Allegheny’s 2,100 students are active in social, economic, and environmental issues and work collaboratively with faculty as part of the learning process. The College’s nationally-recognized programs such as the Center for Political Participation, the Center for Experiential Learning, and the Center for Economic and Environmental Development offer powerful and engaging out-of-classroom experiences. medical and law school that are twice the national average. Allegheny’s geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who are able to enjoy biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking.

We’re proud of Allegheny’s beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies. We know that our professors are leading scholars in their fields of study who pride themselves on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it’s our students who make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is.

How do we characterize our students? Though it’s impossible to label them, they do share some common characteristics. You’ll find an abiding passion for learning and life, a spirit of camaraderie and shared inquiry that spans individuals as well as areas of study. You’ll see such a variety of interests and passions and skills that after a while unusual combinations don’t seem so unusual at all.

2011 Season Preview

Allegheny College

6

After a successful 2010 season, in which the Allegheny women’s lacrosse team tied a program record for wins in a season (9), and made their fifth all-time appearance in the NCAC Tournament, the youngest athletic program (est. 1994) at Allegheny enters the 2011 season tabbed to finish third in the NCAC according to the preseason poll voted on by the league coaches. Adding to the revitalized excitement and bolstered expectations is the addition of first-year head coach Stephanie Janice. Janice, who brings a superior pedigree of lacrosse experience both as a collegiate player at Division I Johns Hopkins University and as a coach at the elite club and collegiate levels, will look to continue the recent success of the women’s lacrosse program while raising the bar of expectations at the same time. An energetic young coach, Janice will look to instill that energy as part of the team identity and playing style. With a wealth of experience returning, and a very hard working and motivated group, Janice is looking to set new heights for the program. One of the major forces returning to the attack that will be relied upon heavily in 2011 will be senior Jensen Paterson. The Atlanta, Ga. native enters her senior season as a three-time All-NCAC First Team performer and a two-time Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-West Region selection. She is the school’s all-time leader in career goals (148), is currently second all-time in career points (189) and assists (41), and is the single-season record holder for points with 66. Paterson

brings adept stick-work, vision, and is a talented finisher and shooter. Joining Paterson on the attack will be senior Caitlin Fearon, freshmen Kelly Dickson, and Monique Villanueva. Fearon will be looked to provide senior leadership and to quarterback the attack. Dickson possesses an outstanding shot, and Villanueva will add depth and an element of speed. Making the transition from the attack to the midfield in 2011 will be the 2009 NCAC Newcomer of the Year and two-time All-NCAC selection Kiah Voyer-Colbath. The junior has been an ultra productive goal scorer in her two seasons on the team, averaging 38.5 goals per season, and is making the move to the midfield to capitalize on her speed and athleticism. Playing alongside Voyer-Colbath in the midfield will be returning senior Abby Silvester. A season ago, Silvester was named to the All-NCAC Second Team after a 31-goal, 37-point offensive output. Silvester brings athleticism, speed, and intensity to the midfield, and will be a force all over the field. Junior Becca Crissman, along with newcomers Brennan Maine and Carly Minstermann will see ample time in the midfield, and junior Amber Wetzel will provide depth to the Gator transition and ride. Crissman is defensive-minded, has a tireless work ethic. Maine is a smooth and athletic impact player that will look to challenge for a starting position in the midfield. Minstermann is an energetic and aggressive player, and will assume the role of a defensive midfielder. Wetzel is another defensive-minded midfielder and has tremendous endurance and hustle.

www.alleghenysports.com

As a whole, the Gator’s defense is young, with only two seniors returning in Becca O’Shurak and Colleen Silky. O’Shurak will be the primary net-minder once again. Last year, in her first full year as the starter, O’Shurak made 100 saves and led the defense in groundballs with 27. O’Shurak will serve as the vocal leader of the defense. Silky will be looked to as the quarterback and emotional leader on the defensive end. She was second on the team last year in caused turnovers with 12. Sophomore Noelle Brouillard returns to the defensive mix as a starter from a year ago. Brouillard will be relied upon with a big role on defense this season, as she possesses a great knowledge of the defensive schemes and is a consistent performer. Junior Gabriella Tetelman, along with newcomers Kellee Cribby and Anna Koebley will also challenge for starting positions in the defensive end this season. Tetelman is working herself back from a string of injuries that kept her out her entire freshman year, and half of last year. When healthy, she is a solid positioning defender and provides tremendous leadership. Cribby will figure to play a significant role in her rookie campaign, as she possesses speed and will be looked to in the transition. Koebley will provide depth as a low positional defender and will continue to work on her transition from the high school to college level.

2011 Women’s Lacrosse An energetic young coaching talent with a tremendous background as a competitor, Stephanie Janice became the seventh head coach in the history of the Gator lacrosse program in the fall of 2010. Janice took over the reins of the Allegheny program after spending two seasons as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Goucher College where she was primarily responsible for the attack unit and midfielders. She also played an integral role in all of the day-to-day aspects of running the Gophers’ Division III program by planning practice, implementing game strategies, and successful student-athlete recruitment. The Janice File During her brief tenure at Goucher, she helped produce nine All-Conference players Hometown and a pair of All-Region standouts. Medford Lakes, N.J. (Shawnee HS, ‘03) Janice, who hails from southern New Jersey and was a two-time high school All-American at Shawnee High School, is a 2007 graduate of Johns Hopkins University. She was a four-year starting midfielder for the Division I Blue Jays who, as a senior, was voted the team’s Unsung Hero by her teammates. A member of three NCAA Division I Championship Tournament teams, Janice’s play helped guide Johns Hopkins to the National Semifinals as a senior.

Education

In addition to her accomplishments at the collegiate level, Janice worked with the Cranbook Lacrosse Club in Kent, England in 2007-08. In her two seasons overseas, she coached the Beneden School to a national runner-up finish. In 2010, Janice finished her Masters of Education specializing in Athletic Program Leadership from Goucher College

Roberston Field Complex

Allegheny College

30

Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. The original fields, known then as College Field, were built in 1949 and were renamed in 1962 for Andrew Wells Robertson to honor the year he was named the college’s Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees. Frank B. Fuhrer Field is a multi-purpose facility that was renovated in 2006. Highlights of the renovation include installation of a FieldTurf playing surface, new field lights, a LED scoreboard, and an eight-lane Olympic-style outdoor track. The specialized turf is widely used across NCAA Division I football programs, and the National Football League. The playing facility, named after 1948 Allegheny alum Frank B. Fuhrer, is home to all football, women’s lacrosse, and men’s soccer home contests. The complex is also available to intramurals, club sports, and other campus activities.
