Head Coach Bridget Sheehan Entering her 28th season on the sidelines for the Gators, It did not take long for Sheehan to catapult her program to regional and national prominence. In just her second year at the helm, she led the 1987 squad to a 42-5 record, which included a school-record 37 straight wins, en route to the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The following year was even better as she set a program record for wins with a record of 44-9. In that year the Gators captured the first of four straight North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships. A two-time NCAC Coach of the Year (1987, 1990), Sheehan’s Gators have qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament four times (1987, 1988, 1990, 1991), and compiled a remarkable 591-434 record, an average of nearly 23 wins per season. Allegheny has also been ranked among the nation’s top 20 four times and won four conference championships (1988-91).

Recent history has seen Sheehan’s squads produce achievements never before accomplished at the school. Her 2003 team put together an attack percentage of .317, ranking fifth in the nation at seasons’ end, shattering the old school mark. That squad went on to set four team records that still stand, and setter Vicki Kajder became the third player under Sheehan to be tabbed as an All-American. In addition to national recognition, 72 all-conference certificates have been handed out to Gators, including three-time NCAC Player of the Year Molly Dietz (1989-91), and 1987 NCAC Co-Player of the Year Carol Frederick. In 2004, Traci Stoner set a pair of firsts for the program becoming the first All-Great Lakes Region Newcomer of the Year. In total Sheehan has mentored eight all-region honorees, and four of those honorees received all-region recognition multiple years. Aside from coaching, Sheehan has been an active member in the volleyball community, serving as a member of several committees including the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III National Ranking Committee, the NCAA Division III All-America Committee, and the NCAA Regional Selection Committee. Sheehan is currently servicing on the AVCA Division III Head Coaches Committee. Prior to coming to Allegheny Sheehan was a coach in the high school ranks, serving as an assistant volleyball coach at Maplewood High School from 197982 before she moved on to Cochranton High School where she served as a junior high school basketball coach from 1980-84, and the head volleyball and basketball coach from 1984-86. Sheehan, who graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1977 with a degree in Economics, was a four-year starter in volleyball, and served as the team captain in her senior campaign. She also received a master’s degree in Sports Administration from her alma mater in 1990. In 2008, Sheehan was inducted into the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Coaching Staff • Robertson Complex Assistant Coach Quinn Wright Wright enters his second season as assistant coach for the Gators’ volleyball program, although he has long been associated with the Blue and Gold. A member of the Allegheny Class of 2012, Wright has been a student assistant with the Gators for the past three years, most recently serving as the volleyball program’s setter coach. Wright, who has been around the game for many years, has played the role of setter on the Allegheny men’s club team since his freshman season. Wright was the starting setter for Penfield (N.Y.) High School where he helped guide the Patriots to consecutive Section 5 championships in 2006 and 2007. A history major with a religious studies minor, Wright has also played club volleyball for the Rochester, N.Y.-based Pace Bootleggers.
ROBERTSON COMPLEX Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes spereate baseball and softball complex’s; one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.
Wright has worked as a coach and technician at numerous youth volleyball clinics and camps, and he has strong aspirations to continue his involvement in playing and coaching.
Student Manager Brandon Seitz Seitz enters his first season as student manager for he Gators. Currently a junior at Allegheny College, the biochemistry major is responsible for keeping statistics during Allegheny contests while also coordinating the Gators’ video efforts.

David V. Wise Center • Why Gators? David V. Wise Center
A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among colleges Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened for the 1997 volleyball season. The multi-million dollar building is the hub of all indoor athletic activities on campus. The 1,200-seat performance arena (right) is home to the basketball and volleyball teams. The Neo-Shok floor is also used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat. The team locker rooms are located at court level and measure approximately 17-x-30 feet. Spectators enter the arena at street level onto a spacious concourse. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remarkable ampitheater effect. The bleachers, which include three rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full-length courts. The first Allegheny volleyball contest ever held at the Wise Center took place on September 1, 1998. The Gators earned a come from behind 3-2 (12-15, 15-2, 11-15, 15-12, 15-9) victory over visiting Clarion. Bobbi Ruddock paced the Blue and Gold with 34 assists and 14 digs. Wendy Turkovich totaled a team-best 23 digs that match. The weight room houses contemporary fitness equipment, which includes the newest Galileo resistance machines and free weights, stairclimbers, stationary bicycles and other similar fitness machines. The sports forum encompasses most of the upper level of the Wise Center. It is primarily used for open recreation, intramurals and physical education classes. Its 27,000 feet of floor space is roughly three-quarters the size of a football field. A 210-meter, three-lane jogging track is suspended 14 feet above the perimeter of the sports forum. Also included in the Wise Center but not pictured: the Mellon Pool, three racquetball courts, an aerobics/dance room, the state-of-the-art athletic training room and all athletic department offices.
Why Gators?
Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, Earlham College, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.
A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports; 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. EVANSVILLE

NORTHCOAST.ORG
The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 1984-85. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA All-America or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

The Allegheny Tradition
“The long hours dedicated to practice, tournaments, games, and conditioning all while balancing schoolwork, is challenging. You learn that things will not always go your way and you (and your team as a whole) won’t always win. Life is nothing without challenges and at Allegheny you will undoubtedly learn that both on and off the court. However, with a team supporting you every sweaty step of the way, there comes a trust that you can and will overcome any obstacle you face. I love Allegheny volleyball because it challenges you to test yourself against the most rigorous of obstacles. While doing this, you not only succeed with your teammates, but you develop better character while becoming a stronger person.” ~Catherine Kasianowicz - Allegheny ‘15 “As a cosmetic dentist, every minute of my busy day is scheduled with something important: an implant, extraction, checking my patients, etc. My experience as a student-athlete at Allegheny helped me learn to manage my time well. During volleyball season there wasn’t extra time to waste between classes, labs, practices and games. My grades were always the best during this time of year due to my busy schedule and necessary discipline. I’m grateful for this experience and it has helped me tremendously as a professional.” - Kristen Donohue (Cunningham), Allegheny College ‘96
“What comes to mind most is that when I played at Allegheny I gained a family by being a part of the volleyball team. We were there to support and challenge each other, bonding through competition that we each sought when we became a part of the Gator athletic family. Most importantly, it let me leave Allegheny while keeping the family that keeps growing with every new class of Gators that comes along.” - Jenna Hackett, Allegheny College ‘08
“The Allegheny Volleyball Program was a defining part of my college experience but also helped instill in me the value of balance in life. As a student/athlete at Allegheny, I could focus on my education and be part of a highly competitive and successful sports team at the same time. Pride in team accomplishments, a love of the sport, a strong work ethic and lifelong friendships are all part of what Allegheny volleyball has meant to me.” - Molly Pickett (Dietz), Allegheny College ‘92, Allegheny Hall of Fame
“My experience in the volleyball program taught me a lot of great life lessons that I continue to use and teach to my children. I learned that through hard work, determination and teamwork you can find success. Winning four NCAC championships didn’t come easy. Each year there were different obstacles to overcome, but we succeeded because we never gave up. We worked hard and believed in each other.” - Renea Gaus (Surrena), Allegheny College ‘92, Allegheny Hall of Fame
