Robertson Complex & David V. Wise Center

Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-theart Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams.

and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a FieldTurf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track.

One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines.

Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts;

7

In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

Head Coach Stephanie Janice

Few head coaches experience the success in their first season at the helm of a program that Stephanie Janice enjoyed in her first season as the head women’s lacrosse coach at Allegheny College. In her first season, she guided the Gators to numerous programfirsts. Since its inception as a varsity program in 1994, the highest win total for a Gator Women’s Lacrosse team was nine. Under Janice, the 2011 team exploded for 12 wins, including a program-record six straight wins en route to a second-place regular season finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), and the right to host their first NCAC Tournament game against the College of Wooster.

In total, the 2011 team set or tied 16 program and conference game, season, and career records. The record-setting season produced a pair of Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-West Region performers in junior midfielder Kiah Voyer-Colbath and senior attacker Jensen Paterson. Paterson, who broke 11 of the records, was also named as an IWLCA All-American Third Team selection, becoming the first All-American in Allegheny Women’s Lacrosse history. The seventh head coach in the history of the Gator women’s lacrosse program, Janice took over the reins of the Allegheny program after spending two seasons as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Goucher College (Baltimore, MD) where she was primarily responsible for the attack unit and midfielders. She also played an integral role in all of the day-to-day aspects of running the Gophers’ Division III program by planning practice, implementing game strategies, scouting, player development, and successful student-athlete recruitment. During her brief tenure at Goucher, she helped produce nine All-Conference players, and a pair of All-Region standouts. Janice also worked with the Ravens Lacrosse Club (Baltimore, MD), as a head coach for two years of the 2011 team. Janice was in charge of all aspects of team management, player development, practice planning, and assisted heavily in her player’s recruiting process.

Janice, who hails from Southern New Jersey, and was a two-time high school All-American at Shawnee High School, is a 2007 graduate of Johns Hopkins University. She was a four-year starting midfielder for the Division I Blue Jays who, as a senior, was voted the team’s Unsung Hero by her teammates, who also appeared in all 70 games during her four year career. A member of three NCAA Division I Championship Tournament teams, Janice’s play helped guide Johns Hopkins to the National Semifinals as a senior. In addition to her accomplishments at the collegiate level, Janice was a School Coaching Officer at Benenden School in Kent, England for one year from 2007-08. In addidtion to her physical education duties as a teacher, she was also the head lacrosse coach for the upper school. In her one season overseas, she coached the Benenden School to a national runner-up finish. Janice also worked with the Cranbook Lacrosse Club in Kent, England, where she helped develop the sport locally and reached out to local middle schools. Janice finished her Masters of Education specializing in Athletic Program Leadership and Administration from Goucher College in May 2010.

Assistant Coach Caryn Stone Stone is a 2007 graduate from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She has spent a majority of her time, since 2007, teaching and coaching lacrosse across the pond in England. From 2007-2009, Stone taught, coached, and was a boarding house assistant at Pipers Corner School in Great Kingshill, Bucks, England. While at Pipers Corner, she was the coach of not only the schools primary girl’s lacrosse team, but also the U12, U13, U15, and U19 teams. The past two years, Stone was at St. Margaret’s School in Bushey, Herts, England. While at St. Margaret’s, Stone was at the helm of the U12/13, U14 and U19 teams. In addition, Caryn was in charge of preparing and instructing all lacrosse lessons for girls ages 14-18. As a player, Stone was a four year letter winner at Guilford College. In her senior year Caryn was named captain and led the Quakers to their best season in program history. In the summer of 2006, before her senior year, Stone represented the United States as part of the USA Athletes International Team in Australia. Since in 2009, Caryn has played for the Hatch End Hawks out of Rickmansworth, England where she has been a defensive staple, helping lead the team to a winning tour in Amsterdam in June 2010. Stone graduated with a bachelors of science in psychology with a minor in education.

2012 Allegheny Lacrosse Season Preview

ecords were shattered last season, as the 2011 Allegheny women’s lacrosse team had the most productive year in the programs history. The Gators won more games (12), scored more goals (244), and earned more individual accolades than ever before. Still, Allegheny knows that they have far from reached the top of their seemingly unlimited potential, and they look to take the next step during the 2012 campaign. “I think we have created a winning culture here, and it is matched by the work ethic that we have been putting forth all off-season,” said second year head coach Stephanie Janice. “Last year we set the bar high, and the players are really working hard to get better. With that hard work, and our team chemistry, I see them trying to set the bar even higher this season.” Expectations are lofty for the 2012 edition of Allegheny Lacrosse, as they fielded three 40-plus goal scorers in ’11. The Gators return two of those three scorers, with their only departure from the group being Jensen Paterson. Paterson, arguably the best player to ever put on an Allegheny uniform, assaulted the schools record books during her senior campaign; scoring 74 goals and dishing out 38 assists, for a career high 112 points. She finished the season tied for 16 in the country in goals scored, tied for 26 in assists, and seventh in the nation in points. Not to mention she broke the individual season and career program records in goals, assists, and points. While the loss of such a prolific player will undoubtedly hurt, the emergence of another dominating force gave Allegheny much to look forward to. Senior Kiah Voyer-Colbath proved that she is a force to be reckoned with, scoring 60 goals and 68 points to prove that she is one of the top goal scorers in the conference. Her play caught the attention of many, and for her efforts she was named to the All-NCAC first-team, as well as the IWLCA All-West Region Second Team. “Last season Kiah was really able to come out of her shell and break through as a dominating force,” said Janice about her senior leader. “I think she has a lot to prove, is a highly motivated player and has a limitless potential as to what she is capable of accomplishing this season.” However, with such a young squad coming into the year, Allegheny will be leaning on VoyerColbath’s leadership as much as her scoring in the race for the NCAC championship. “It’s almost effortless for her to lead by example on the field,” said Janice. “It has fueled a lot of our success and will be a key for us moving forward into the season.” The leadership responsibilities will not fall to just Voyer-Colbath however, as fellow seniors Caitlin Hubel and Rebecca Crissman will look to lead a group filled with underclassmen. “Caitlin [Hubel] brings such excitement and hard work to the team,” said Janice of her senior who spent her junior season studying abroad. “She is such a great kid to be around, and I think everyone else feeds off of that.” Crissman, a dual sport athlete who earned First-Team All-Conference honors in soccer in the fall, will bring leadership, toughness and awareness to a defensive core that is looking to take their play to the next level in 2012. “[Rebecca] will be key defensively for us this season, seeing as she knows the defensive systems and slide

packages,” said Janice. “She has been a huge influence with the progression of a lot of the underclassmen.” 11 of the 14 players entering the 2012 season for Allegheny are underclassmen, including six returning sophomores. For most teams in the country, this ‘lack of experience’ may be an area of weakness coming into a season; but, for the Gators it might actually be one of the squad’s biggest strengths. “The sophomores are a very integral part of our team this season,” said Janice about her returning second year players. “They were here for my first season last year, so I will really look to them because they know the systems both offensively and defensively. I see no reason why they all can’t out perform their freshman campaigns because not only have they all improved tremendously, they’ve gone through those learning curves as freshmen.” Out-performing last season may prove to be difficult for the returning sophomores as they put up prolific numbers all over the board. The 2014 class combined to score 81 goals and 15 assists, as they accounted for three of the top six scorers on the team. Still coach Janice expects even bigger things in 2012. “Last year we started six freshmen, so as far as learning they have a lot of in-game experience and are very poised,” said Janice. Leading the way will be the pair of Kellee Cribby and Brennan Maine, each of whom was named as an All-NCAC Honorable Mention last season. Last season production also sets a high standard for the incoming freshmen class, who will look to continue the trend of contributing right away. “The freshmen are really coming along,” said Coach Janice. “I see three out of four coming in and really being goal scorers, with Sara [Schwartz] being a defender. They all have fantastic stickwork, a great sense of the game, athleticism, and are really pushing their teammates.” Allegheny ranked nationally in the top 50 in points and goals per game last season, and even though they lost the most prolific scorer in school history, Coach Janice and the Gators do not expect to see much in the way of dropping off this season. “I think last year we really laid the ground work for a lot of different offensive options, and built the kids into triple threats,” said Coach Janice about the progression of the Allegheny offense. “We of course have our 40-plus goal scorers, but I think we have some real sleepers who are poised to break out of their shell, like Kelly Dickson and Monique Villanueva. We are really looking to have seven threats on attack at all times, so you’ll never know who you have to shut down.” With all of the attention going to the offense, often the Gators defense gets over looked which would be a dangerous thing for opponents to do this season. “I see our defense with a lot more ownership this year because they feel they have a lot to prove,” said Coach Janice. “I see a real attitude of protecting their goalkeeper, and defensive eight-meter. They take it very personally, and they play that way, with a lot of enthusiasm and passion.” Looking up front for the Gators to start the season, Allegheny will look to Kelly Dickson, Carly

16

Luitgaarden, and Monique Villanueva to be the three main attackers. “I think Kelly is really going to surprise some people with her ability to finish, Carly is becoming integrated into our offensive sets and learning more every day and Monique is very quick and has been able to get herself into shape in the off-season and respond to play at the college level nicely.” In the middle of the field, the Gators are returning a core to be reckoned with. Lead by Voyer-Colbath, and Maine, Allegheny looks to solidify one of the best midfields in the conference. “Kiah is probably our top returner with tons of experience,” said Coach Janice. “Brennan compliments Kiah as our number two midfielder,” said Janice. “She is just such an athlete, finesse, and is very dangerous with the ball in her stick.” Freshman Kelsey Rodgers will also get some looks in the midfield according to Coach Janice. “Kelsey is very fast, really good on the draw and is a fantastic finisher.” Rounding out the midfield will be Caitlin Hubel and Meredith Gumash who have both showed enormous passion and work ethic for the game, and will have a giant role for Allegheny in 2012. Finally, on the defensive end of the field Rebecca Crissman will anchor the Gator defense in 2012. Noelle Brouillard also returns for Allegheny as the lone junior on the roster. “She’s improved a lot over the off-season and will be a staple on the back end defensively for us,” said Coach Janice. Kellee Cribby was one of two freshmen to earn All-NCAC Honorable Mention honors in 2011, and is back for the Gators looking to improve on their plus-44 goal margin from a year ago. “She has improved tremendously,” said Janice, “and I think she is really going to surprise a lot of people.” The fourth and final defensive spot is still up for grabs; however, strong consideration is going to Anna Koebley and Sara Schwartz, who will both look to lock up a spot in the rotation. “Anna was all over the field for us last year, and we are really looking to specialize her a little more on the defensive end. She is a physical defender who is capable of a large role on defense for us, ” Janice said about her sophomore returner. “Anna’s main competition is Sara [Shwartz], who is quick and aggressive, and has been really

surprising us in practice.” The Gators are poised for another big season, and the sky is the limit on their potential. “This is a really special group, and we are all looking forward to the season,” said Coach Janice in preparation for the 2012 season. “They push each other every day, and we are not going to use age as an excuse because we know we have the talent and ability to accomplish even more than we did last year. We really expect to build off of our success from last season.”
