THE NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

2012 All-NCAC First Team

Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

FACILITIES

Frank B. Fuhrer Field is home to Allegheny football and the crown jewel of Robertson Athletic Complex. The field is named in honor of Frank B. Fuhrer ’48, a long-time College supporter and member of Allegheny’s inaugural Hall of Fame class. Renovated in 2006, the facility includes a FieldTurf playing surface, a FairPlay scoreboard that utilizes the latest in LED lamp technology, stadium lighting, and an eight-lane, 400-meter double-bend Olympic track with a national award-winning surface. Locker rooms are located inside the stadium, and a fully equipped athletic training facility is stationed on site. The stadium, which includes seating for 3,700 spectators, has played host to numerous NCAA playoff games. Robertson Athletic Complex is a vast athletic facility named in memory of College benefactor and 1905 varsity football letterwinner Andrew Wells Robertson, who was also a member of Allegheny’s Board of Trustees from 1926 until 1961. The facility covers over 200 picturesque acres on a plateau one mile north of campus.

The David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the football team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to support additional cross-training and rehab opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all indoor training activities.
