Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

With about 40 programs of study and the capstone comprehensive Senior Project, the College’s rigorous education results in benefits that include acceptance rates to medical and law school that are twice the national average. And Allegheny’s geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who enjoy biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking.

In 2012, U.S. News and World Report Ranked Allegheny College as the #1 Best Up-and-Coming Liberal Arts College in America. Allegheny College is included among the 100 “best values” in liberal arts colleges in the nation, according to Kiplinger’s, a private financial advising company. Kiplinger’s is the latest national publication to include Allegheny among the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. Allegheny College is also featured in Princeton Review’s The Best Colleges, an annual guidebook profiling North America’s top institutions for undergraduate education; Washington Monthly’s “2012 College Rankings: What Can Colleges Do for the Country?,” which ranks Allegheny College No. 41 of the top 252 liberal arts colleges in the nation; and The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012, which profiles the country’s best and most interesting colleges and universities.

Allegheny is also one of 40 colleges included in Loren Pope’s Colleges, is ranked No. 20 by Newweek for academic rigor, and ranked No. 55 by the Sierra Club for Greenest Colleges in America. In addition to publishing its own rankings, Kiplinger gave readers the opportunity to vote on which private colleges represent the best value andAllegheny closed third across the nation in the readers’poll. We’re proud of Allegheny’s tradition, beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies. And we know that our professors are leading scholars who pride themselves even more on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it’s our students who make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is.

Facilities

FRANK B. FUHRER FIELD Frank B. Fuhrer Field is home to Allegheny track & field and the crown jewel of the Robertson Athletic Complex. The field is named in honor of Frank B. Fuhrer ‘48, a long-time College supporter and member of Allegheny’s inaugural Hall of Fame class. Renovated in 2006, the facility includes a Field Turf playing surface, a FairPlay scoreboard that utilizes the latest in LED lamp technology, stadium lighting, and an eight-lane, 400-meter, double-bend track with a national awardwinning surface. Locker rooms are located inside the stadium, and a fully-equipped athletic training facility is stationed on site. The stadium, which includes seating for 3,700 spectators, has played host to numerous NCAA playoff games as well as last-chance and championship track & field events. Robertson Athletic Complex is a vast athletic facility named in memory of College benefactor and 1905 varsity football letterwinner Andrew Wells Robertson. The facility covers over 200 picturesque acres on a plateau one mile north of campus.

2013-14 ALLEGHENY TRACK & FIELD

Facilities INDOOR TRAINING FACILITIES One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the track & field team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training and rehab opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all track-related activities.

CROSS COUNTRY FACILITIES Originally known as College Field, Robertson Athletic Complex encompasses 203 acres of outdoor field space to include 102 acres of woodlands, trails for outdoor recreation, and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. The course, which is marked for both 6k and 8k, has hosted numerous championship meets. Outside of the primary course area, a bevy of unpaved roads and trails, including those weaving around Woodcock Lake and Dam, provide outstanding training conditions for Allegheny’s perennially successful cross country program.

Head Coach Brent Wilkerson Now in his fourth year as head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs at Allegheny College, Brent Wilkerson has ensured that the programs’ tradition of excellence has continued. Since being named head coach, the Gator cross country and track and field athletes have combined for 11 All-America honors, 18 individual North Coast Athletic Conference championships, and 65 All-NCAC accolades, while the 2012 men’s cross country team earned the 11th NCAC title in program history. In the 2013 cross country campaign, the Gator men finished second at the NCAC championship, before going on to take fourth at the Mideast Regional Championships, earning their ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Championship, where they finished 18th. Current senior Bobby Over became the first runner in program history to earn three All-America honors, taking ninth at the NCAA championship, after winning his third consecutive regional crown, and second NCAC individual title. Over was one of four Gator men to earn All-NCAC honors, while he and sophomore Logan Steiner also earned All-Region accolades. On the women’s side, the Gator harriers placed four in the top-25 at the conference championship race, with senior Kristina Martin, sophomore Alyssa Brindle, and junior Andy Sharfman each earning All-NCAC accolades.

THE WILKERSON FILE Birthdate: April 11, 1984 (Cincinnati, Ohio) Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio Education: Bachelor’s-Business Administration, Wilmington (Ohio), 2006; Master’s-Education, Marietta, 2010 Date announced as Allegheny Head Coach: March 8, 2011 Coaching Awards: 2012 NCAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, 2010 NCAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Athlete Award Totals, Men: All-American: 10, Conference Champions: 6, All-Conference: 38 Athlete Award Totals, Women: All-American: 1, Conference Champions: 12, All-Conference: 27 School Records Broken at Allegheny: 15 Noteworthy Individual Awards: 2005 OAC Runner of the Year

Since taking over the reins of the Allegheny track & field program prior to the 2010 cross country season, Wilkerson has lifted the men’s cross country program to its highest national ranking ever, delivered a national championship on the track, and coached 10 All-Americans while twice being named NCAC Coach of the Year.

The 2012-13 Gator track and field team combined to produce 15 All-NCAC performances (7 indoor/8 outdoor), while Over was crowned the NCAC Indoor Distance Runner of the Year, after setting a new conference mark in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:32.4, while then-freshman Ben Plohr won the outdoor championship in the 800 meters. In 2011-12, Lauren Butler was named NCAC Field Athlete of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, while Taylor Throckmorton was named NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year during the indoor campaign. Along with Over (steeplechase), Butler qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships where both competitors secured All-America honors. Wilkerson also ignited a strong effort for the men’s cross country program, which qualified for the NCAA Championships for the eighth straight year despite losing most of the previous season’s scoring. Under Wilkerson’s tutelage, Over was signaled as the NCAA Mideast Region Runner of the Year while earning All-America plaudits at nationals. In his first full season as commander of the Gators’ running corps, Wilkerson led the men’s distance relay team to the 2011 NCAA indoor national championship. The men’s and women’s teams combined to break nine school records and boasted 39 All-Conference performances. The men’s cross country unit climbed to its highest national ranking in school history (No. 2) before cruising to its seventh straight NCAC team title and seventh consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. As an assistant in 2009-10, Wilkerson helped guide the men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship, while then-sophomore Lauren Butler copped All-American honors in the javelin. Under his direct supervision, the Gators’ track and field unit claimed six conference titles and secured 17 NCAC All-Conference accolades. Prior to Allegheny, Wilkerson spent three seasons as the assistant track & field coach at Marietta College, helping the Pioneers crown two conference champions and break 49 school records in 22 events.

Runner of the Year. He was also a 15-time All-Conference performer and 13-time All-Ohioan for the Quakers. After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Wilmington, he went on to earn a Masters of Education from Marietta this past March. Wilkerson also has a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification.

A 2006 graduate of Wilmington College of Ohio, Wilkerson was a twotime track & field All-American and 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Brent and his wife, Brenda, reside in Meadville, Pa.

Coaching Staff Taylor Throckmorton ‘12 A 2012 Allegheny graduate, Taylor Throckmorton enjoyed a stellar four-year career on the Gator track and field squad. Primarily a jumper and sprinter, he was part of Allegheny’s most recent national championship winner, the Gators’ Distance Medley Relay team that captured gold at the 2011 NCAA National Championships. A year later, Throckmorton was named the 2012 men’s Hurdler/Sprinter of the Year at the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. He currently holds the Allegheny school record in the 400-meters, while he also ranks in the school’s all-time top-10 in the long jump, 200-meters, and 500-meters. “I am excited to welcome Taylor back to Allegheny and back to our team,” head coach Brent Wilkerson said. “His outstanding work ethic and drive to become the best athlete he could made it an easy decision for me to want him on my staff. Taylor has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and class, and I know our student-athletes are thrilled to work with him again.” A native of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and graduate of Chagrin Falls, Throckmorton earned a degree in religious studies at Allegheny, while minoring in psychology. In the steamy conditions, the Allegheny men cruised to victory, behind sophomore Logan Steiner, who earned his first collegiate win with a time of 19:44.6 in the 6K race. He led a contingent of seven Gators to finish in the top-20, as Jack Denison took second overall (19:51.8), James Rynes eighth (20:26.5), Tom DeAscentis 12th (20:33.8), Alex Simon 16th (20:39.6), Paul Cancilla 18th (20:43.9), and, in his collegiate debut, Dan Cheung 20th (20:53.3). Facing off against three teams who were ranked in the top eight in the preseason regional rankings, the Gator women were led by senior Kristina Martin, who began her final season by taking third in the 4K race with a time of 15:44.2. She was one of three Gators to finish in the top 12, as Alyssa Brindle took seventh (16:03.2), and freshman S.J. Guillaume took 12th in her debut, timed in 16:17.5. Two weeks later, the Gators hosted the Allegheny Invitational, a preview for the upcoming NCAC championships and the first home race at the Robertson Athletic Complex in several years. The hosts didn’t disappoint, as the Gator men produced four of the race’s top five finishers, six of the top nine, and eight of the first 15 en-route to finishing with just 19 points. In his first action of the season, reigning NCAA runner-up Bobby Over cruised to a first-place finish with a time of 25:48.6, 15 seconds ahead of Steiner, who took second. In keeping with their theme established a week earlier at Case Western of finishing as a pack, less than five seconds separated fourth-place finishers James Rynes (26:28.9) and fifth-place Jack Denison (26:33.0), while only 72 seconds separated Over from the Gators’ seventh runner, Tom DeAscentis. In between, Cheung continued to impress early in his career, finishing seventh overall with a time of 26:53.1, while veteran Alex Simon in at 27:06.1, good for ninth. In the women’s race, Allegheny produced three of the top six finishers, Martin taking Kristina Martin clocked third (23:03.9), Brindle fifth (23:21.2), and Guillaume sixth (23:36.8). A total of five Gators turned in top-20 finishes, as junior Andy Sharfman crossed the line in 24:51.0, good for 18th, one spot, and three seconds, in front of sophomore Alexis Preston (24:54.6). Sophomore Makenzie O’Connor took 22nd, timed in 25:11.5, while junior Emma Loniewski, in her first season on the cross country team, completed Allegheny’s top seven, turning in a time of 25:25.7 to finish 26th in the 63-runner event. On Oct. 5, the Gators traveled to Bethlehem, Pa. to take part in the Paul Short Classic, hosted by Lehigh. The story of the day was the unseasonably warm conditions, as temperatures peaked in the upper-80’s with high humidity. The Allegheny men were placed in the elite “Gold” Division, against Division I powers including Harvard, Georgetown, Penn State, Yale, and Wake Forest, as well as a dozen Division III teams ranked in the top 20. In the less than favorable conditions, the Gators took 33rd in the 47-team field, led again by Over, who turned in a time of 24:59. Steiner finished 30 seconds later, with Denison, Rynes, and Cheung rounding out the team’s top-five. On the women’s side, Allegheny took 16th in a field of 45 Division II and III squads, led again by Martin, who traversed the 6K course in a career-best 22:23 to take 22nd. Martin was one of three Gators to finish among the top 100 in the field of 365. Sophomore Alyssa Brindlecontinued her strong start to the season, taking 50th with a time of 23:02, while freshman S.J. Guillaumealso continued to impress, finshing 73rd with a time of 23:22. Junior Andy Sharfman (24:16) and sophomore Alexis Preston (24:54) rounded out the Gators’ top five, with sophomore Preston (24:54), O’Connor (25:05), and Loniewski (25:11) finishing close behind. Allegheny then traveled to conference foe Oberlin to take part in the Inter-Regional Rumble, and both teams turned in impressive performances. Over won his second individual title of the season, covering the 8K course in 25:01.3, winning by over 200 meters. Steiner finished fourth overall, timed in 25:28.8, while Rynes recorded a personal-best 25:47.3 to finish 19th. Jack Denison (26:18.3) and Alex Simon (26:34.7) rounded out the top five, as Allegheny finished with a team score of 119. The Gator women turned in a score of personal bests, led again by the senior stalwart Martin, who finished ninth overall with a time of 22:09.4, besting her previous career mark by over 13 seconds. Brindle took ninth, with a personal record 22:28.7, while Guillaume (23:08.1), Sharfman (23:23.2), Preston (24:19.0) and Loniewski (24:28.4) also set career marks. As a team, the Gator women took 10th in a 35-team field, with nine of the squads ranked in the USTFCCCA Top 35. On Nov. 2, Allegheny played host to the NCAC Championships for the first time in 10 years. On a cold, rainy morning at the Robertson Athletic Complex, the Gators were unable to defend their 2012 NCAC title, as they were edged by Wabash by a score of 30-46. Individually, Over claimed his second consecutive NCAC title, leading tape-to-tape to win in a time of 26:35 to become the Gators’ first two-time conference champ since Kevin Pool in 2003 and 04. As a team, the Gators placed four runners in the top 12, but could not top Wabash, which claimed five of the top nine finishers. Over was one of three Gators named first team All-NCAC, with Steiner finishing third (27:04) and Rynes fifth (27:12). Simon earned second team all-conference plaudits by finishing 12th in 27:36. The Allegheny women saw three runners earn All-Conference laurels, with Martin leading the way with a ninth-place time of 23:38 in the 6K race to received second team laurels. Brindle was another second team honoree, finishing 12th in 23:53, while Sharfman earned her first postseason honor by finishing 21st in 24:34 to earn honorable mention status. As a team, the Gator women took fifth with 107 points, while Oberlin won its fifth straight conference title with a team score of 45. Allegheny returned to Bethlehem, Pa. and Lehigh for the 2013 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, and the Gators bounced back from the second-place NCAC finish to claim a fourth-place finish. Over continued his record-setting senior campaign, winning his third straight regional title in a time of 24:29, edging second-place finisher Chris Stadler by less than a second. The senior standout was one of two Gators to earn All-Region laurels, as Steiner earned the honor for the second straight season by taking 12th in a time of 25:05. In an extremely tight field in arguably the strongest region in the country, the third through 18th finishers were separated by just 29 seconds, while the top 30 runners all finished within one minute of one another. Following Steiner, Simon took 37th, timed in 25:48, while Rynes took 46th (25:56), and Denison 49th (26:00). Paced by a pair of underclassmen, the Gators women finished 12th in a field of 52 teams, paced by Brindle, who covered the 6K course in 22:55 to finish 53rd in a field of 360. Guillaume wrapped up an impressive freshman campaign, narrowly missing her personal best with a time of 23:10, while Sharman finished in 23:26 and Loniewski 23:39. Following its strong showing at the regional championship, the Gator men earned their ninth straight bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship. Over became the most decorated runner in program history, closing out his career by taking ninth in an incredibly strong field of 275 runners with a time of 25:01 in the 8K race held in Hanover, Ind. The senior became the first runner in Allegheny history to earn three All-American honors, finishing in the top 20 of the nation in each of the past three years, after taking 17th in 2011 and second in 2012. Entering the event ranked 24th nationally, the Gators finished 18th, marking their second straight top-20 finish, and seventh of the past eight seasons. The team’s second through fifth finishers were separated by less than 65 seconds. Steiner was the Gators’ second finisher, timed in 25:49, followed by Rynes (26:12) and Simon (26:36). Competing in his third national race, Denison finished in a time of 26:53, while fellow senior DeAscentis wrapped up his cross country career with a time of 27:39.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The conference has produced over 60 NCAA team championships since 1983. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

All-Americans

NCAA ALL-AMERICANS With the dream of the first modern Olympic Games still a twinkle in the eye of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, track and field competition began at Allegheny College. The cross country and track and field programs have enjoyed tremendous individual and team success on the national level, highlighted by a pair of top-three national finishes for the men’s cross country program in 2006 and 2009. Jeremy Scott, who qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games and was a medalist at the World Championships, was a two-time national champion with the Gators.
