Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pacesetter in the 21st century.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW The Gators enter the 2012 campaign with a target square on their backs after riding stifling defense to the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regularseason crown. Allegheny, which was stunned in last year’s NCAC tournament final despite turning in a typically dominating effort, has the motivation to dismiss the pressure from the chase pack as the team seeks a second bid in three years to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Bettering last year’s unit is far from a certainty. The Gators, which have been historically stingy against opposing offenses under the tutelage of head coach Mike Webber, finished the 2011 season ranked eighth in the nation in both shutout percentage (.737) and goals against average (.400). The Blue and Gold was rewarded at the end of the year with seven All-Conference selections (its most in a single season since 1988) as well as three All-Region picks. Unfortunately the stars from that cast have graduated, including NSCAA Second Team All-American Kira Kliment, All-Region midfielder Becca Crissman and goalkeeper Emily Karr, who finished her career with the fourth-highest shutout total in the history of Division III soccer after amassing 43 clean sheets. Despite some difficult losses in personnel, the Gators are once again in a position to reload. The team’s depth is probably its greatest strength. Last year’s squad rarely played at full strength, and key players missing from the lineup during stretches of the campaign will have a significant impact on Allegheny’s postseason aspirations this year.
Michelle Holcomb
DEFENSE The Gators’ success starts along the back line, where Allegheny has positioned itself as one of the top defensive outfits in the country almost annually. Paced by Kliment and rising sophomore Sam Hoderlein, Allegheny’s suffocating defense held the opposition to just 5.8 shots per game in 2011. The team allowed just two second-half goals, and didn’t yield a single finish in seven home matches (6-0-1). Hoderlein’s emergence on the back line comes one year after then-freshman Alison Buzzard also served in a starring role at center back. Senior Leanne Balster pieced together a solid preseason and could fill the massive void left my Kliment, while solidifying the middle defensive third for Allegheny. As Allegheny looks to keep the tradition of developing outstanding center backs, another possibility in this spot could include freshman Sarah Shindler, a left-footed natural defender with great technical skill. On the outside, senior Chyna Strickland and freshman Lauren Miller are poised to anchor the left side of the pitch, while rookie Olivia Cushman and first-year player Faith Robinson will likely lead the patrol at right back. MIDFIELD Allegheny’s personnel provide the coaching staff with the flexibility to explore multiple formations, although if the team elects to operate under a 4-3-3, the midfield features several exciting possibilities. Before having her season derailed by an unfortunate injury, then-freshman Jaymee Wallace shined as the Gators’ primary attacking central midfielder. Back and healthy for her sophomore campaign, Wallace will probably get the nod to anchor the midfield while being flanked by senior captain Ashley Lehr and Buzzard, who was hampered by injury last season after being named 2010 NCAC Rookie of the Year. Lehr, who is a two-time All-Conference selection, is primed for a break-out season after tying for the team lead in scoring last season.
Leanne Balster 10
Senior Dayna Rowe is strong on set pieces and emerged last season as one of Allegheny’s kick takers. Rowe is among a handful of players vying for time in the middle, including Tori Delzer, a second-year player who is comfortable both in the middle and on the outside; 2011 PIAA All-State selection Hannah Zangara; and fellowfreshman and former WPIAL standout Kate Touscany.
2012 SEASON PREVIEW FORWARD In recent years, Allegheny’s Achilles heel has been its inability to consistently produce in the offensive third. In the last six seasons, the Gators have averaged 1.32 goals per game despite averaging nearly 17 shots. This year’s group of forwards is stronger than at any point in recent history, and if the attack can match the level of success anticipated on the defensive end, Allegheny galvanizes its potential to be a major player on the national scene. Pacing the team at forward is senior Katrina Gazsi and junior Michelle Holcomb. Gazsi and Holcomb each produced a team-best four goals last season, while Holcomb’s shooting percentage was a staggering .600. Gazsi, who did all of her damage against the conference slate, emerged as a true threat up top en route to NCAC All-Conference Second Team plaudits. Emily Byers, who was a regular in the rotation last season, and sophomore Greta Hilbrands are both impact players. An exceptionally smart player with surprising quickness, Hilbrands missed the first half of last season, but scored in just her second career start while totaling two assists in Allegheny’s victory in the semifinals of the NCAC Championship Tournament.
Dayna Rowe
Freshman Niki Augustine bolsters the team’s quick-strike potential at forward, while additional depth is available on the wings through Emma Loniewski and second-year player Krysten Opsatnik.
GOALKEEPER Emily Karr was a four-year starter in net, and during her time with the Blue and Gold she pieced together a remarkably successful collegiate career. Finding a replacement for a player who accumulated a program-record 14 shutouts last season would be daunting for any team, but the Gators enter the campaign with three players all aiming to take over the club’s goalkeeping duties. Junior Kylie Mason boasts the most experience and is primed for the opening-day start, while sophomore Gabby Curtis and rookie Bryn Philibert will also contend for a leadership role in the back. Curtis still has four years of eligibility after being sidelined with injury in 2011. SCHEDULE In preparation for the hope of a deep postseason run, the Gators have lined up a demanding schedule that will certainly leave the Gators battle ready as they look to replicate last season’s run to the NCAC regular-season title. The Blue and Gold open the campaign with nine non-conference games against opponents with winning records in 2011 before commencing conference play in the highly competitive NCAC. Early-season tests include: Otterbein, which has earned six NCAA bids since 2003 including a run to the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2010; Houghton College, which moves to Division III and returns two of its top three scorers from a squad that finished 17-4-1 in 2011 while advancing to the NAIA Elite 8; and Capital, which clinched its fourth NCAA tournament appearance in 2011, while advancing to the second round to cap its seventh consecutive winning campaign. Six of the NCAC’s nine teams finished with a winning record last year, and similar results can be expected in a conference that boasts as much parity as any league in the country. The Gators last home game of the year will no doubt be the season’s most highly-anticipated match as they host reigning NCAC tournament champions, Ohio Wesleyan University on Oct. 20. OWU dealt Allegheny its lone conference loss in 2011 to claim a share of the regular-season crown, and then despite being dominated for large stretches of the match, upended the Gators, 1-0, in the conference’s postseason final.

ROBERTSON ATHLETIC COMPLEX The women’s soccer field at Allegheny College is located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex. The field, which opened in 1985, is 120’ x 75’. In 2009, the natural playing surface received a boost with a new drainage system, while the competitive area is book-ended by new international (or pro-style) aluminum goals. The pitch is almost exclusively used by the women’s soccer team, which has helped preserve the quality of the field. The Gators have lost just once on their home pitch in the last two years while compiling 12 consecutive winning seasons. In 2001 and 2010, Allegheny finished the regular season undefeated at home. Under the tutelege of current head coach Mike Webber, the Blue and Gold’s record stands at 25-11-7 (.700). Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. Robertson Athletic Complex also includes the 3,000-seat Frank B. Fuhrer Field; one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter, trails for outdoor recreation, numerous natural surface practice fields, and a kick wall.

Last season, the Gators closed with double-digit wins for the third consecutive year (11-5-3) while earning a share of the 2011 North Coast Ahletic Conference regular season crown. Paced by an outstanding defensive unit that yielded just eight goals all season, the Gators finished in the nation’s top 10 for goals against average and shutout percentage. Center back Kira Kliment served in the starring role and became the 11th player in team history - and first since 2003 - to earn All-America honors. Goalkeeper Emily Karr also flourished under Webber’s tutelage. Finishing the year with a singleseason program record 14 shutouts, Karr’s career total of 43 clean sheets marked the fourth-highest total in NCAA Division III history. In 2010, Allegheny made its third appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament after receiving a coveted at-large bid. The Gators kicked off the slate with a school-record 10 consecutive shutouts and tied a team record with their highest national ranking (No. 16) during the season. Early in the campaign, Allegheny captured the prestigious Mayor’s Cup Tournament Championship, which is the longest running college soccer tournament in the nation. The club finished the year 14-3-4 and boasted the best regular-season winning percentage in team history. On the heels of its banner season, Allegheny collected six All-Conference accolades and were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with a National Team Academic Award. That success continued the re-tooling of the previous campaign in which the Gators enjoyed their best season since winning the NCAC Championship in 2003. The Blue and Gold finished 11-6-2 overall and secured third place amid the tough conference slate for the second consecutive season. At the end of the season, seven Allegheny players were named to the All-Conference teams, while the team’s inspiring play set the stage for a bright future. Prior to coming to Allegheny, Webber was the head women’s coach at Worcester State from 2001-04, leading the Lancers to three conference tournament appearances. In 2004, he led Worcester to a school record tying 12 wins, including a victory over 12th-ranked Lynchburg College. That squad went on to capture the first MASCAC Tournament championship in school history and received an
automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Overall, Webber finished with a 33-31-5 record at Worcester, ranking him second alltime on the school’s win list. Along with his women’s coaching duties, Webber was an assistant for the Lancer men’s team, which won four conference titles during his time and made three appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament, advancing as far as the Sweet 16. He was in charge of the goalkeepers, who allowed just 79 goals in 92 matches (0.86 goals per game) and posted 34 shutouts in four years. In addition to his collegiate background, Webber coached Sutton High School to a 53-22- 8 record from 1997 to 2000, including a share of the 1997 state title. He also coached the Sutton Fuller Hamlets in the Premier Division of Region 1 from 1999 to 2004, leading the squad to four semifinal appearances in the State Cup. Webber was quite familiar with the Worcester area, as he played and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross. A 1988 graduate with a degree in political science, Webber was a four-year starter in goal for the Crusaders. A three-time team MVP, he ranks first at the school in career and season save percentage and in career saves. Webber also ranked second in both career goals against average and singleseason shutouts. Webber currently resides in Meadville with his wife Tammy and their three children, Mackenzie, Cade and Shae.

COACHING STAFF/FACILITIES ERICA LIPPITT Assistant Coach Erica Lippitt is in her first season as assistant coach with the Gators’ women’s soccer program. The Marietta, Ga., native brings six years of coaching experience to Allegheny, including a two-year stint at Georgia Southern following a three-year run with the First Coast Soccer Association from 2008-10. She also coached at Providence School of Jacksonville during the 2009-10 campaign. Lippitt played goalkeeper for two seasons at the University of North Florida, after transferring from Drexel University. Following her collegiate career, she played professionally for two seasons. In 2008, Lippitt played with the Bradenton Athletics of the W-League and spent 2009 with the Thomasville Dragons of the Women’s Premier Soccer League.
WOMEN’S SOCCER AUXILIARY FACILITIES One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the women’s soccer team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training and rehab opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all soccer-related activities.
Lippitt earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management from North Florida in 2009 and a master of science in kinesiology from Georgia Southern in 2012. She has a class C coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation, and a goalkeeping Level III diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
