Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

With about 40 programs of study and the capstone comprehensive Senior Project, the College’s rigorous education results in benefits that include acceptance rates to medical and law school that are twice the national average. And Allegheny’s geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who enjoy biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking.
In 2012, U.S. News and World Report Ranked Allegheny College as the #1 Best Up-and-Coming Liberal Arts College in America. Allegheny College is included among the 100 “best values” in liberal arts colleges in the nation, according to Kiplinger’s, a private financial advising company. Kiplinger’s is the latest national publication to include Allegheny among the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. Allegheny College is also featured in Princeton Review’s The Best Colleges, an annual guidebook profiling North America’s top institutions for undergraduate education; Washington Monthly’s “2012 College Rankings: What Can Colleges Do for the Country?,” which ranks Allegheny College No. 41 of the top 252 liberal arts colleges in the nation; and The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012, which profiles the country’s best and most interesting colleges and universities.
Allegheny is also one of 40 colleges included in Loren Pope’s Colleges, is ranked No. 20 by Newweek for academic rigor, and ranked No. 55 by the Sierra Club for Greenest Colleges in America. In addition to publishing its own rankings, Kiplinger gave readers the opportunity to vote on which private colleges represent the best value and Allegheny closed third across the nation in the readers’ poll. We’re proud of Allegheny’s tradition, beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies. And we know that our professors are leading scholars who pride themselves even more on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it’s our students who make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is.

EIGHT-TIME NCAC CHAMPIONS
Gia Celularo ‘88 was the first Allegheny softball player to continue her competitive career beyond graduation as she was signed by the legendary Stratford Brakettes of the Amatuer Softball Association (ASA). Celularo was a four-year starter for the Gators, earning three All-America honors and helping the team to a 133-24 record, including four top-five finishes in the NCAA Tournament. Most recently, Celularo has served as the director of planning/inventory at Kadant Web Systems in Auburn, Mass. In addition to its outstanding tradition on the field that has resulted in the Gators being the seventhwinningest program in NCAA postseason history, Allegheny’s alumni is highly successful and has penetrated all areas of science, medicine, and academia.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK great shape behind the dish with the addition of freshmen Katrina George and Mikayla Moretti. The rookie duo will likely platoon for most of the spring as both players swing a big stick and have outstanding arms. Who starts could be a simple decision of going with the hot hand, which will definitely be the case for the Gators’ crowded contingent of outfielders. The centerpiece of the outfield corps is senior captain and reigning NCAC Player of the Year, Stephanie Fort. A three-time All-Conference selection, Fort finished among the conference leaders in nearly every offensive category. Last year, she established an Allegheny program record against Washington & Jefferson with seven runs batted in, while she became just the second player in team history to smash at least two homeruns in multiple games.
Maureen Pallone Allegheny softball enters the spring campaign with high expectations after orchestrating a marvelous 2012 season in which it manufactured the largest single-season turnaround in NCAC history while sweeping the conference’s Player and Pitcher of the Year awards. The Gators finished 27-11 last season, and although there is a change in leadership for the surging program, the Blue and Gold boast nine returning starters and a solid crop of rookie talent that has already integrated itself into Allegheny’s aspirations of a second consecutive NCAC regular season title and the team’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007.
While Fort is expected to start in center, the corner outfield spots are less solidified. The leading contenders for those positions include NFCA First Team All-Region honoree Maureen Pallone and sophomore Sadie Stuart. Pallone served as the Gators’ best offensive player in the clutch last season, while she was particularly outstanding against the conference schedule. Stuart started every game last season at second base and closed the year among the NCAC leaders in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and RBI. Competing for time in the outfield is a solid group that includes three players with starting experience. Sophomores Leah Herlocker and Shannen Segiel earned starting roles in the outfield as rookies last year, and both belted gamewinning hits. In addition, Herlocker led Allegheny in strikeout ratio and tied for the team-high with a seven-game hitting streak. Senior Sophia Katz is a two-year starter in both the infield and outfield, and is a great defensive player. First-year Rachelle Bennett is versatile and can also squeeze into the lineup in a number of positions.
Last season, Allegheny’s success was largely contingent on its ability to dominate in the circle. Led by Caitlin Nealer, who emerged as one of the top rookies in Division III, the Gators led the league in earned run average (1.52) while holding the opposition to a .224 batting average. Piecing together the best rookie season by any pitcher in Allegheny’s storied history, Nealer finished seventh in the nation with a 0.99 ERA. She also finished among the national leaders in victories (23) and strikeouts (192) en route to NFCA First Team All-Region honors as well as NCAC Pitcher of the Year accolades.
The road to the conference crown and a spot in the NCAA tournament field will be tumultuous as the Gators prepare for one of the most demanding schedules in recent history. The team is tabbed to open the season in Virginia Beach on March 1 against two nationally-ranked top 15 opponents in Rowan and Christopher Newport. The following weekend is highlighted by a single tilt against Salisbury, which won 37 games last season while being one of four Gator opponents to advance to an NCAA regional championship.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Beth Curtiss, Nealer has expanded her pitching palette, and her continued emergence will be essential as the Gators look to add to their legacy as the seventh-winningest program in NCAA playoff history. Junior southpaw Natalie Persicano, along with rookies Meggie White and Hannah Olenik add much-needed depth to the Allegheny rotation. Persicano, who flashed signs of tremendous potential last spring, continues to improve, and following a strong fall, should play a much larger role this year.
Allegheny’s annual trip to Florida is bookended by clashes with Amherst, another nationally-ranked powerhouse that won the NESCAC regular-season title en route to NCAA regional championship hosting honors. Nationallyranked Wisconsin Eau-Claire and NCAA tournament qualifier Benedictine add to the Gators’ daunting slate down South. Both clubs won over 30 games last season and are expected to once again compete for their respective conference titles.
Curtiss, who guided Gannon to three NCAA Division II tournament appearances, has specialized in developing national-caliber defenses and it’s an area the Gators expect to be strong in 2013. The infield corners will likely reprise their role from last season, with First Team All-NCAC pick Halea Hayden shouldering the load at first and Nicole Rodi anchoring the hot corner for the second straight spring. Hayden, who has a .412 career batting average, finished 2012 among the national leaders in on-base percentage (.500). Rodi’s offense dipped slightly from her 2011 All-Conference season, but she has outstanding defensive prowess and good pop in her bat.
The NCAC slate opens with Allegheny seeking to avenge last year’s postseason loss to NCAC tournament champion Denison (3/30), while a second road trip to nationally-ranked DePauw (4/20) toward the end of the regular season mark the two biggest dates on the calendar.
In the middle, sophomore Marina Scarantino will slide to second base while freshman Belle Mazurik takes over the duties at shortstop. Scarantino led the NCAC in stolen bases (26), walks (25) and defensive assists (111) last season and finished the year among the national leaders in all three categories. Adding the talented local-product Mazurik into the mix gives the Gators one of the quickest middle infields in the region. In addition to Mazurik, first-year college players Allie Landowski and Hailey Marthaler provide depth for the squad’s interior defense. Allegheny’s lone departure from 2012 was the graduation of three-year starting catcher Felicia Gowanlock. Despite the loss, the Gators look to be in

ROBERTSON ATHLETIC COMPLEX Robertson Field is located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex. The field, which opened in 1992, has played host to the 1994, 1995 and 1996 NCAA Division III Regional Softball Championships, as well as the 2004 and 2008 NCAC Softball Tournaments. The newly-installed permanent outfield fence sits at 200 feet to left and right field and 210 feet to center field. The facility includes a batting cage, which sits behind the field. The softball complex also features 25-foot long dugouts, a 25-foot high backstop, a full-field underground watering system, a full-field tarpaulin, an 8x15-foot electronic scoreboard, a fully-enclosed press box, a sound system, spacious locker rooms and a fully-enclosed permanent fence. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. Led by tri-captains Beth Giese, Arlie Sears, and Linda Weber, Allegheny recorded a victory in the program’s first-ever home game early in the 1977 season with a 31-8 win against Robert Morris University. Robertson Athletic Complex also includes the 3,000-seat Frank B. Fuhrer Field; one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

COACHING STAFF/INDOOR FACILITIES SUZIE DENILLO Suzie DeNillo is in her first season as assistant coach for the Allegheny softball program. DeNillo’s appointment with the Gators marks her first postgraduate coaching stint at the collegiate level. DeNillo does bring a wealth of experience into her role with the Blue and Gold, most recently as a head and assistant coach for the Metro Express, a Junior Olympic development team based out of Pittsburgh. She also spent the 2012 season as the head junior varsity coach at Penn Trafford High School. Beginning her tenure with the Metro Express in 2008, DeNillo also served as the assistant youth director for the National Softball Association of Western PA/WV starting in 2007.
SOFTBALL AUXILIARY FACILITIES One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.
DeNillo was part of the Clarion softball coaching staff for two years, while she was earning her Master of Science in Sports Management Studies and Intercollegiate Athletic Administration from California (Pa.). DeNillo also earned her undergraduate at Clarion in 2011, where she was a three-year letterwinner and two-time team captain for the Golden Eagles.
LAUREN RADWAN Lauren Radwan begins her first season as a member of the Gator softball staff. Radwan makes the trek to Allegheny following a three-year stint as the pitching coach for the McDowell Trojans (Erie, Pa.). Radwan attended and played softball at Gannon University from 2005-09. Radwan was a four-year starting pitcher and led the Lady Knights to three consecutive NCAA Division II Regional Appearances and a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship. During her collegiate career, Radwan broke many of the Gannon single season and career pitching records. She still ranks second all time at Gannon in victories (65) and second all time in strikeouts (566). Radwan holds the Lady Knights’ single-season records for wins (21), games played (36), games started (31), and innings pitched (197.1). Radwan was a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection and a four-time GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Gannon in 2008. Radwan is a native of Sylvania, Ohio where she attended and played softball at Sylvania Southview High School. She and her husband, Greg, currently reside in Erie. Radwan is employed as a special education teacher in the Harbor Creek School District.

ALL-AMERICA/HALL OF FAME SHELLEY BROWN
RONNIE BOHM
JULIE DENNIS
Graduated: 1989; Inducted: 1999 Shelley Brown was a two-sport standout in softball and basketball for the Gators. She was a three-time All-America at pitcher for Allegheny, and during her four years the Gators never finished below fifth in the NCAA, including a second-place finish in 1988. Brown was Allegheny’s all-time leader with an .810 career winning percentage and a career ERA of 0.75. Her 16 shutouts in 1986 are an Allegheny season best. Brown also held the record for sacrifices in a season (28) and career (55). Additionally, she owned the second most wins in a season (24) and career (77) in school history. During her four years, the Gators had an amazing record of 130-31. Brown also was a second team All-NCAC honoree in basketball in 1988 and ’89. She helped lead the Gators to four straight NCAC Championships, and she was a member of the 1985-86 squad that set the school record with 26 wins. Brown was the 1988-89 Female Athlete of the Year.
Graduated: 1991; Inducted: 2005 Veronica (Ronnie) Bohm was a dual-sport star in her days at Allegheny. On the basketball court, she helped the Gators to a pair of NCAC titles, as she earned two First-Team All-NCAC honors. With 1,126 career points, she is sixth all-time in scoring at the school. In softball, she was a member of three regional championship squads, including the 1988 team that was the national runner-up, and went on to earn AllAmerican honors in 1991 for her play at second base.
Graduated: 1985; Inducted: 1995 Julie Dennis earned softball All-America honors in both 1984 and 1985. Her skills in both pitching and hitting helped the Gators to NCAA playoff berths in 1983 and 1985. Dennis posted a remarkable career pitching record of 63-16 with a 0.70 ERA and 306 strikeouts and a career batting average of .352. Her ERA of 0.39 during the 1984 season still ranks as the most impressive pitching campaign in Allegheny lore, while her career ERA stands as the fourth-best in NCAA Division III history.
TARA DICKERT
LAURIE MACHUGA
Graduated: 1996; Inducted: 2008
Graduated: 1996; Inducted: 2006 Laurie Machuga finished her career as one of the most distinguished pitchers in Division III softball history. She estasblished the NCAA Division III record for career strikeout ratio (10.7), a total that at the time tied for second in the NCAA All-Division record books. She is also the NCAA Division III career record holder for consecutive scoreless innings with 75. Laurie became the first Division III softball player with over 1,000 career strikeouts. She had 46 career shutouts, second best in Division III and was a three-time Division III strikeout champion (1993, 1994 and 1996) and led the nation three times in strikeout ratio (1993, 1995, 1996). A three-time NCAA First Team All-American (1993, 1994, 1995), Machuga also earned Second Team All-America honors in 1996.
From 1992-95, the Gators posted 122 wins with two trips to the NCAA Division III College World Series, and a key catalyst of those squads was third-baseman Tara Dickert. Allegheny placed sixth in the nation in 1993 before bettering their finish with a fourth place showing in 1995. Sandwiched in the middle of those two years was an NCAA Regional appearance and a season where Dickert set Gator single-season records with 25 doubles and 110 total bases. In 1995, she went on to set three more Allegheny records with 49 games played, 168 at-bats, and 72 base-hits. During the ‘94 campaign, she finished second all-time with 67 hits, a .489 batting average, and a .803 slugging percentage, while ranking second with 109 total bases in ‘95. For her career, she also holds the all-time Gator records for at-bats, hits, doubles, and total bases while ranking second in batting average. Her name also appears in the career top 10 for seven other Allegheny records. Dickert’s name even graces the NCAA Division III record book, with her 25 doubles in ‘94 tying for fourth all-time in a single year.
JEN LORENZEN Graduated: 2000; Inducted: 2011 Jen Lorenzen is a fixture in the Gators’ record book. Ranking first on the school’s all-time charts for homeruns (27), slugging percentage (.725) and GIA CELULARO bases on balls (76), she also currently ranks second in total bases (321), hits (187) and doubles (41). Graduated: 1988; Inducted: 2007 In addition to her oustanding offensive production, Celularo was a four-year starter on the Allegheny Jen guided Allegheny to back-to-back NCAC regular softball team, earning three All-America honors and season championships in 1998 and 1999. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of 10 academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster. The NCAC has produced 65 NCAA Team Championships across all sports since its inception in 1983. NCAC softball has enjoyed a reputation as one of the strongest leagues at the NCAA Division III level. No school in the conference has been able to rival Allegheny’s illustrious history which includes 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, 10 trips to the NCAA World Series, 45 NCAA playoff wins, 22 All-Americans, and a national runner-up finish (1988). The Gators rank as the seventh winningest program in the history of Division III. Denison also boasts a strong history with four NCAA appearances and a spot in the 2008 NCAA Regional Championship. Wittenberg has earned two NCAA bids in the last 10 seasons while DePauw earned a fifth-place finish at the 2010 and 2011 NCAA World Series. The Tigers made five consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament field before 2012 and led the nation in victories in 2008. Since the NCAC began sponsoring softball as a championship sport in 1998, four different teams have claimed regular-season conference championships. Denison leads the way in that grouping with eight titles (2001-03, 2006-07, 2009-11), while Allegheny has captured five (1998, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2012), Ohio Wesleyan three (2004-05. 2010) and Wittenberg one (2000). The NCAC instituted the conference tournament in 2001 to determine the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red have earned six tournament titles (2001-02, 2006, 2008-09, 2012), followed by Allegheny with three (2004-05, 2007). Hiram was won the league’s postseason championship twice (2009, 2011), while Wittenberg secured the title in 2003.
