2013 Fan Guide Credits The 2013 Allegheny College women’s soccer fan guide is a publication of the Allegheny athletic communications office. Action photography, head shots, and team pictures supplied by Ed Mailliard. Historical photos provided by Ed Mailliard and Bill Owen where known.

Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

TEAM HISTORY

2012 ALL-NCAC TEAMS

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presiSo dents, who have taken an active role in the governance of So the conference.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

2013 GATORS

Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

The women’s soccer field at Allegheny College is located within the 203acre Robertson Athletic Complex. The field, which opened in 1985, is 120’ x 75’. In 2009, the natural playing surface received a boost with a new drainage system, while the competitive area is book-ended by new international (or pro-style) aluminum goals. The pitch is almost exclusively used by the women’s soccer team, which has helped preserve the quality of the field. The facility has given the Gators a distinct home field advantage. In 2001 and 2010, Allegheny finished the regular season undefeated at home. Under the tutelege of current head coach Mike Webber, the Blue and Gold’s home record stands at 28-14-7 (.667). Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. Robertson Athletic Complex also includes the 3,000-seat Frank B. Fuhrer Field; one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter, trails for outdoor recreation, numerous natural surface practice fields, and a kick wall.

One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the women’s soccer team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines.

received an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Overall, Webber finished with a 33-31-5 record at Worcester, ranking him second all-time on the school’s win list.

Last season, the Gators topped the .500 mark for the fifth straight season, and seventh time in Webber’s eight years at the helm of the program. Five players earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors, as senior midfielder Ashley Lehr was a First Team selection, sophomore defender Sam Hoderlein and sophomore forward Emma Loniewski each Second Team honorees, and junior midfielder Michelle Holcomb and senior defender Chyna Strickland earning Honorable Mention laurels.

Along with his women’s coaching duties, Webber was an assistant for the Lancer men’s team, which won four conference titles during his time and made three appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament, advancing as far as the Sweet 16. He was in charge of the goalkeepers, who allowed just 79 goals in 92 matches (0.86 goals per game) and posted 34 shutouts in four years.

In 2011, the Gators closed with double-digit wins for the third consecutive year (11-5-3) while earning a share of the 2011 North Coast Ahletic Conference regular season crown. Paced by an outstanding defensive unit that yielded just eight goals all season, the Gators finished in the nation’s top 10 for goals against average and shutout percentage. Center back Kira Kliment served in the starring role and became the 11th player in team history - and first since 2003 - to earn All-America honors. Goalkeeper Emily Karr also flourished under Webber’s tutelage. Finishing the year with a single-season program record 14 shutouts, Karr’s career total of 43 clean sheets marked the fourth-highest total in NCAA Division III history. In 2010, Allegheny made its third appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament after receiving a coveted at-large bid. The Gators kicked off the slate with a school-record 10 consecutive shutouts and tied a team record with their highest national ranking (No. 16) during the season. Early in the campaign, Allegheny captured the prestigious Mayor’s Cup Tournament Championship, which is the longest running college soccer tournament in the nation. The club finished the year 14-3-4 and boasted the best regularseason winning percentage in team history. On the heels of its banner season, Allegheny collected six All-Conference accolades and were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with a National Team Academic Award.

That success continued the re-tooling of the previous campaign in which the Gators enjoyed their best season since winning the NCAC Championship in 2003. The Blue and Gold finished 11-6-2 overall and secured third place amid the tough conference slate for the second consecutive season. At the end of the season, seven Allegheny players were named to the All-Conference teams, while the team’s inspiring play set the stage for a bright future. Prior to coming to Allegheny, Webber was the head women’s coach at Worcester State from 2001-04, leading the Lancers to three conference tournament appearances. In 2004, he led Worcester to a school record tying 12 wins, including a victory over 12th-ranked Lynchburg College. That squad went on to capture the first MASCAC Tournament championship in school history and

In addition to his collegiate background, Webber coached Sutton High School to a 53-22- 8 record from 1997 to 2000, including a share of the 1997 state title. He also coached the Sutton Fuller Hamlets in the Premier Division of Region 1 from 1999 to 2004, leading the squad to four semifinal appearances in the State Cup. Webber was quite familiar with the Worcester area, as he played and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross. A 1988 graduate with a degree in political science, Webber was a four-year starter in goal for the Crusaders. A three-time team MVP, he ranks first at the school in career and season save percentage and in career saves.
