David V Wise Center
A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among colleges Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the 1997 volleyball season. The multi-million dollar building is the hub of all indoor athletic activities on campus. The 1,200-seat performance arena (right) is home to the basketball and volleyball teams. The Neo-Shok floor is used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat. The team locker rooms are located at court level and measure approximately 17-x-30 feet. Spectators enter the arena at street level on to a spacious concourse. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remarkable amphitheater effect. The bleachers, which include three rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full-length courts. The first Allegheny volleyball contest ever held at the Wise Center took place on September 1, 1998. The Gators earned a come from behind 3-2 (12-15, 15-2, 11-15, 15-12, 15-9) victory over visiting Clarion. Bobbi Ruddock paced the Blue and Gold with 34 assists and 14 digs. Wendy Turkovich totaled a teambest 23 digs that match. The weight room houses contemporary fitness equipment, which includes the newest Galileo resistance machines and free weights, stairclimbers, stationary bicycles and other similar fitness machines. The sports forum encompasses most of the upper level of the Wise Center. It is primarily used for open recreation, intramurals and physical education classes. Its 27,000 feet of floor space is roughly three-quarters the size of a football field. A 210-meter, three-lane jogging track is suspended 14 feet above the perimeter of the sports forum. Also included in the Wise Center but not pictured: the Mellon Pool, three racquetball courts, an aerobics/dance room, the state-of-the-art athletic training room and all athletic department offices.
Head Coach Bridget Sheehan
Allegheny College
Gator Volleyball
Head Coach Bridget Sheehan Since coming to Allegheny as the head volleyball coach in the fall of 1986, Bridget Sheehan has built one of the most successful NCAA Division III programs in the country. It did not take long for Sheehan to catapult her program to regional and national prominence. In just her second year at the helm, she led the 1987 squad to a 42-5 record, which included a school-record 37 straight wins, en route to the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The following year was even better as she set a program record for wins with a record of 44-9. In that year the Gators captured the first of four straight North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships. A two-time NCAC Coach of the Year (1987, 1990), Sheehan’s Gators have qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament four times (1987, 1988, 1990, 1991), and compiled a remarkable 573-386 record, an average of nearly 23 wins per season. Allegheny has also been ranked among the nation’s top 20 four times and won four conference championships (198891). Recent history has seen Sheehan’s squads produce achievements never before accomplished at the school. Her 2003 team put together an attack percentage of .317, ranking fifth in the nation at seasons’ end, and shattering the old school mark. That squad went on to set four team records that still stand, and setter Vicki Kajder became the third player under Sheehan to be tabbed as an All-American. In addition to national recognition, 68 all-conference certificates have been handed out to Gators, including three-time NCAC Player of the Year Molly Dietz (1989-91), and 1987 NCAC Co-Player of the Year Carol Frederick. In 2004, Traci Stoner set a pair of firsts for the program becoming the first All-Great Lakes Newcomer of the Year, and also being named the Great Lakes Region Newcomer of the Year that same year. In total Sheehan has mentored eight allregion honorees, and four of those honorees received all-region recognition multiple years. Aside from coaching, Sheehan has been an active member in the volleyball community, serving as a member of several committees including the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III National Ranking Committee, the NCAA Division III All-America Committee, and the NCAA Regional Selection Committee. Prior to coming to Allegheny Sheehan was a coach in the high school ranks, serving as an assistant volleyball coach at Maplewood High School from 1979-82 before she moved on to Cochranton High School where she served as a junior high school basketball coach from 1980-84, and the head volleyball and basketball coach from 1984-86. Sheehan, who graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1977 with a degree in Economics, was a four-year starter in volleyball, and served as the team captain in her senior campaign. She also received a master’s degree in Sports Administration from her alma mater in 1990. In 2008, Sheehan was inducted into the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-ofthe-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes spereate baseball and softball complex’s; one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.
Wright was the starting setter for Penfield (N.Y.) High School where he helped guide the Patriots to consecutive Section 5 championships in 2006 and 2007. A history major with a religious studies minor, Wright has also played club volleyball for the Rochester, N.Y.-based Pace Bootleggers. Wright has worked as a coach and technician at numerous youth volleyball clinics and camps, and he has strong aspirations to continue his involvement in playing and coaching after he graduates.
Allegheny Volleyball Adopts a Highway
On Tuesday, August 23, 2011 the Allegheny women’s volleyball team added a new member for the foreseeable future. The Gators cleaned up a two mile stretch on CR2037, more commonly known as Baldwin street, as part of the adopt-a-highway program.

in 2011. “We are going to key off of those two,” said Sheehan, “and both of them are really stepping it up.” Rounding out the seniors is libero Winnie Wong, who led Allegheny with 563 digs a season ago. Wong, Rothman, and Batdroff combine to give the Gators a solid core of experience within a team that sees 14 underclassmen on the roster. Just like last season, 2011 will see those 14 underclassmen play a vital role in the team’s success. Some of the freshmen have also come into camp and really showed that they have what it takes to contribute early and often. Kristen Dennis, a freshman out of Cory, Pennsylvania has looked good for the Gators, and hopes to help fill the gap for the right side hitting position. “Brynne Hazzard has come in and played some really great ball,” said Sheean. “Katelynn Long, Alyssa Babitt, and Catherine Kasianowicz are all looking really strong defensively. The three of them are showing a lot of good things.” With the experience of last year for the returning players, and a group of talented incoming freshmen, Allegheny looks to start the 2011 season strong. “Our objective right now is to start settling the game down and get some early success with what we’re trying to do as a team,” explained Sheehan. “Then, hopefully we can build off that, and challenge ourselves every day.”

Season Preview
s it is with many athletic programs, change seems to be the one constant. Veteran player’s graduate, while younger players come in and hope to fill their shoes. At Allegheny College; however, there is another constant. That is that head coach Bridget Sheehan will patrol the sidelines for Allegheny volleyball. Since 1986, Sheehan has led the Gators to unchartered heights, all while staying at the school where she got her start 26 years ago. 2011 is yet another year with turnover for the Gators. Five players depart from 2010, while nine freshman hope to make an immediate impact on a team that went 9-23 overall last year, and 5-9 in the NCAC. 2010 marked just the sixth time in program history that Allegheny had failed to qualify for NCAC postseason play since its inception in 1984. That is not to say that all was lost for the Gators last season. Jordan Leopold ’10, was one of two Gators to play in all 119 sets last year, racking up a team high 341 kills and 50 services aces, en route to being selected to the All-NCAC Second Team. Senior middle hitter Caitlin Rothman also saw action in all 119 sets for the Gators, as she added 243 kills and 18 service aces. Her strong play resulted in Rothman being selected NCAC player of the week on October 25, 2010, while also landing her a spot on the All-NCAC Honorable Mention team. She will come into 2011 as team captain, while leading the young squad with not only her play on the court, but her experiences off it. “[Caitlin] is a very focused player who wants to win, wants to be successful, wants the team to do the right thing, and is a great role model,” Sheehan said. “She did a great job in the spring season leading the team, and I expect nothing less this fall.” Joining Rothman upfront is returning outside hitter, and fellow senior Audra Batdroff. Batdroff was second on the team in kills with 261, while adding 114 digs in 117 sets played. Coach Sheehan is expecting big things from her pair of senior hitters

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, Earlham College, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports ‹ 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 1984-85. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA All-America or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
