ALLEGHENY LACROSSE Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams. Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus.

Athletic Facilities One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Hughes saw her team succeed in the classroom as three student-athletes were named to the 2014-15 NCAC Academic Honor Roll while the team as a whole garnered Intercolliegate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Honor Roll recognition, marking the eighth consecutive year Allegheny has achieved that as a program.

During her first year on the sidelines for the Gators, Hughes led the squad on the most historic season in program history. Finishing the 2014 campaign with a program-best 15-2 mark, Hughes led Allegheny to a 10-0 start, the best record in program history while mentoring the Gators to seven conference victories, the highest total for the Allegheny lacrosse program. Under her tutelage, seven student-athletes were named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) team, including a program-best four All-NCAC First Team selections. Carly Minsterman ’14, Kelsey Rodgers ’15, McKenzie Bell ’16 and Kaelin Clogan ’17 each earned first team plaudits, as Bell also won the national assists per game title with 4.63 assists per game. In addition, Minsterman, Bell and Clogan additionally earned Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association (IWLCA) All-Great Lakes Region honors, with Bell and Minsterman earning first team honors to compliment Clogan’s second team designation. The 2014 Gators averaged 15.47 goals per game, finishing the year ranked 16th in the nation. Finishing the season with the highest win percentage in the NCAC, the Gators ranked second in the conference in scoring defense (9.29) and win margin (6.18), while Clogan ended the campaign with a 9.99 goals against average, the second highest total in the conference. Prior to her arrival in Meadville, Hughes led the 2013 Purple Knights, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, to the program’s highest win total since 2008, ushering the squad to its highest conference win total in three seasons. In 2012, the Purple Knights finished eighth in the nation with 170 caused turnovers, a single-season program record. Prior to taking the helm at Saint Michael’s College, Hughes served as an assistant for Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont for the 2010 season. Hughes began her coaching career during the 2009 season as an assistant coach at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. In addition to her experience on the sidelines, Hughes has also been instrumental in the implementation of several successful camps and clubs. While serving as the U-17 and U-20 Vermont Far Post Soccer Club coach from 2010 to 2013, Hughes also served as the director of the Saint Michael’s College Total Knights Sports Camp in 2013 in addition to directing the Saint Michael’s College Lacrosse Camp from 2011 to 2013. While playing for the Blue and Gold, Hughes cemented herself as one of the top scorers in program history, leaving Allegheny as the career leader in goals (125), assists (54) and points (179), effectively ushering in an era of prominent scorers for the women’s lacrosse program. Hughes currently ranks second on the all-time career assist list and is third in goals and points. During her time for the Gators, Hughes was named to a pair of Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association (IWLCA) All-Region teams, earning second team selections in 2005 and 2006. In addition, Hughes earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference First Team plaudits in 2005, 2006 and 2007, adding a second team notation in her senior year. Hughes was also named to two post-season NCAC All-Tournament teams. A two-sport athlete, Hughes was also a four-year member of the Allegheny women’s soccer program, finishing her career with 20 goals and three assists for the Gators and earning an All-NCAC honorable mention selection as a junior.

Coaching Staff • Why Gators?

Assistant Coach Erin McGaffigan In August of 2015, Erin McGaffigan was hired as an assistant coach for the Allegheny women’s lacrosse program. McGaffigan arrives in Meadville from Hannover, Germany, where she served as the head coach of DHCHannover for a season. She wore many hats there, working as the offensive and defensive coordinator, goalie specific coach, and strength and conditioning trainer. McGaffigan also assisted with future recruitment at DHC-Hannover and helped develop athletes at Camp Hallerstein in Schwarzenbach an der Saale, Germany in May of 2015. Prior to her stint overseas, McGaffigan spent three seasons as an assistant at Fitchburg State. She helped the Falcons reach consecutive Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) semifinal berths in 2013 and 2014, specializing on the defensive side of the field. Before that, McGaffigan was an assistant coach at the Bay State Games for six years from 2007 to 2013. McGaffigan split time between goaltender and attack for Norwich University from 2007 to 2010 and helped lead the Cadets to Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) titles in her sophomore and senior campaigns. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Norwich in May of 2011.

Why Gators?

Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

ALLEGHENY LACROSSE NCAC TEAM STATS

Allegheny College Meadville, Pa.

DePauw University Greencastle, Ill.

Denison University

Kenyon College

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of ten academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, DePauw University, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster. Starting this season, DePauw University has joined the NCAC as a full member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards.

Oberlin College

Significantly, all ten NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 270 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports — 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
