Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.”
A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater.
In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics. In the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look, and the Gator mascot “Chompers” was spiced up after a vote of the Allegheny community, and it made its debut during the Feb. 14 basketball doubleheader vs. Ohio Wesleyan at the Wise Center.

Groff, who has served as head coach of the women’s program since its inception in 2005-06, has guided the Gators to unprecedented heights. The Gators qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in their first seven years as a varsity program, producing six top-10 finishes. In 2006, Groff became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to lead both the men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Championships in the same year, with both squads finishing in the top-10.
The 2013-14 men’s squad finished third or higher in eight of their 10 events on the season, before taking fourth in a tightly-contested 72-hole North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Series. Senior Oliver White wrapped up a storybook career for the Blue and Gold, earning a score of individual honors as he posted a stroke average of 74.8, the sixth best single-season mark in program history. White was voted the NCAC Player of the Year, the first for the Gators’ since Ben Rathfon won back-to-back honors in 2005 and ‘06. White then went on to earn his second consecutive GCAA Cleveland Golf/Sirixon Scholar All-America honor, and his third career nod to both the PING All-Region and AllAmerican squads. The Gator women turned in six top-10 finishes in 2013-14, including tournament titles at both the Ohio Wesleyan and Mercyhurst Invitationals. The Gators finished fourth at the NCAC Championship Series, with a pair of golfers earning All-NCAC honors, including senior Miranda Santucci, who finished sixth at the NCAC event, and freshman Alexandra Grimaldis, who took 11th. It marked the third consecutive season that Santucci was an All-NCAC performer, while she also went on to earn a spot on the WGCA All-Scholar Team for a second straight year.
During his tenure as men’s golf coach, Groff has presided over six players who earned a total of 11 All-America honors, while 16 different men have earned 27 All-Region selections. Two Gators - Rathfon (2002) and Chris Moore (2006)- were medalists at the NCAC Championship, and are part of a group of 21 First Team All-NCAC honorees under Groff’s watch. Rathfon was also the recipient of the 2005 Frank Fuhrer III Award as Western Pennsylvania’s top collegiate golfer, while Moore was awarded the Phil Mickelson Award in 2006 as the nation’s top freshman. At the helm of the Gator women, the Gators have earned nine First Team AllNCAC honors dating back to the inaugural NCAC championship in 2011. In addition, four Allegheny women have been All-Region selections, while 2013 grad Liz Blyth earned All-America laurels in both 2010 and ‘11.
In 2004, Groff was named the Easton Golf Pride Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year (men), as he led the Gators to wins at both the fall and spring Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournaments. The following year, he picked up his first of three NCAC Coach of the Year honors, as the squad won six events and captured runner-up at the conference championship. In 2008, Groff was also the National Golf Coaches Association East Region Coach of the Year (women), while earning GCAA MidAtlantic Regional Coach of the Year for the men a season later.
A native of Lancaster, Pa., Groff graduated from Millersville University with a bachelor’s in business administration, and starred as an outfielder on the baseball team, earning Academic All-America following his senior season. He then went on to earn his master’s in sports administration from Kent State University. Groff has been a member of the GCAA Division III Awards Committee, the NGCA East Region Advisory Committee, and the Golf Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic Regional Committe, of which he served as chairperson and voting member of the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll for several years. Currently, he is a member of the NCAA Division III women’s golf Regional Advisory Committee.
2012 Allegheny graduate Abby Soresnen was hired in August 2014 as assistant coach for the Gator men’s and women’s golf programs. The 2012 Allegheny College valedictorian returns to Meadville after spending the two seasons as the head women’s golf coach at Division II Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. In 201314, she guided the Golden Knights to a total of five team titles, including the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship, en-route to earning PSAC Coach of the Year laurels. During her first year at the helm, the Golden Knights turned in a total of six top-five finishes, highlighted by a second-place performance at the PSAC championships.
During her career as a student-athlete at Allegheny, Sorensen was part of three squads that qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championship, while the Gators won the North Coast Athletic Conference crown in 2010-11, and finished second at the league championship in 2011-12. Individually, she turned in six top-10 finishes in her career, highlighted by a second-place effort at the 2011 Allegheny Invitational, and a seventh-place finish at the first event of the 2010 NCAC Championship Series. She was named to the National Golf Association’s All-America Scholar Team following both her junior and senior seasons.
An Erie native and product of Villa Maria Academy, Sorensen graduated from Allegheny with a degree in women’s studies and a minor in political science, and was a two-time Doane Scholar and three-time Distinguished Alden Scholar.

In addition to numerous alumnus that have gone forward to start their own business, chair corporations, and serve as presidents and CEOs of various companies throughout the nation, many Allegheny graduates have pursued a career in golf as coaches and club professionals. One of the program’s most notable alums is Nathan Smith ‘01, who has built one of the most decorated careers in the history of amateur golf. In 2012, Smith joined legends Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan as one of 15 players in USGA history to win the same championship at least four times when he captured the Mid-Amateur Championship, which also resulted in his his fourth invitation to the Masters. He again participated in the 2013 Masters, before representing the United States in the prestigious Walker Cup, where he made the winning putt to clinch the victory for the Americans.

With the privilege of calling The Country Club of Meadville their home course, head coach Jeff Groff and the Allegheny golf programs have benefited greatly from the tutelage of the Club’s head professional, Mike Ferry. A longtime member of the PGA, Ferry assists Groff and the Gators not only on the course, but also with the planning and administration of Allegheny’s two home fall tournaments, the Guy Kuhn Memorial Invitational (men) and the Allegheny Invitational (women), which repeatedly receive high marks from competitors, coaches, and spectators year-in and year-out.
“The Country Club and Allegheny College have had a great working releationship for several decades,” said Ferry. “Such a relationship allows the college golfers a great opportunity to grow in the game and excel.” Ferry was born and raised in Meadville, PA and graduated from Meadville Area High School and Slippery Rock University with a degree in Marketing. Michael was an assistant at Sharon Country Club and Head Golf Professional at Oak Tree Country Club and Avalon Golf & Country Club. While playing at Slippery Rock, he was a two-time First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) honoree, while being named an NCAA Division II All-American following his senior campaign. He has been a member of the PGA of America since 1999 and has over 20 years in the golf business. Mike also competes competively in the Tri-State Section. He and wife Shelby, have three children, Ryan, Paige and Luke.
“The Club more than welcomes the team to practice and compete throughout the fall and spring seasons,” Ferry said. “Should you develop a problem with your golf game and need a helping hand, I would be most willing and pleased to work with you.”

The Gators enjoy their own home course at The Country Club of Meadville, which is located just two miles north of campus. The Club has served as one of the region’s top golf venues for over 100 years.

In addition to its home venue at The Country Club of Meadville, as well as several other courses within close distance at which to play, Allegheny golf has been proud explorers of some of the game’s most prominent venues. In the past several years, the Gators have played some of the world’s most exclusive courses, including Old Prestwick in Ayrshire, Scotland (site of the first British Open), Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania (site of 20 Majors), and Scioto in Columbus, Ohio (site of five PGA Championships). Each year, the Gators get a head start on the spring schedule with a spring break trip to the Tampa, Fla. area, where they’ve played clubs that include the likes of Old Memorial, Feathersound, Saddlebrook, Lexington Oaks, and Tampa Palms.

The NCAC Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster in addition to Earlham College as an affiliate member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.
Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.
A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.
The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

“My experience at Allegheny gave me the confidence to accomplish success in my business and amateur golf career. The curriculum helped me think more critically, as well as helping me develop the communication skills that are imperative in any successful business. To know that I will always be a part of the Allegheny College championship golf program is something I cherish. There are a lot of high level academic institutions in the United States, and there are a number of great athletic programs in the college ranks, but Allegheny College provides student-athletes with an opportunity to pursue both at an extraordinarily high level.” - Matt Clarke ‘83
“As a founding member of the women’s golf program and a student at Allegheny, I had the opportunity to compete at a high level on a nationally-recognized team while receiving an outstanding education. My time with the Gators, both in the classroom and on the golf course, made for a great college experience, and one that I will carry with me for life.” - Alison Bruckner ‘09
Matt Clarke ‘83
Liz Blyth ‘13
“The Allegheny golf program provides students with a highly-competitive athletic environment, while complementing academics and other aspects of college life to create the ideal studentathlete experience. The opportunity has allowed me to distinguish myself in today’s competitive job market, and be well prepared for the new challenges as a young professional.” - Liz Blyth ‘13 “The Allegheny golf program offers a unique experience that combines the opportunity to excel in the classroom, with the commitment to excellence on the course. It provides experiences and relationships that will last forever.” - Rob Hippert ‘12
Chad Kosanovic ‘06
Rob Hippert ‘12
“The golf team at Allegheny is more like a family. We helped each other through homework, classes, practices, and tournaments. The best way to balance school and a sport is to have supportive people by your side, and that is exactly what you will find at Allegheny College.” Hannah Schonau-Taylor ‘11
“When I played golf for Allegheny, I had no idea that it was going to impact my future life as much as it has. Without being on the golf team, I would have never recconected with the college as much as I have. I really enjoy having the teams down to Tampa each year and getting to know the student-athletes. They give me hope for the future!” - Dr. Jeffrey Leimbacher ‘74

“The team at Allegheny allowed me to be a member of a program and a tradition that is one of the most prominent in the area, regardless of division. It is a program where the expectation is to compete for a national championship annually. At Allegheny, I played in places and tournaments I would have never dreamed of being in at the beginning of my college career. And with all of this, I truly realized the full value of a degree from Allegheny following graduation.” Chad Kosanovic ‘06
“My time at Allegheny will forever be cherished. My experiences, friends made, and education received have forever made an impact on me. I am glad I chose Allegheny.” - Michael Wolfe ‘09
