Arrival Survial Orientation: “a great warm up for college life” WELCOME BACK, ALLEGHENY CAMPUS!!! Attend the Spring, 2017 ARRIVAL SURVIVAL ORIENTATION!
January 25th Register at:
ccac.edu/appointent-central By Malik Vincent Allegheny View Co-Advisor Ever wonder about where you’d need to go to get to your Biology lab this semester? Or to find out what parking options there are in the immediate proximity of campus? As the largest of the four campuses that make up the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), the North Shore location, situated in Olde Allegheny City, could pose a slew of questions that one may need answered. There isn’t a better way to get that than the Arrival Survival event-- a new student orientation that serves as a one-stop hub for campus information. “It’s a lot of information and if you don’t go, it can increase your likelihood of being
lost,” Amina Iskandarova, a nursing major at Allegheny Campus said. “It puts you on track for receiving all of the pertinent onboarding information and resources.” Iskandarova is a part of the CCAC Ambassadors Program that serves as a key component for the campus orientations on a semester-by-semester basis. From attaining what the college calls a NetID (which grants students access to the computers and online services) to getting a student photo ID, or avoiding a parking ticket by getting registered for a parking permit, the Arrival Survival takes care of that all in just hours. The orientation will begin promptly at

5:30 PM on Jan 25 and will kick off with an informational session complete with addresses from academic advisors, the dean of student development, Dr. Rosalynn Wilson, and the interim director of Student Life, Christine McQuaide. The Student Services Center (SSC) auditorium, located on that building’s 2nd floor, is where all parties should report. A full tour featuring each of the seven buildings on Allegheny Campus is given during the orientation which offers its participants a small history lesson of the buildings. It also lets students know what important operations of the campus take place at those respective locations.
Students can typically find coffee, pizza, and sweet treats from Starbucks waiting for them when they arrive. It is also a great opportunity to pick up the student directory that was produced by the Office of Student Life. A 50-page full color book that showcases student photos and highlights different activities that are going to take place around the Allegheny Campus and Homewood-Brushton center during the Spring 2017 semester. “Basically, the Arrival Survival Orientation is a warm up for college life,” Iskandarova said. CAMPUS NEWS: Students probably think about Academic Advising only when they want to register for classes or change their schedule, but Academic Advising offers much more than help with registration. Academic advisors help students make the most out of their college experience. An advisor serves as a guide, working in partnership with students, to help them navigate the demands of college life. They listen to what students have to say. They work to understand the student perspective. Remember, advisors were students themselves once and recognize how challenging college can be. College requires a student to think and act in new ways. There are new responsibilities and expectations that students don’t always know how to handle. If the student is juggling a job and family responsibilities, college can feel overwhelming. Students often think that the only solution is to drop out of school, but that is seldom the best thing to do. Instead, they should speak with an academic advisor to discuss other options. Advisors can provide the help students need – • Help to understand the requirements of a program of study and how to plan ahead to complete the program. It’s easy to look at all of the credits required to complete a program and see it as too long a road to graduation. It’s more manageable when
you plan ahead. • Help to make the right academic decisions to achieve goals. There are right decisions and wrong decisions. Frustration or fear of failure causes some students to make the wrong ones. Talk it over with an academic advisor before making a decision that could do more harm than good. • Help to make informed/wise choices about course scheduling options. Students are often in a hurry to finish their degree and move on to a career or a four-year institution. Making careful, well-thought-out decisions will get students to completion with a lot less stress. • Help to learn to use the many support services the College has in place. Advisors can’t solve all problems, but they know CCAC and what it has to offer. They help students to address problems and concerns. • Help to resolve the academic challenges students may be facing. Academic advisors are teaching faculty. They understand what it takes to learn and be successful in college. Go to the source when seeking help with academic problems. Speak to an academic advisor. Academic advisors are here to help students with so much more than just scheduling classes. Stop in and let us help you to make the most of your education at CCAC. We are open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Fridays. We are also open from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on the second Saturday of each month. Check the semester Credit Schedule for extended Saturday hours.

Why We Became Involved In Student Life...
I felt the need to get more involved with CCAC and this was the perfect outlet. Working full-time, it is hard to connect with other students, and the Ambassador Program gave me that opportunity. John Ivanchan
Hey, it’s a life outside the classroom! What’s more fun than that? I am so glad that I got involved and got the chance to meet wonderful people. Surbhi Sharma
Before I made the decision to join Student Life, my involvement in CCAC was limited to attending class and buying lunch. That wasn’t enough. For me, the decision to join Student Life was a decision to take a step out of my comfort zone. This opened up a new world to myself full of people and opportunities, which were once outside of my grasp. I would not change the decision to become involved for anything. Drew Moorefield
I became involved in Student Life because I love the game of basketball. CCAC does a great job of providing us with everything we need for the sport and more. I made some of my best friends by becoming involved, and playing on the basketball team. Shawn Rogers
