Rober tson Complex

Allegheny College Men’s Soccer Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-theart Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. The softball complex within Robertson Complex features 25-foot long dugouts, a 25-foot high backstop, a full-field underground watering system, a full-field tarpaulin, an 8x15-foot electronic scoreboard, a fully-enclosed press box, a sound system, spacious locker rooms and a fully-enclosed permanent fence. Robertson Field, located right next to the softball complex, is the home of Allegheny Baseball. The facility includes a batting cage, which sits along the right-field fence, allowing easy access for in-game use, and two spacious dugouts behind each baseline. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Allegheny College Men’s Soccer Angelo Panzetta enters his 12th season as head coach of the Allegheny men’s soccer program. A twotime North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Coach of the Year, Panzetta ranks second on the school’s all-time wins list, racking up a 108-77-23 overall record during his 11 seasons on the sidelines.

Head Coach Angelo Panzetta

Head Coach Angelo Panzetta

The second of his NCAC Coach of the Year honors came in 2004 after leading the Gators to their first NCAC Tournament crown, and receiving the automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Once in the tournament, the Gators won their first and second round games before falling to the eventual 2004 champion, Messiah College. Their win over Transylvania University in the opening round was the first NCAA postseason victory in Allegheny soccer history, and allowed the Gators to host their first ever postseason contest. The game was a thriller with the Gators winning in penalty kicks against in-state rival Carnegie Mellon University. This past season, Panzetta would lead Allegheny to its best record since the 2006 campaign, ending the year 11-7-1 earning a second consecutive trip to the NCAC tournament. The Gators would win their first five games of the season, including two early season tournament championships (Oberlin invitational, and the 27th annual Wilmington Kiwanis Classic).

Their impressive start would earn them national merit by being ranked in the top 25 for the first time since their 2004 sweet sixteen run. They would ride the momentum of their fast start all the way to their second consecutive NCAC tournament appearance, the first time they have made back-to-back tips to the post-season since the 2006-07 seasons. Along the way, Panzetta would reach a tremendous milestone. On September 6, Allegheny would defeat Grove City 5-2 to give Panzetta 100 career victories as head coach for the Gators. For Panzetta, the accomplishment of his 100th win was not only his own, “I want to thank all of my current and former players, assistant coaches, and managers, because I couldn’t have done it without all of them,” said Panzetta. “I know how hard it is to win in the NCAC, and i’m proud and honored to get to 100.”

Panzetta has guided the Gators to top-four NCAC finishes in nine of his 11 full seasons as head coach. In 2002, he picked up his first NCAC Coach of the Year honor as the Gators posted a 14-6-0 record, tying the school record for wins, and earning the a team a spot in the conference championship game. A year prior, his first season at Allegheny, the team posted a 12-4-1 overall record, and tied for third place in the NCAC. A native of Irondequoit, N.Y., Panzetta is a 1989 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he turned in a standout collegiate career, becoming the school’s first three-time NCAA Division III All-American First Team selection. While at RIT he led the Tigers to four NCAA playoff appearances, four Empire Athletic Association (EAA) titles, and a 55-7-7 record. Panzetta was also a two-time EAA Player of the Year, and was inducted into the RIT Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Following his career at RIT, Panzetta was selected in the first round of the 1989 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) draft by the Baltimore Blast. He helped Baltimore to a berth in the MISL championship series in 1990, and finished second in the Rookie of the Year balloting. After two seasons with the Blast, he went on to play three seasons for the National Professional Soccer League’s Harrisburg Heat where he helped the team to three playoff appearances. Panzetta is a member of the Harrisburg Heat Hall of Fame, and was recently named to the Heat’s All-Decade team for the 1990s. Before coming to Allegheny, Panzetta served as the top assistant to Dean Foti at Division I Syracuse University. During his seven years as an assistant with the Orangemen, Panzetta coached 18 All-Big East Conference selections, and helped the team advance to the Big East Tournament Semifinals in 1999, and a quarterfinals appearance in 2000. Panzetta earned a master’s degree in Exercise Science from Syracuse in May of 2000.

Panzetta’s other coaching experience includes one season at his alma mater RIT, and two seasons as an assistant coach at Gillman High School in Baltimore, Md. He has also coached the New York West Olympic Developmental Program’s (ODP) Under-17 team, and was an evaluator for the Region 1 ODP staff. He is licensed with the United States Soccer Federation, holding an A License. Panzetta and his wife Gina currently reside in Meadville with their daughter Marissa.

DAVID V. WISE CENTER One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

2012 Season Preview

Allegheny College Men’s Soccer The Gators enter the 2012 campaign with an experienced group of veterans hoping to replicate a hot start in 2011 that resulted in a 7-2 record. With 10 starters returning, the Gators look poised to return to the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) conference tournament for the third consecutive season.

that limited him to four games to provide a spark to the back line. Iacono started the 2011 campaign with 1 goal in four games played before going down with an injury. Junior Mark Burkhart and sophomores Janos Cseh and Corey Macmillan will also help provide depth for the Gators. Offensively, Allegheny returns the top five goal scorers from 2011 that collectively scored 23 of the squad’s 34 goals last season. Leading the pack is Andrew Miller, who scored four of his six goals against conference opponents, including the lone goal in the NCAC tournament semifinal. Senior Travis Tasker, a co-captain for the second consecutive year, is a major of the foundation that will provide leadership in the midfield. Filling out the midfield will be senior Conor Azevedo, who scored one goal, adding three assists in 2011.

Head coach Angelo Panzetta will man the sidelines for his 12th season with the Gators, welcoming new assistant coach Nathan Whitehurst. Panzetta has established a winning tradition for Allegheny since his arrival, finishing in the top four of the conference in nine of his 11 seasons. The 2011 Gators finished the season with an 11-7-1 record and qualified for the NCAC Tournament, falling in the semifinal, 4-1, to eventual national champion Ohio Wesleyan University. “Last year we finished in the top three in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Great Lakes Region in regards to strength of schedule,” said Panzetta on the 2011 campaign, “The NCAC had a very strong season as a group and as it turned out we played seven teams ranked in the final Great Lakes poll and four NCAA playoff teams last year.”

Jon Lichina (‘14)

The 2011 squad earned five All-NCAC honors, led by All-NCAC first team and All-NSCAA Great Lakes Region third team defenseman and rising senior Tim Egan. Other returning athletes named to All-NCAC teams include senior David DelGreco, second team selection, along with juniors Andrew Miller and John Lichina, who were named to the honorable mention. “The strength of our (2011) team was in the sophomore and junior classes, with only one senior in the starting lineup,” said Coach Panzetta on the returning Gators, “I am excited about our returning experience and depth.” With such a strong corps of returning players, Panzetta has the opportunity to play a variety of offenses, planning on rotating between a 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 based on the personnel on the field. With another exciting season of NCAC play on the docket, the Gators seem ready to make a big splash in the conference picture in 2012. Junior John Lichina has firmly established himself as one of the elite goalkeepers in the NCAC over the past two seasons. Named team co-captain, Lichina finished 2011 with a conference-leading 93 saves while recording a 1.48 goals against average, shutting out opponents on six occasions during the season. He played his best soccer of the season during a 2-0-1 stretch against Wooster, Kenyon and Hiram that vaulted the Gators into contention, allowing only three goals in 290 minutes of play. “John had an outstanding sophomore season, we were very pleased with his consistency and maturity,” Panzetta said while referring to his junior goalkeeper. “I know he will be taking a more assertive role at training and in games and I look for him and the senior defenders to be the driving force of this year’s team.” Competition for the backup spot is led by senior Andrew Shirley, who started all 17 games in 2009, recording a 2.10 goals against average. Senior Dan Marcus, junior Mike Severyn and freshman Jake Pugliese will compete with Shirley for the backup spot. The Gators will start 2012 with an experienced back line anchored by Egan. Fellow senior Joe Caruso will join Egan on the backline after starting in all 18 games in 2011. The strongest spot for the Gators looks to be the back line, as Andrew Zimmer, who tallied two goals in 15 games played, along with junior Alex Etherington Keith Danley, who both played in all 19 games of 2011 look to assist a line that allowed two or fewer goals in seven of nine home games last season. Senior Michael Iacono hopes to bounce back from an ACL injury

22

Juniors Daniel McCann and Vince Reginella, the latter of which is returning from an ACL injury, will help fill the position along with sophomore Erik Donatelli and freshmen Brenton Stoddart and Brendan Parsons.

The majority of the offensive creation in 2011 came from a group of three mid/ forward hybrids that combined for five goals and 11 assists on the season. Senior Tyler Danzey led the trio with three goals and four assists. Senior Chris Brennan also was a primary contributor, finishing the season with four goals and one assist. Sophomore Cameron Olson completed the trio, playing in 19 games, scoring one goal and adding four assists during the season. Sophomore Tom Richter along with freshmen Jake Lebsack and Alex Marks will also help provide depth to the outside midfield. Last season, the Gators exploded out of the gate, scoring 12 goals in their first five games before fizzling out down the stretch, managing seven goals during their final seven games, finishing with 1.75 goals per game. Spearheading the offense is senior David DelGreco, a transfer who exploded out of the gate last season, scoring five of his six goals in the first nine games. Completing the formidable 1-2 punch is junior Brian Graham, who played all 19 games and netted four goals apiece as an electric presence coming off the bench. “I look for DelGreco and (Andrew) Miller to continue right where they left off last season. They both had outstanding seasons and scored some big goals for us. As long as we continue to mature offensively, I know Dave and Drew will get their chances to score.” Panzetta said on the offensive outlook for the Gators. “For us to have a successful season, DelGreco and Miller both need to stay involved in out attacks not only scoring but setting up other players as well. I will also look to Graham, Azevedo, Danzey, and Brennan to have an impact, they have all played significant minutes in their Allegheny careers.” Fellow junior Paul Teufel and sophomore Daniel Szekely will also compete for playing time. Playing one of the toughest schedules in Division III has become commonplace for the Gators, who face annual competition with the nation’s elite. Including the defending national champions in Ohio Wesleyan, the Gators will face 10 opponents who finished the 2011 campaign with winning records, four of which made the NCAA tournament. The squad will open their season at home for the Allegheny Classic tournament before four straight road matches. The Gators seek an improvement on their home record from last season, playing Grove City, Geneva and Point Park before a trip to Carnegie Mellon. The NCAC campaign opens on Sept. 22, when the Gators host Wittenberg. Allegheny will face a test on Oct. 20, when Ohio Wesleyan visits Frank B. Furher field. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports ‹ 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 1984-85. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA All-America or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Nor th Coast Athletic Conference

NORTH COAST

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, Earlham College, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.
