Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

With about 40 programs of study and the capstone comprehensive Senior Project, the College’s rigorous education results in benefits that include acceptance rates to medical and law school that are twice the national average. And Allegheny’s geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who enjoy biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking.
In 2012, U.S. News and World Report Ranked Allegheny College as the #1 Best Up-and-Coming Liberal Arts College in America. Allegheny College is included among the 100 “best values” in liberal arts colleges in the nation, according to Kiplinger’s, a private financial advising company. Kiplinger’s is the latest national publication to include Allegheny among the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. Allegheny College is also featured in Princeton Review’s The Best Colleges, an annual guidebook profiling North America’s top institutions for undergraduate education; Washington Monthly’s “2012 College Rankings: What Can Colleges Do for the Country?,” which ranks Allegheny College No. 41 of the top 252 liberal arts colleges in the nation; and The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012, which profiles the country’s best and most interesting colleges and universities.
Allegheny is also one of 40 colleges included in Loren Pope’s Colleges, is ranked No. 20 by Newweek for academic rigor, and ranked No. 55 by the Sierra Club for Greenest Colleges in America. In addition to publishing its own rankings, Kiplinger gave readers the opportunity to vote on which private colleges represent the best value and Allegheny closed third across the nation in the readers’ poll. We’re proud of Allegheny’s tradition, beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies. And we know that our professors are leading scholars who pride themselves even more on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it’s our students who make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is.

FRANK B. FUHRER FIELD Frank B. Fuhrer Field is home to Allegheny track & field and the crown jewel of the Robertson Athletic Complex. The field is named in honor of Frank B. Fuhrer ‘48, a long-time College supporter and member of Allegheny’s inaugural Hall of Fame class. Renovated in 2006, the facility includes a Field Turf playing surface, a FairPlay scoreboard that utilizes the latest in LED lamp technology, stadium lighting, and an eight-lane, 400-meter, double-bend track with a national award-winning surface. Locker rooms are located inside the stadium, and a fully-equipped athletic training facility is stationed on site. The stadium, which includes seating for 3,700 spectators, has played host to numerous NCAA playoff games as well as last-chance and championship track & field events. Robertson Athletic Complex is a vast athletic facility named in memory of College benefactor and 1905 varsity football letterwinner Andrew Wells Robertson. The facility covers over 200 picturesque acres on a plateau one mile north of campus.

2012-13 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD
INDOOR TRAINING FACILITIES One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the track & field team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training and rehab opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all track-related activities.
CROSS COUNTRY FACILITIES Originally known as College Field, Robertson Athletic Complex encompasses 203 acres of outdoor field space to include 102 acres of woodlands, trails for outdoor recreation, and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. The course, which is marked for both 6k and 8k, has hosted numerous championship meets. Outside of the primary course area, a bevy of unpaved roads and trails, including those weaving around Woodcock Lake and Dam, provide outstanding training conditions for Allegheny’s perennially successful cross country program.

HEAD COACH BRENT WILKERSON Brent Wilkerson is in his third year as head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs at Allegheny College. Wilkerson’s appointment filled a void left by the departure of long-time head coach Bill Ross, and follows a successful one-year stint as an assistant coach for the Gators. In his first full season as commander of the Gators’ running corps, Wilkerson led the men’s distance relay team to the 2011 NCAA indoor national championship. The men’s and women’s teams combined to break nine school records and boasted 39 All-Conference performances. The men’s cross country unit climbed to its highest national ranking in school history (No. 2) before cruising to its seventh straight NCAC team title and seventh consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. Heading into the 2012-13 track & field season, Wilkerson is coming off another outstanding cross country campaign leading the Blue and Gold. Paced by Bobby Over, who finished as the individual runner-up at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships while also sweeping the NCAC and NCAA Mideast Region Athlete of the Year awards, the Gators qualified as a team for the national championships for the eighth straight year, finishing among the top 15 for the third time in four seasons. Wilkerson was named NCAC Coach of the Year for the second time in three years as Allegheny won its NCAC-record 11th conference crown.
THE WILKERSON FILE Birthdate: April 11, 1984 (Cincinnati, Ohio) Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio Education: Bachelor’s-Business Administration, Wilmington (Ohio), 2006; Master’s-Education, Marietta, 2010 Date announced as Allegheny Head Coach: March 8, 2011 Coaching Awards: 2012 NCAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, 2010 NCAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Athlete Award Totals, Men: All-American: 8, Conference Champions: 6, All-Conference: 38 Athlete Award Totals, Women: All-American: 1, Conference Champions: 12, All-Conference: 27 School Records Broken at Allegheny: 15 Noteworthy Individual Awards: 2005 OAC Runner of the Year
Since taking over the reins of the Allegheny track & field program prior to the 2010 cross country season, Wilkerson has lifted the men’s cross country program to its highest national ranking ever, delivered a national championship on the track, and coached nine All-Americans while twice being named NCAC Coach of the Year.
In 2011-12, Lauren Butler was named NCAC Field Athlete of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, while Taylor Throckmorton was named NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year during the indoor campaign. Along with standout steeplechaser Bobby Over, Butler qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships where both competitors secured AllAmerica honors. Wilkerson also ignited a strong effort for the men’s cross country program, which qualified for the NCAA Championships for the eighth straight year despite losing most of the previous season’s scoring. Under Wilkerson’s tutelage, Over was signaled as the NCAA Mideast Region Runner of the Year while earning AllAmerica plaudits at nationals. As an assistant in 2009-10, Wilkerson helped guide the men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship, while then-sophomore Lauren Butler copped All-American honors in the javelin. Under his direct supervision, the Gators’ track and field unit claimed six conference titles and secured 17 NCAC All-Conference accolades. Prior to Allegheny, Wilkerson spent three seasons as the assistant track & field coach at Marietta College, helping the Pioneers crown two conference champions and break 49 school records in 22 events.
12
A 2006 graduate of Wilmington College of Ohio, Wilkerson was a twotime track & field All-American and 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Runner of the Year. He was also a 15-time All-Conference performer and 13-time All-Ohioan for the Quakers. After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Wilmington, he went on to earn a Masters of Education from Marietta in 2009. Wilkerson also has a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification. Brent and his wife, Brenda, reside in Meadville, Pa.

ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF Markham Hyde Markham Hyde returns for his second season as an assistant coach with the Gators’ track & field program after leading the team’s throwing contingent to fantastic heights during the 2011-12 campaign. Allegheny’s throwers authored 51 personal records and nine All-Conference plaudits during Hyde’s first year with the Blue and Gold, while he helped guide Lauren Butler to her third All-American honor in the javelin and a sweep of the NCAC Field Athlete of the Year awards. A 2006 graduate of Utah Valley University, Hyde was a three-time team captain and instrumental in the school’s transition as a Junior College to classification as an NCAA Division I institution. During his tenure with the Wolverines, he set school records in the weight throw and the hammer. He also established a state record in the weight throw while attending Davis high school in Kaysville, Utah. After serving as a student assistant at Utah Valley a year following his graduation, Hyde officially began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, where he earned his Masters of Education. Joining the Storm coaching staff during the team’s first year of Division II competition, Hyde helped the program establish new school records in every throwing event. In 2007-08, Hyde produced eight scorers at the Utah State Track & Field Championships as a member of the coaching staff at Syracuse high school. Markham, wife Brittany, and daughter Lynlee, reside in Meadville, Pa.
Maura Burke Maura Burke is in her first season with the Gators as an assistant coach for the track & field and cross country programs. In her role with Allegheny, Burke leads the individual development for the team in the sprints and jumps, while coaching the multi-event athletes. Burke joins the Allegheny staff immediately after an outstanding career at Ramapo College where she achieved NCAA qualifying marks in the pentathlon, 100-meter hurdles, and as a member of the 4x400m relay. A three-time team captain, Burke was the 2011 ECAC champion in the heptathlon, while she led the 2012 squad to the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) indoor team title. Also earning NJAC honors as captain of Ramapo’s women’s volleyball team, Burke was honored with the Betty Logan Female Athlete of the Year Award in 2010. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in contemporary arts with a self-designed contract major in advertising, marketing, design, and communications.
Marty Goldberg ‘62 Marty Goldberg is in his 13th year as an assistant coach for the Gators’ track and field program. He is a USATF Master Official and is one of the most experienced and respected officials in the United States. He has worked the Olympic Games, Olympic Trials, National Junior Olympics, National High School Championships, National Masters Championships as well as international meets such as the IAAF Diamond Series meets and the World Masters Championships. 2012 CROSS COUNTRY RECAP In what amounted to a two-team duel, nationally-ranked No. 15 Allegheny edged Case Western Reserve at the season-opening 2012 Bill Sudeck Classic, 26-29. Led by senior Bobby Over, who broke the tape for the individual win, the Gators opened the season with a victory on Case’s home course for the third consecutive year. After hanging back for a majority of Saturday’s race, Over took control during the final stretch of the course and finished the 6,000-meter circuit in 19:43. The Gators then swept fourth through sixth in the individual results, paced by senior Kevin Edwards, who split 20:05. The Spartans, who were ranked No. 27 in the Division III pre-season national poll, put the first five runners across the line en route to a win on the women’ side. Kristina Martin and Kelly Gallagher finished sixth and seventh, respectively, to break up an outstanding performance from Case’s elite group. Martin crossed through the chute in 16:01, while Gallagher finished eight seconds back. The next week, Allegheny women’s cross country pieced together an outstanding team effort as the Gators finished seventh overall and fourth among Division III schools at the 23-team Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin College. The strong team result featured an exceptional delta as Allegheny’s top five runners were separated by 32 seconds. Sophomore Andy Sharfman had a break-out performance to lead the Allegheny attack. Finishing 34th overall out of 313 runners, Sharfman crossed the finish in 18:55, while Kelly Gallagher closed seven places back in 19:01. Bobby Over finished third overall to lead a terrific team performance by the men. Over split 24:43 in his first 8k of the season as the Gators finished third overall on the team board.
Bobby Over on the awards stand at nationals.
Although Allegheny placed zero emphasis on winning a team title, that’s exactly what the nationally-ranked men’s team did at the Dicksinson Long and Short Invitational. Bobby Over was incredibly workman-like has he blasted from the middle of the pack to win the individual crown. The Gators ran the first 4k of the 8,000 circuit as a work out. A large contingent of the team ran as a group for the first-half of the race, while the goal of the coaching staff was to motivate the back of Allegheny’s scoring pack. Over was in 25th at the midway point of the race before kicking it into high gear. He broke through the tape comfortably in 26:01. Logan Steiner was the top Division III rookie in the field, crossing through the chute in 11th-place with a time of 26:45, while senior Kevin Edward finished four seconds back (26:49) in 13th. Despite a three-week break from racing, the Allegheny women’s cross country team delivered a solid performance at the 2012 Dickinson Long and Short Invitational. Competing on the same course as this year’s NCAA regional race, the Gators finished seventh overall in the team standings. The first 3,000-meters of Saturday’s race was strategically run by Allegheny, which wanted to keep its top pack together in an effort to close the gap between its top six runners. Junior Kristina Martin led the way for the Blue and Gold after finishing 25th overall in a time of 24:35.4. Sophomore Andy Sharfman finished next for Allegheny in 25:05.0, finishing just ahead of rookie teammate Makenzie O’Connor (25:10.1). Allegheny women’s cross country took advantage of ideal conditions, great competition, and a supremely-fast course in delivering a strong team effort that yielded numerous personal bests at the Inter-Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin. The Gators finished 20th in the team standings while six nationally-ranked teams battled for the team crown. Junior Kristina Martin paced the Blue and Gold with her fastest collegiate race ever, while delivering one of the fastest 6k’s in the history of the Allegheny program. Finishing 36th out of 270 runners, Martin crossed the finish in 22:30.6. Bobby Over conceded the top overall spot in the men’s race, but Allegheny’s standout harrier still managed to make history as he obliterated the College’s 8k cross country record. Leading the Gators to a third-place finish, Over finished second in the individual standings after authoring a dazzling time of 23:48. Taking advantage of an ultra-fast course and a field loaded with fantastic competition, Over averaged 2:58 over each 1,000 meters. Breaking through the chute in 24:38, Logan Steiner was the top rookie in the race while orchestrating the fastest 8k by a freshman in Allegheny long and distinguished history on the hills. James Rynes, who continues to make stunning strides in his sophomore campaign, finished in 25:02, while Kevin Edwards closed in 25:08. Senior Brennan Hamilton capped the Gators’ scoring after completing the 8k circuit in a career-best 25:37. After having its run of seven consecutive conference titles snapped last season, Allegheny exacted revenge on nationally-ranked No. 25 and defending champion Wabash as the Gators’ cross country team delivered a strong statement at the 2012 NCAC Championships. Led by individual winner, Bobby Over, Allegheny placed three runners in the top five and its entire scoring contingent among the top 12 in winning its 11th league crown. Over became the ninth Allegheny harrier to win the NCAC Championship on the men’s side while he earned honors as NCAC Runner of the Year. Logan Steiner continued his fabulous rookie season as he finished third overall with a time of 26:26.2, earning First Team All-NCAC accolades as well as NCAC Newcomer of the Year laurels. Sophomore James Rynes finished fifth overall en route to First Team All-NCAC plaudits, while Kevin Edwards and Brennan Hamilton both copped Second Team All-Conference accolades. Sophomore Alex Simon earned All-NCAC Honorable Mention honors, while the victory marked Allegheny’s ninth NCAC team title since 2002 and the second in the tenure of head coach Brent Wilkerson, who was named NCAC Coach of the Year. The women replicated last year’s sixth-place finish at the NCAC Championships. Kristina Martin earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors after crossing the finish line in 24:12.5, earning postseason accolades from the NCAC for the third consecutive year. Junior Bobby Over became the first runner in the history of Allegheny cross country to repeat as the NCAA regional champion, as he led the Gators to a fifth-place finish out of 49 teams at the 2012 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships. Over left no doubt in defending his individual crown, pulling away from the region’s top competitors over the final 2k en route to a dominating win. Logan Steiner finished 17th overall and manufactured the best rookie performance on the day while earning NCAA All-Region honors. Senior Kevin Edwards also garnered All-Region accolades after closing in 28th. Kristina Martin earned All-Region honors for the third consecutive year to lead the women’s team to a 14th-place finish out of 49 teams in their final race of the campaign.
Kelly Gallagher
NCAA Mideast Region Runner of the Year Bobby Over capped the 2012 cross country season with the highest national finish ever by an Allegheny runner, and the Gators rode that scintillating performance to a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships. Over settled into second after the first half-mile of the 8,000-meter circuit and stayed in that position for the duration of the race. As eventual champion Tim Nelson of Wisconsin-Stoudt broke away at the 3k, Over was forced to finish the second-half of the race by himself as the space between the top four runners as well as the ensuing chase pack was surprisingly large. Although Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf made a push to overtake Over down the stretch, he was unable to make a pass as Over closed as the national runner-up behind the fastest time by an Allegheny harrier at the NCAA Championships. Over clocked 24:34.8, eight seconds off an individual national title, while rookie teammate Logan Steiner also delivered a superb effort to help position Allegheny inside the top 15 at nationals for the sixth time in seven years. Finishing 36th overall, Steiner was the top freshman finisher in the national field after traversing the course in 25:06.8, while his performance also marked the best NCAA rookie finish in team history.

NORTHCOAST.ORG
Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The conference has produced over 60 NCAA team championships since 1983. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

ALL-TIME WINNINGEST PROGRAM IN THE NCAC
29
NCAA ALL-AMERICANS With the dream of the first modern Olympic Games still a twinkle in the eye of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, track and field competition began at Allegheny College. The cross country and track and field programs have enjoyed tremendous individual and team success on the national level, highlighted by a pair of top-three national finishes for the men’s cross country program in 2006 and 2009. Jeremy Scott, who qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games and was a medalist at the World Championships, was a two-time national champion with the Gators.
