Tennis Facilities The David V. Wise Center (right) features four indoor courts with a medium-pace polyurethane rubber floor. The Wise Center provides a stateof-the-art indoor facility right on campus, as well as a rain site for matches. Other amenities include a 210-meter indoor track; a 6,000 square foot weight room; state-of-the-art nautilus equipment; racquetball courts; an aerobics/dance studio; a pool and diving well; a performance arena used by the basketball and volleyball teams; and an athletic training room. The Robertson Tennis Complex (below) features 12 lighted courts divided into four banks of three courts, a state-of-the-art sound system and a U.S. Open DecoTurf surface. The new blue and green surface was installed during the summer of 2009. Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Head Coach Jared Luteran Allegheny head coach Jared Luteran enters his 10th season at the College and continues his streak of establishing the Gators as an annual contender in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). During the 2011-12 season, Luteran’s squads saw success both on and off the court. Then-sophomore Patrick Cole earned a regional ranking, following up his NCAC Newcomer of the Year award his freshman year with a second All-NCAC first team selection. The men’s squad finished with a 3-1 conference record, while three tennis athletes between the men’s and women’s teams were named to All-NCAC squads. Carolyn Shetter earned two honors from the Conference, first-team doubles recognition to go along with a second-team singles honor. In the 2010-11 season, Luteran’s women’s team ended the season with its first ITA regional ranking in program history as they posted a 13-win season en route finishing third in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament, the program’s highest finish since the 1998-99 season. The success on the court garnered the women a single year-best five All-NCAC honors. In 2006-07, Luteran was named the NCAC men’s co-coach of the year after the Gators finished third in the NCAC Tournament, the squad’s highest finish since the 1994-95 season. It was the first time a tennis coach at Allegheny received the top leagues’ coaching award.

Previous Head Coach of West Virginia Wesleyan. Two-time WVIAC Coach of the Year 2007 NCAC Co-Coach of the Year Winner of three conference titles as a player at WVWC (2 doubles, 1 single)

Luteran wasted no time in making an impact at Allegheny. In his first season the head coach of the Gators in 2002, Luteran led the men’s team to 11 wins and an improbable upset of top-seed Denison University in the opening round of the NCAC Tournament—the first and only time in the conference’s history the fourth seed upset the top seeded team. Allegheny finished fourth in the league that season, followed by a fifth-place finish in 2005, a fourth-place finish in 2006, and a third-place finish in 2007. Luteran’s squads excel in the classroom as well as they do on the court. During his tenure at Allegheny, he has coached 30 individuals (14 men and 16 women) that have received ITA All-Academic recognition including six men and eight women that received the honor multiple times. Three different men made the prestigious academic team all four years on campus. Additionally, the women’s program was declared an All-Academic Team by the ITA in 2006 and 2010. Both the men’s and women’s teams were honored by the ITA for the 201112 season. A certified teaching professional for over 18 years, Luteran served as the head men’s tennis coach for four seasons at his alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC). In his first season with the Bobcats, he led the team to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) title for the first time in 19 years. Overall, he guided the squad to a record of 40-15, including two undefeated seasons and a top-40 ranking in NCAA Division II. Luteran was twice honored as the coach of the year in the WVIAC, and he led Wesleyan to the National Tournament for the first time in school history in his time at WVWC. He also coached the women’s tennis team at WVWC for one year, leading the Bobcats to an 11-5 mark and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Luteran trained as a player and as a coach under the guidance of Carlos Goffi, former coach of John and Patrick McEnroe and author of “Tournament Tough”.

Luteran graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 1998 with a degree in public relations, won three conference titles with the Bobcat tennis team, two in doubles and one as a singles player. He also served as the team captain his senior year. In addition to coaching, he has served on the national ranking and awards committees for the NCAA and ITA, also leading physical education and outdoor adventure classes. A proponent of community service, he has also helped the men’s and women’s squads rack up over 2,000 hours of community service over the past nine years. Luteran currently resides in Meadville with his wife Emily, who is also an assistant with the Gator tennis teams, and their two children, son Lucas and daughter Ava.

Coaching Staff/2011-12 Academic Recognition Assistant Coach Emily Luteran Emily Luteran is currently serving her 9th year as a volunteer assistant coach for the Allegheny tennis teams. She is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College where she was the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Singles Champion as a freshman. Luteran’s previous coaching experience includes six years as the Assistant Director of Jefferson Memorial Park Tennis Program in Charles Town, West Virginia. She also serves as the co-director of the Gator Tennis Camps at Allegheny. While at West Virginia Wesleyan, Luteran played on three NCAA qualifying teams and served as captain her junior and senior seasons. She competed at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Bobcats.

Assistant Coach Jake Allmaras Allmaras is in his first year as assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams. A 2011 graduate of Allegheny College, Allmaras was a two-time captain of the tennis squad while he played for the Blue and Gold. In his senior year, Allmaras recorded a 26-17 combined record, finishing 14-9 in doubles matches while playing to a 12-8 record in singles. In 2011, Allmaras was selected to All-NCAC second-team doubles with rising junior Patrick Cole. Allmaras graduated with a bachelor of arts in economics and also minored in Spanish. He earned recognition as an Alden Scholar when graduating from Allegheny College. He currently resides in Meadville, Pa.

Emily currently resides in Meadville with her husband, Jared, who is also the head coach of the Gator tennis teams.

gators tennis Awarded For Classroom Excellence The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Jul. 12 its Scholar Athlete and Team awards. The Gators were among a handful of schools across all NCAA divisions to earn academic distinction for both men’s and women’s teams in addition to four individuals. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of at least 3.20. Allegheny was one of only two programs from the highly competitive North Coast Athletic Conference to have its men’s team listed among the honorees, while national power Kenyon College joined the Blue and Gold as the only conference programs to be recognized for academic excellence for both the men and women. In addition to the team award, sophomore Alex Hurtuk and junior Pat Cole along with Janna Dickerson ‘12 earned individual accolades from college tennis’ governing body. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet incredibly stringent criteria, including a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale). Pictured Above: The 2012-13 Gators squad prepare to embark on a boat ride to celebrate the 2012 ITA Scholar Athlete and Team awards, continuing the proud Allegheny tradition of excelling in the classroom.

2012-13 Season Preview

A

nchored by a pair of athletes that made a splash for the Gators during the 2011-12 season, the 2012-13 Allegheny College men’s and women’s tennis squad seem poised to return to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).

Head coach Jared Luteran will lead the team for the 10th time towards the goal of an NCAC Championship and a run at nationals while playing some of Patrick Cole ‘14 the toughest competition in the nation.“Both (men’s and women’s) teams had a good year last year,” said Luteran, “but we are really excited about this upcoming year with our returners coming back with more experience under their belts and a great class of freshmen.” The men’s squad posted a 3-1 conference record en route to a 10-9 finish overall, while the women’s team finished strong, winning their final two matches of the season against Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg in the NCAC tournament. The women’s team finished 10-10 with a 1-2 conference record. The men’s squad will be led by junior Patrick Cole, who hopes to add to his already impressive resume that includes three All-NCAC honors along with an NCAC Newcomer of the Year award. Cole’s consistent and demonstrated accomplishments for the Gators have resulted in a very high level of expectation entering the 2012-13 campaign. The rising junior finished with a 17-4 singles record last year, closing out the season winning six of his final eight matches. In April, Cole shot up to No. 14 in the ITA regional rankings after defeating the No. 22 and No. 10 regionally ranked players in convincing fashion. Cole will be joined by a group of athletes that have emerged as play-makers for the squad. The returning doubles duo of Frank Mosconi and Charlie Murphy, both currently juniors, finished the season 8-6, second highest on the team between the top flight doubles pair of Cole and sophomore Kevin Kacer.

On the women’s side, junior Carolyn Shetter earned a pair of NCAC post-season honors, collecting a All-NCAC doubles first team honor with partner and departing senior Deborah Landau along with recognition on the All-NCAC singles second team. The squad welcomes back three returners, using a strong finish at the end of the season to build momentum into 2012-13. “The women’s team got much better as the season progressed last year as we kept playing very strong regionally and nationally ranked competition,” Coach Luteran said on the strong finish; “They finished with two impressive wins. Hopefully it gives our three returners a lot of motivation coming into this fall.” Shetter was regionally ranked early and often in 2011-12 with Landau, maintaining a No. 25 doubles ranking for much of the season and peaking at No. 21 after defeating the No. 24 and No. 22 ranked duos. “There is nothing stopping Carolyn but herself,” Luteran stated; “As long as she stays strong mentally and makes good decisions on the court she can compete with anyone on any day.” As Shetter leads the three returners, Coach Luteran welcomes in a new class of Gator women’s tennis players. “We have 12 freshmen coming out and most of them are very strong players. I am assuming they will jump in right away and have a big impact.” With a strong foundation and youthful core, the Allegheny men’s and women’s tennis squad face a stacked schedule in 2012-13. Opening the season at home for the Nancy J. Heath Tournament, the squads play multiple Division I and II institutions during the year, including matches with Millersville, Mercyhurst and Robert Morris before conference matches late in the season.

Carolyn Shetter ‘14

The Gators will experience a high amount of turnover this year, as the 2012-13 Gators will feature a high volume of fresh faces. “Honestly, we have so many new faces and great talent coming in that it is hard for me to even predict where everyone is going to fall into place,” Luteran stated on the incoming class of 2015.

Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports: 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

EVANSVILLE

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 1984-85. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA All-America or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
