Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

With about 40 programs of study and the capstone comprehensive Senior Project, the College’s rigorous education results in benefits that include acceptance rates to medical and law school that are twice the national average. And Allegheny’s geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who enjoy biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking.

In 2012, U.S. News and World Report Ranked Allegheny College as the #1 Best Up-and-Coming Liberal Arts College in America. Allegheny College is included among the 100 “best values” in liberal arts colleges in the nation, according to Kiplinger’s, a private financial advising company. Kiplinger’s is the latest national publication to include Allegheny among the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. Allegheny College is also featured in Princeton Review’s The Best Colleges, an annual guidebook profiling North America’s top institutions for undergraduate education; Washington Monthly’s “2012 College Rankings: What Can Colleges Do for the Country?,” which ranks Allegheny College No. 41 of the top 252 liberal arts colleges in the nation; and The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012, which profiles the country’s best and most interesting colleges and universities. Allegheny is also one of 40 colleges included in Loren Pope’s Colleges, is ranked No. 20 by Newweek for academic rigor, and ranked No. 55 by the Sierra Club for Greenest Colleges in America. In addition to publishing its own rankings, Kiplinger gave readers the opportunity to vote on which private colleges represent the best value and Allegheny closed third across the nation in the readers’ poll.

We’re proud of Allegheny’s tradition, beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies. And we know that our professors are leading scholars who pride themselves even more on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it’s our students who make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is.

Gia Celularo ‘88 was the first Allegheny softball player to continue her competitive career beyond graduation as she was signed by the legendary Stratford Brakettes of the Amatuer Softball Association (ASA). Celularo was a four-year starter for the Gators, earning three All-America honors and helping the team to a 133-24 record, including four top-five finishes in the NCAA Tournament. Most recently, Celularo has served as the director of planning/inventory at Kadant Web Systems in Auburn, Mass. In addition to its outstanding tradition on the field that has resulted in the Gators being the seventhwinningest program in NCAA postseason history, Allegheny’s alumni is highly successful and has penetrated all areas of science, medicine, and academia.

FACILITIES THE ROBERTSON ATHLETIC COMPLEX Robertson Field is located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex. The field, which opened in 1992, has played host to the 1994, 1995 and 1996 NCAA Division III Regional Softball Championships, as well as the 2004, 2008, and 2012 NCAC Softball Tournaments. The newly-installed permanent outfield fence sits at 200 feet to left and right field and 210 feet to center field. The facility includes a batting cage, which sits behind the field. The softball complex also features 25-foot long dugouts, a 25-foot high backstop, a full-field underground watering system, a full-field tarpaulin, an 8x15-foot electronic scoreboard, a fully-enclosed press box, a sound system, spacious locker rooms and a fully-enclosed permanent fence. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. Led by tri-captains Beth Giese, Arlie Sears, and Linda Weber, Allegheny recorded a victory in the program’s first-ever home game early in the 1977 season with a 31-8 win against Robert Morris University. Robertson Athletic Complex also includes the 3,000-seat Frank B. Fuhrer Field; one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

FACILITIES THE DAVID V. WISE CENTER One of the most prominent landmarks on the Alleghey campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997, and serves as the hub of Gator athletics. The main part of the facility is the sports forum, located on the upper level. This includes 27,000 feet of open floor space, and it gives the Gator softball team a year-round location to practice, as it includes a full-size batting cage, as well as indoor pitching mounds, hitting tees, nets, and more. Suspended above the sports forum is a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track, while located just off the sports forum is a 2,500 square foot weight room that includes free weights and resistance lifting equipment. The Wise Center also houses a plethora of cardio equipment, including ellipticals, stationary bikes, and treadmills, which were all installed in January 2014. The Wise Center swimming natatorium, the Mellon Pool, is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training and rehab opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all athletic activities. On the ground floor of the Wise Center sits the performance arena, the home of Gator basketball and volleyball. The 1,200-seat gymnasium contains a Neo Shock floor that is used by several NBA teams, while the bleachers, which include several rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full-length courts for basketball practice. Spectators enter the arena at street level onto a spacious concourse that features concessions and a celebration of Allegheny’s rich athletic history.

HEAD COACH BETH CURTISS THE CURTISS FILE

The 2013 campaign marks the second at Allegheny for Beth Curtiss, who has enjoyed a distinguished playing and coaching career in the region. Curtiss quickly made her mark at Allegheny, as the 2013 Gators captured the ninth North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship in program history, going on to advance to the NCAA Division III Regional championship game. The Gators, who finished 24-20 overall and 10-6 in the NCAC regular season, had a number of players garner accolades after the historic season. Second baseman Sadie Stuart, pitcher Caitlin Nealer, first baseman Halea Hayden, and shortstop Stephanie Fort were all named All-NCAC, while Stuart and Nealer went on to be named NFCA All-Region after record-breaking seasons. Stuart set single-season school records with 11 home runs and 19 hit-by-pitches, while Nealer, who has established herself as one of the most dominant pitchers in the nation, won 21 games, including six complete-game shutouts, while setting an NCAC record with 276 strikeouts. Prior to her arrival in Meadville, Curtiss spent nine years at Gannon University, including nine as head coach of the Golden Knights. Under Curtiss’ guidance, Gannon qualified for the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament for three consecutive seasons starting in 2005. In 2007, she led Gannon to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) regular-season and tournament championship. With a career record of 266-139, Curtiss totaled the second-most wins in program history, while her winning percentage of .656 is the best in the history of Gannon softball. During her tenure with the Golden Knights, she also helped guide Joanna Fergus and Jaclyn Corroto to National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America accolades and saw the breaking of 30 individual season and career records.

In her first season with Gannon, she guided the then-Lady Knights to a 4014 record, which was the second-best single-season mark in program history. Gannon won at least 20 games every year under Curtiss’ tutelage, while the 2002 and 2003 squads advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Championship. The Golden Knights made national noise during the 2005 campaign, earning the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory en route to another stellar season. The following season, Curtiss’ club excelled even further, finishing one win away from the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship while boasting a 41-18 overall record. After taking a pause in her coaching career following the 2008 campaign, Curtiss served for three years as an admissions representative at the Fortis Institute in Erie, Pa. In 2011, she was an assistant for Division II Mercyhurst College with an emphasis on training the defensive infielders. Curtiss graduated Summa Cum Laude from Gannon University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Early Childhood Education in 1999. On the field, Curtiss was a four-year letterwinner for the Knights, twice being named AllGLIAC while also being named to the NFCA All-Academic Team. Before becoming head coach at Gannon, Curtiss served for four years as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Metro Express (16-under) managing and coaching high school athletes in the Junior Olympic Development program. Curtiss resides in Erie with her family, including husband Shaun, daughter Grace (6), and son Luke (4).

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of 10 academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster. The NCAC has produced 65 NCAA Team Championships across all sports since its inception in 1983. NCAC softball has enjoyed a reputation as one of the strongest leagues at the NCAA Division III level. No school in the conference has been able to rival Allegheny’s illustrious history which includes 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, 10 trips to the NCAA World Series, 47 NCAA playoff wins, 22 All-Americans, and a national runnerup finish (1988). The Gators rank as the seventh winningest program in the history of Division III. Denison also boasts a strong history with four NCAA appearances and a spot in the 2008 NCAA Regional Championship. Wittenberg has earned two NCAA bids in the last 10 seasons while DePauw earned a fifth-place finish at the 2010 and 2011 NCAA World Series. The Tigers made five consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament field before 2012 and led the nation in victories in 2008. Since the NCAC began sponsoring softball as a championship sport in 1998, four different teams have claimed regular-season conference championships. Denison leads the way in that grouping with eight titles (2001-03, 2006-07, 2009-11), while Allegheny has captured five (1998, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2012), Ohio Wesleyan three (2004-05. 2010) and Wittenberg one (2000). The NCAC instituted the conference tournament in 2001 to determine the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red have earned six tournament titles (2001-02, 2006, 2008-09, 2012), followed by Allegheny with four (2004-05, 2007, 2013). Hiram was won the league’s postseason championship twice (2009, 2011), while Wittenberg secured the title in 2003.
