10 Allegheny Facilities Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus.

One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

The Hughes File Coaching Experience

On Aug. 16, 2013, Allegheny Director of Athletics and Recreation Portia Hoeg ushered in a new era of Gator lacrosse with the hiring of Ashley Hughes, a 2008 graduate of Allegheny College, who returns to Meadville for her first season as head women’s lacrosse coach. Hughes, a four-year member of the women’s lacrosse and soccer program during her time in the Blue and Gold, arrives at her alma mater after a three-year stint as head coach at Saint Michael’s College, an NCAA Division II institution located in Colchester, Vermont. A member of the Northeast-10 conference, Hughes led the 2013 Purple Knights to the program’s highest win total since 2008, ushering the squad to its highest conference win total in three seasons. In 2012, the Purple Knights finished eighth in the nation with 170 caused turnovers, a single-season program record.

“I am extremely pleased to have Ashley return to Allegheny and take the reins of our women’s lacrosse program,” commented Hoeg. “As an alumna, her experience as a standout two sport student-athlete will bring wonderful leadership to our program. Ashley has experience in the holistic development of student-athletes, which is in alignment with our Combinations 2020 strategic plan and departmental philosophy. Ashley inherits a young and talented group of athletes and I am confident she will lead the team to success on and off the playing field.” Prior to taking the helm at Saint Michael’s College, Hughes served as an assistant for Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont for the 2010 season. Hughes began her coaching career during the 2009 season as an assistant coach at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. In addition to her experience on the sidelines, Hughes has also been instrumental in the implementation of several successful camps and clubs. While serving as the U-17 and U-20 Vermont Far Post Soccer Club coach from 2010 to 2013, Hughes also served as the director of the Saint Michael’s College Total Knights Sports Camp in 2013 in addition to directing the Saint Michael’s College Lacrosse Camp from 2011 to 2013. “Thank you to Portia Hoeg and the rest of the hiring committee for the opportunity to return back to Meadville as an Allegheny Gator,” commented Hughes. “The Gator squad has done very well in the last couple of seasons and I am ecstatic to continue to further progress the Allegheny lacrosse program,” she continued. “With such a strong returning group and a large incoming class, the program has great opportunities in the very near future and I could not be more thrilled to be leading the charge. I cannot wait to get to work with the student-athletes and continue to build the future of Allegheny lacrosse.” While playing for the Blue and Gold, Hughes cemented herself as one of the top scorers in program history, leaving Allegheny as the career leader in goals (125), assists (54) and points (179), effectively ushering in an era of prominent scorers for the women’s lacrosse program. Hughes currently ranks second on the all-time career assist list and is third in goals and points. During her time for the Gators, Hughes was named to a pair of Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association (IWLCA) All-Region teams, earning second team selections in 2005 and 2006. In addition, Hughes earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference First Team plaudits in 2005, 2006 and 2007, adding a second team notation in her senior year. Hughes was also named to two post-season NCAC All-Tournament teams. Most recently, Hughes was named to the NCAC 30th Anniversary All-Decade Women’s Lacrosse team, one of three Gators to receive the honor. A two-sport athlete, Hughes was also a four-year member of the Allegheny women’s soccer program, finishing her career with 20 goals and three assists for the Gators and earning an All-NCAC honorable mention selection as a junior.

12 Coaching Staff • Why Gators? Assistant Coach Heather Coppola Allegheny women’s lacrosse head coach Ashley Hughes ‘08 and Director of Athletics Portia Hoeg have announced the hiring of Heather Coppola to the position of assistant lacrosse coach. Coppola arrives in Meadville from Beloit College, a member of the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC), where she served as assistant coach. During her time with the Buccaneers, Coppola was responsible for the program’s recruiting efforts, the management and planning of the team’s annual budgets along with the practice and game plans. “We could not be more excited to have Heather join the Allegheny Lacrosse staff.,” commented Hughes. “Her success as an attacker will provide us with even more knowledge to our already threatening offense. In addition, her previous work as a student assistant and high school/ club coach will be pivotal throughout the recruiting process as we continue to build the program into a consistent championship contender. She is greatly welcomed to the Gator Lacrosse Family.” While in Wisconsin, Coppola also served as the head coach of the Madtown Lacrosse Club, administrating practice while also working one-on-one with the program’s goalkeepers. An Oswego, N.Y. native, Coppola started 68 games for the Alvernia University Crusaders in Reading, Pa., also serving as a student assistant in the athletic department. Coppola finished her collegiate career with 125 points on 103 goals and 22 assists, currently ranking in the top 10 for all three categories, helping lead the Crusaders to the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Mid-Atlantic Championship. During Alvernia’s ECAC Championship weekend, Coppola racked up 10 goals, earning her 100th goal in the process. After graduating from Alvernia, Coppola served as the assistant varsity lacrosse coach in the Wilson School District (West Lawn, Pa.), assisting with the development of team strategy and the coordination of team duties.

Why Gators?

Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

26 2014 Season Preview last season. Coach Hughes looks to bolster the defensive depth with a slew of incoming freshmen, as sophomore transfer Katie Denning along with freshmen Eleni Brown, Colleen Bodnar, Ashley Potofsky and Jessie Thiessen, who earlier this year won NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors in women’s soccer, will suit up for the Allegheny backline this season. Completing the Gator defensive contingent will be sophomores Christina Perez and Chloe Kedziora along with freshman Kaelin Clogan, who will battle for the starting goalkeeper spot.

T

he 2014 Allegheny women’s lacrosse team looks to usher in a new era of success for the Blue and Gold, welcoming a former player to the sidelines while bolstering a recordsetting offensive attack and a widely experienced defensive line as the Gators look to continue their determined march to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Leading the Gators into the 2014 season will be new head coach Ashley Hughes, a 2008 Allegheny graduate who played four seasons for the Blue and Gold. Returning to Meadville after coaching three seasons for Saint Michael’s College, a Division II member of the Northeast-10 Conference in Vermont, Hughes inherits an Allegheny squad that led the North Coast Athletic Conference with 16.47 goals per game last season. “Gator lacrosse holds a special place in my heart and I have always wanted the opportunity to return to a program that provided me with such a positive experience.” commented Hughes. Being able to return to a program and a conference that are continuing to be competitive in the NCAA is an opportunity that I could not pass up.” “Additionally, the NCAC continues to be a conference that upholds the academic and athletic priorities that are in line with my coaching philosophies. I feel fortunate to be able to compete year in and year out within a competitive conference while coaching studentathletes that have a strong academic focus and move on as alumnae to excel as citizens. I hope to be able to give back to such a program that provided me with the best collegiate experience.” The Allegheny offense again looks to make a national splash, as the nation’s seventh ranked offense in 2013 returns every member of last season’s record-setting front line. Sophomore McKenzie Bell will look to repeat a recordsetting freshman campaign, as Bell set a new program assist record with 58 helpers while finishing second in the nation with 7.31 points per game. Senior Kelly Dickson returns after a 46-goal season while sophomores Anna Doten and Jacqueline Morrow will suit up for the Blue

and Gold after posting impressive freshman campaigns. Doten ended 2013 with 12 goals and 16 points, while Morrow played 10 games in an injury-shortened season, producing 13 tallies and a pair of game-winners. Freshmen Alexa Steiber, Christine McGrath and Alexa Maloney enter their first season for the Gators looking to continue to recent trend of outstanding first year play for the Allegheny lacrosse program. “Team offense is a key point for me and we are implementing a few offensive sets that allow for every member of the attack to be involved and be a threat within every role. We hope to see their creative juices flowing within these offensive sets that allow for some neat combination plays. We hope to see multiple people scoring every game and maintain a balanced attack.” In the midfield, the Gators return junior Kelsey Rodgers, an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Collegiate Association (IWLCA) All-Great Lakes Region Second Team selection who led the NCAC in scoring with 61 goals last season, additionally earning All-NCAC First Team plaudits. Sophomore Gusty Mead, who finished 2013 with 28 goals and 16 assists for 44 points, and fellow second year Alyssa Rapelje, a 16-goal scorer in 2013 will return to the midfield for the Gators, Freshman Jeannie Kirk will look to make a splash at midfield. “Midfielders are the unsung heroes within every team. They are doing a lot of the dirty work in the midfield to win the loose balls, come up with the draw or help in the transition game. Though they are not always the highest scorers on the team, they can certainly be key factors on the defensive or offensive side. We have a lot of legs in the midfield this year and we hope to be able to keep legs fresh with constant rotation in the midfield lines.”

“Much like the offense, we expect the defense to work as a unit and make the big stops to allow for the offense to score goals.” added Hughes. “We are also asking the attackers to be huge players in the defense as we want to make sure our defense starts on the opposite end of the field. We want everyone to feel they have a role on defending our cage.” On Feb. 22, the season will kick off as the Gators will travel to Frostburg State to battle the Bobcats. Opening their 2014 home stand on Mar. 5 against Washington & Jefferson, the Gators will hit the road to Michigan, Indiana and California in early March before returning home to battle Saint Vincent on Mar. 25. NCAC competition commences on Mar. 29, when the Gators will take on Denison in Granville, Ohio. A key piece of the season will be a home stretch in which the Gators will play three consecutive contests in the friendly confines of Frank B. Fuhrer Field within two weeks, as Wittenberg (Apr. 5), Kenyon (Apr. 12) and Oberlin (Apr. 15) will all make the trip to Meadville. “We have a short preseason so we will have to get ready very quickly before our first game against Frostburg. We have a lot of talent on this team that can guide us to the playoffs. With a lot of hard work, unity on the field and commitment to the new systems, we can pull together as a group and bring home the first NCAC championship.” concluded Hughes. “With our extended non-conference schedule spreading across a whole month, we have a lot of time to evaluate how we can get better each day. We are looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

The defensive line bolsters the most experience, as seniors Kellee Cribby, Carly Minsterman and Anna Koebley all return for their final campaign in the Blue and Gold. The Allegheny defense also returns a pair of IWLCA All-Great Lakes Region selections in Minsterman and junior Sara Schwartz, who led the team with 45 ground balls

Denison University

Kenyon College

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of ten academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, DePauw University, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster. Starting this season, DePauw University has joined the NCAC as a full member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

Oberlin College

Significantly, all ten NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 270 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports — 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
