days as part of the Ripken Experience. In those four games, the Gators will face the likes of Catholic University, Penn State-Abington, Penn State-Berks, and Wilkes University.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW
Baseball America Division III Preseason Player Watch List, Stahl is the highest profiled returning hitter on the team. Fueling the preseason accolades was his magnificent junior season in which he was third in the nation, and tops in the NCAC in batting average (.500). In his first two seasons as a regular starter, Stahl has hit over .420 each of those years and is now on pace to set a new career batting average record by season’s end. As a senior and captain, Stahl will be looked upon to be the leader of the offense. Swiney is hopeful that not only Stahl will continue to hit for average, but also that his power numbers will increase. Adding depth at first base will be sophomore Chad Starzer and rookie Paul Nelson.

NCAC
Has coached 10 All-NCAC players, including 2010 NCAC Pitcher of the Year Matt Dishong. Led the 2010 Gators to the NCAC Tournament for the first time since 2007. Posted back-to-back 20-plus wins in a season for the first time since ‘03-’04. As the hitting coach of Amherst and W&J, he helped raise team offensive statistics in several categories As a senior at Allegheny, he hit 17 doubles placing him third on the singleseason list.
Leading up to his successful stint at Amherst, Swiney spent time as an assistant coach at Washington and Jefferson University, Thiel College and King’s College (Pa.). 2001, just a few years removed from his collegiate playing days, marked the beginning of his coaching career with a one-year stay at King’s College. The following year, Swiney became an assistant at Thiel, and remained there until 2004. The 2003 Thiel squad won the program’s first President’s Athletic Conference in 21 years, and broke the school record for wins in a season. During his time at Washington and Jefferson, Swiney helped the baseball team to a 66-28 record in the 2005-06 seasons including a school-record 34 wins in 2006. The team appeared in backto-back ECAC South Region Tournament finals, winning the championship in ’06. Once again as the hitting coach, he helped bolster the team’s offensive statistics, most notably helping raise the team’s batting average from .256 in ’04 to .328 in ’06. In his playing days, Swiney was a three-year starter for the Gators in the outfield, and finished with a .356 career batting average. He ranks third on the all-time list for doubles in a season with 17. He was also named to the NCAC All-Conference Team in 1999 and was a member of the 1997 team that set the school record for victories with 40. Swiney also played on NCAC Championship teams in 1997 and 1999 and took part in three NCAA playoff runs, including two regional runner-up finishes in 1996 and 1997. While at Allegheny, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in managerial economics. In 2008, he received a Master’s degree in Sport Management from California University of Pennsylvania.

2011 MEDIA GUIDE Assistant/Pitching Coach Matthew Mark
Matthew Mark is now in his second season as an assistant baseball coach with the Gators. Last year, in his first season with the Gators, Mark served as the pitching coach, and helped lower the pitching staff’s collective ERA from 5.49 in 2009 to 4.07 in 2010. Mark also helped mentor the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year in Matt Dishong. Under Mark, Dishong posted career-bests in ERA (2.65), wins (5), appearances (14), complete games (4), innings pitched (68.0), strikeouts (72), and batting average against (.238). Prior to Allegheny, Mark spent a year as the assistant varsity football and baseball coach at Indian Creek School in Wintersville, Ohio, where he also served as the behavioral teacher. A 2006 graduate of Washington & Jefferson with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, he was a member of the varsity baseball team for three years, and a captain for two seasons. Mark helped lead the Presidents to PAC Championships in 2004 and 2006.
Mark is also active in the summer months assisting with several Division I baseball camps including the camps at the University of Kentucky, University of Virginia, and the Naval Academy Leadership Camp.
