Men’s Soccer Facilities

Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. The softball complex within Robertson Complex features 25-foot long dugouts, a 25-foot high backstop, a full-field underground watering system, a full-field tarpaulin, an 8x15-foot electronic scoreboard, a fully-enclosed press box, a sound system, spacious locker rooms and a permanent fence. Robertson Field, located right next to the softball complex, is the home of Allegheny Baseball. The facility includes a batting cage, which sits along the right-field fence, allowing easy access for in-game use, and two spacious dugouts behind each baseline. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Coaching Staff

Head Coach Angelo Panzetta Angelo Panzetta enters his 15th season as head coach of the Allegheny men’s soccer program. A two-time North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Coach of the Year, Panzetta ranks first on the school’s all-time wins list, and is one of only two coaches in program history with 100 or more wins, posting an 128-89-27 overall record during his 12 seasons on the sidelines prior to the 2014 season. On Oct. 21, 2014, Panzetta became the program leader in career coaching wins with his 133rd career victory, a 5-1 win over Wooster at Frank B. Fuhrer Field. With the victory, Panzetta passed long-time coach Martin Goldberg ‘62, who led the Gators from 1983-1997. Allegheny finished the season by watching senior Axel Monzon and freshman Tolossa Hassan score All-NCAC accolades, as both members of the Blue and Gold earned honorable mention accolades. Allegheny finished the 2013 campaign with a pair of All-NCAC selections in senior goalkeeper John Lichina and junior midfielder Axel Monzon. In addition, junior defender Stefano Wach was named to the NSCAA All-East Region Scholar squad at the conclusion of the season. Panzetta helped Lichina earn his fourth consecutive All-NCAC honor, as Lichina also closed his career as the program leader in shutouts with 21.0 clean sheets.

In 2012, Panzetta ushered the Gators to their best start in 18 years and second best record under his tenure as the squad used a 13-1-1 start to earn a No. 20 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) national poll on Oct. 16. Allegheny ranked as high as No. 3 in the Division III Great Lakes Region poll, also sponsored by the NSCAA, and upended two ranked opponents in six days. The Gators defeated No. 21 Baldwin Wallace, 3-1, at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Sept. 17 before handing No. 17 Berry College a 3-1 loss in Washington, Pa. on Sept. 23. The Gator defense stood firm during the 2012 campaign, combining for eight shutouts, the most since the 2007 season. Thenjunior John Lichina posted four consecutive shutouts from Sept. 2 to Sept. 12, finishing the season with an All-NCAC Honorable Mention selection. In total, Panzetta has coached 64 All-NCAC selections and 14 All-Region honorees. In addition, five Gators earned NSCAA All-East Regional Scholar Honors. Allegheny has made nine NCAC Tournament appearances under the tenure of Panzetta, earning an NCAA Tournament bid in 2004 by using the momentum from the first NCAC Championship in program history over Denison in penalty kicks to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Once in the NCAA tournament, Allegheny earned the first two NCAA Tournament wins in program history by defeating Transylvania and Carnegie Mellon in penalty kicks before falling to eventual National Champion Messiah. The Gators made back-to-back NCAC tournament appearances in the 2010 and 2011 seasons, marking the first time since 2006 and 2007 that the Gators made the post-season in consecutive campaigns. Panzetta earned his first NCAC Coach of the Year honor in the 2002 season, as the Gators posted a 14-6-0 record, tying the school record for wins, while earning the a team a spot in the conference championship game. Allegheny’s magical run in 2004 earned Panzetta his second NCAC Coach of the Year accolade. A native of Irondequoit, N.Y., Panzetta is a 1989 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he turned in a standout collegiate career, becoming the school’s first three-time NCAA Division III AllAmerican First Team selection. While at RIT he led the Tigers to four NCAA playoff appearances, four Empire Athletic Association (EAA) titles, and a 55-7-7 record. Panzetta was also a two-time EAA Player of the Year, and was inducted into the RIT Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Following his career at RIT, Panzetta was selected in the first round of the 1989 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) draft by the Baltimore Blast. He helped Baltimore to a berth in the MISL championship series in 1990, and finished second in the Rookie of the Year balloting. After two seasons with the Blast, he went on to play three seasons for the National Professional Soccer League’s Harrisburg Heat where he helped the team to three playoff appearances. Panzetta is a member of the Harrisburg Heat Hall of Fame, and was recently named to the Heat’s All-Decade team for the 1990s. Before coming to Allegheny, Panzetta served as the top assistant to Dean Foti at Division I Syracuse University. During his seven years as an assistant with the Orangemen, Panzetta coached 18 All-Big East Conference selections, and helped the team advance to the Big East Tournament Semifinals in 1999, and a quarterfinals appearance in 2000. Panzetta earned a master’s degree in Exercise Science from Syracuse in May of 2000. Panzetta’s other coaching experience includes one season at his alma mater RIT, and two seasons as an assistant coach at Gillman High School in Baltimore, Md. He has also coached the New York West Olympic Developmental Program’s (ODP) Under-17 team, and was an evaluator for the Region 1 ODP staff. He is licensed with the United States Soccer Federation, holding an A License. Panzetta and his wife Gina currently reside in Meadville with their daughter Marissa.

Coaching Staff • Why Gators? • Wise Center Assistant Coach Nathan Whitehurst

DAVID V. WISE CENTER

Nathan Whitehurst enters his fourth season as the assistant coach of the Gators and will assist in all aspects of the Allegheny College men’s soccer program. Whitehurst graduated from Lenior-Rhyne University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management, earning a master’s degree in sport management and kinesiology from East Tennessee State University in 2011. Prior to Allegheny, Whitehurst served as the assistant coach at Emory & Henry College, an NCAA Division III institution in Emory, Va. His role included assisting with the day-to-day operations of the program along with scouting opponents and providing training for the athletes on the team. Whitehurst was named the head varsity boys coach at Abingdon High School in Feb. 2010, leading the squad to three consecutive district championships. Whitehurst was named the 2011 District Coach of the Year and Co-Regional Coach of the Year. He also has held positions with Fusion FC in Bristol, Tenn. and Patrick Henry High School in Glade Spring, Va.

One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

While at Lenior-Rhyne, Whitehurst was a four-year athlete on the men’s soccer team and was named co-captain his senior year. He led the team in points as a freshman, setting a single-game record for most points in a game (nine – three goals, three assists) during his career. He helped the Bears to the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament championship, completing a 19-1-1 season with a run to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16. Whitehurst holds a Tennessee Youth E Coaching License and most recently completed the NSCAA Advanced National course along with the NSCAA Goalkeeping II course.

WHY GATORS?

Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

North Coast Athletic Conference NORTH COAST

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, Earlham College, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports; 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 198485. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA All-America or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pacesetter in the 21st century.
