Athletic Facilities
The David V. Wise Center (right) features four indoor courts with a mediumpace polyurethane rubber floor. The Wise Center provides a state-of-the-art indoor facility right on campus, as well as a rain site for matches. Other amenities include a 210-meter indoor track; a 6,000 square foot weight room; state-of-the-art nautilus equipment; racquetball courts; an aerobics/ dance studio; a pool and diving well; a performance arena used by the basketball and volleyball teams; and an athletic training room. The Robertson Tennis Complex (below) features 12 lighted courts divided into four banks of three courts, a state-of-the-art sound system and a U.S. Open DecoTurf surface. The new blue and green surface was installed during the summer of 2009. Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities, and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Head Coach Jared Luteran
7
Head Coach Jared Luteran Certified as a teaching professional by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) for over 20 years, Allegheny head coach Jared Luteran enters his 12th season at the College and continues his streak of establishing the Gators as an annual contender in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Luteran was named the 2014 NCAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year after leading the Gators to a 15-7 record. Under his tutelage, Patrick Cole ’15 became the program’s most successful player upon graduating, leaving Meadville with career singles (83), doubles (78) and combined (161) victories along with single season singles (26), doubles (25) and combined (51) marks. In addition, Cole earned a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, additionally earning a No. 10 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Central Region rankings, a program best. On the women’s side, the Gators opened the 2013-14 campaign with their first Nancy J. Heath Invitational title since 2007, upending Baldwin Wallace and Division II opponent Edinboro en route to the team title. The Allegheny women’s tennis squad ended the season 12-8. In total, Luteran coached five student-athletes to seven total AllNCAC honors.

The 2012-13 campaign saw the Allegheny men erupt for a 10-0 mark in dual matches to start the season, setting a new program record and finishing the season ranked No. 18 in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Allegheny women finished fifth in the conference after upending Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster in the 2012-13 NCAC tournament. In total, six Allegheny student-athletes would earn All-NCAC plaudits as three men and three women made the list, including a third All-NCAC First Team selection for rising senior Patrick Cole, who ended the season ranked No. 22 in the region. During the 2011-12 season, Luteran’s squads saw success both on and off the court. Cole followed up his 2010-11 NCAC Newcomer of the Year award his freshman year with a second All-NCAC first team selection, one of three tennis athletes between the men’s and women’s teams named to All-NCAC squads. In 2010-11, Luteran’s women’s team ended the season with its first ITA regional ranking in program history as they posted a 13-win season en route finishing third in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament, the program’s highest finish since the 1998-99 season. Luteran earned the United State Tennis Association (USTA) Allegheny Mountain District College Coach of the Year Award after the successful 2011 campaign. In 2006-07, Luteran was named the NCAC men’s co-coach of the year after the Gators finished third in the NCAC Tournament, the squad’s highest finish since the 1994-95 campaign. It was the first time a tennis coach at Allegheny received the league’s top coaching award. Luteran wasted no time in making an impact at Allegheny. In his first season as the head coach of the Gators in 2002, Luteran led the men’s team to 11 wins and an improbable upset of top-seed Denison University in the opening round of the NCAC Tournament—the first and only time in the conference’s history the fourth seed upset the top seeded team. Allegheny finished fourth in the league that season, followed by a fifth-place finish in 2005, a fourth-place finish in 2006, and a third-place finish in 2007.
Luteran’s squads excel in the classroom as well as they do on the court. During his tenure at Allegheny, he has coached 47 individuals (23 men and 24 women) that have received ITA All-Academic recognition including seven men and eight women that received the honor multiple times. Three different men made the prestigious academic team all four years on campus. Additionally, the women’s program was declared an All-Academic Team by the ITA in 2006 and 2010. Both the men’s and women’s teams were honored by the ITA for the 2011-12 year, with the men tacking on an additional honor during the 2012-13 campaign. A proponent of community service, Luteran has also helped the men’s and women’s squads rack up over 3,000 hours of community service over the past 11 years. Luteran additionally earned the 2010 ITA/USTA Campus and Community Outreach Award for the Middle States Section for community service aimed to benefit the Meadville area. Prior to arriving in Meadville, Luteran served as the head men’s tennis coach for four seasons at his alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC). In his first season with the Bobcats, he led the team to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) title for the first time in 19 years. Overall, he guided the squad to a record of 40-15, including two undefeated seasons and a top-40 ranking in NCAA Division II. Luteran was twice honored as the coach of the year in the WVIAC, and he led Wesleyan to the National Tournament for the first time in school history in his time at WVWC. He also coached the women’s tennis team at WVWC for one year, leading the Bobcats to an 11-5 mark and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Luteran trained as a player and as a coach under the guidance of Carlos Goffi, former coach of John and Patrick McEnroe and author of “Tournament Tough”. Luteran graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 1998 with a degree in public relations and won three conference titles with the Bobcat tennis team, two in doubles and one as a singles player. He also served as captain his senior year. In addition to coaching, he has served on the national ranking and awards committees for the NCAA and ITA, also leading physical education and outdoor adventure classes. Luteran currently resides in Meadville with his wife Emily and their two children, son Lucas and daughter Ava.

Assistant Coach Evan Schreiner Schreiner is in his second season at Allegheny after two seasons as a volunteer assistant for the Clemson University men’s tennis program. Schreiner also served four years as a camp counselor for several camps, including the Clemson Tiger Tennis Camp, Clemson High Performance Tennis Camp, Total Tennis Training Camp and Manny Diaz’s Georgia Tennis Camp, where he was able to learn from legendary coaches Chuck Kriese and Manny Diaz. Schreiner graduated in 2011 from Coker College, an NCAA Division II institution in Hartsville, S.C. A four-year starter for the Cobras, Schreiner earned a spot in top-flight doubles, also playing No. 2 singles during his collegiate career. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in business management from Coker in 2011, Schreiner recently completed his Masters of Science in parks, recreation and tourism management from Clemson University and is certified by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR).
WHY GATORS?
Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.
DAVID V. WISE CENTER One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

Cole Closes Record-Setting Allegheny Career Senior Patrick Cole was named to the 2014 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/Capital One Academic All-District IV Men’s At-Large squad, announced by the organization on Thursday, May 15. Consisting of student-athletes spanning all over Pennsylvania and several sports, including hockey, lacrosse, rowing, bowling, swimming & diving, wrestling, golf, fencing and rifle, Cole was one of six North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) designees from four NCAC member institutions and the lone Allegheny representative on the billing. A Livonia, Michigan native, Cole graduated last weekend as the most decorated student-athlete in the history of the Allegheny tennis program, leaving Meadville with program records for single season singles (26; 2013-14), doubles (25; 2013-14) and combined (51; 2013-14) victories, along with career marks for singles (83), doubles (78) and combined (161) wins. The 2013-14 selection for Allegheny’s NCAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award, Cole is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team selection and the 2012-13 recipient of the ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Central Region Award.
Patrick Cole
Allegheny Honored with ITA All-Academic Honors The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has announced that both the Allegheny men’s and women’s tennis teams have been named All-Academic Teams, while nine different Gator players were named ITA Scholar Athletes. Individually, the Gator women Scholar Athlete recipients include Andrea Brush, Abby Lange, Haley Meekhof, Laura Steele, and Michaela Thompson. For the men, Patrick Cole, Alexander Hurtuk, Frank Mosconi, and Tyler Triolo were honored. Cole, the winningest player in program history, is now a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete, while this marks the second consecutive season in which Mosconi, Hurtuk, Brush, and Steele received the honor.
Andrea Brush
As a team, head coach Jared Luteran’s Gators are one of just two North Coast Athletic Conference programs to see both the men and women earn the All-Academic designation, which is awarded to teams that achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above during the season of play. In order to earn Scholar Athlete status, an athlete must be a varsity letterwinner, earn a grade point average of 3.50 or higher during the academic year, and be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
Men’s Tennis Earns ITA Team Sportsmanship Award The Allegheny men’s tennis program was named the March 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Team Sportsmanship Award recipient, announced on Mar. 12 by the ITA office. A monthly award given to one men and one women’s team across all three NCAA divisions, the winners are selected by the ITA Ethics and Infractions Committee from nominations received from all ITA member institutions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges). This monthly award began in 2004. The honor, according to the ITA website,” is awarded upon a team that has exemplified outstanding sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct in the true spirit of competition and collegiate tennis.”
Gators Place Six on All-NCAC Listing Four members of the Allegheny men’s tennis program and two members of the Gator’s women’s squad were named to the 2014 All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Team, announced by the conference office on May 1. Senior Patrick Cole earned first team singles honors, adding a first team doubles notation with sophomore partner Tyler Triolo, who added an honorable mention singles award. Sophomore Thomas Manning was named to the All-NCAC Honorable Mention listing as head coach Jared Luteran was named the NCAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year in a vote conducted by the NCAC coaching contingent.
Sun Mo Koo
Two members of the Allegheny women’s tennis team were named to the 2014 All-North Coast Athletic Conference team as announced by the conference office on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Sun Mo Koo earned her first All-NCAC distinction, leading the Gators with a spot on the second team singles list, while sophomore Andrea Brush, who also appeared on the All-NCAC team for the first time, earned honorable mention singles plaudits.
Women’s Tennis Wins first Nancy J. Heath Tournament Since 2007 Senior Laura Steele, sophomore Sun Mo Koo and freshman Haley Meekhof posted identical 4-0 records in combined singles and doubles events to help lead the Allegheny women’s tennis program to its first Nancy J. Heath Tournament title since 2007. The Gators defeated Baldwin Wallace, 9-0, in the first round before upending Division II opponent Edinboro, 6-3, for the championship. “I was very proud of our women today,” commented head coach Jared Luteran. “We have some injured players out of the line up and today just shows how much depth we have on our team. It is always nice to beat a solid team like Baldwin Wallace and a good division II school like Edinboro.”

Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports: 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academicstandards.
The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 1984-85. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA AllAmerica or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
