The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Dear Alumni and Friends, As we continue our year of “Honoring Traditions and Embracing the Future”, we take a moment to look into the mirror and measure ourselves against the standards of our governing institutions. As many of you know, our school is reviewed every six years by the Southern Association for Colleges and Secondary Schools (SACS) to determine whether we are creating opportunity for students to be prepared academically for college. ACND is also a member of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) that has recently developed and begun to implement National Standards for Catholic Schools. These standards are designed to hold Catholic schools accountable for emulating catholic identity, proper governance and leadership, the pursuit of academic excellence, and providing for operational vitality. These newly defined Standards for Catholic Schools are not foreign to Archbishop Curley Notre Dame. Since the arrival of the Christian Brothers in 1984 and for 30 years thereafter, our school has been held to the high standards defined by the “Essential Elements of Edmund Rice.” In a process similar to the academic one, our school has undergone reviews by the Edmund Rice Office of Schools to ensure that we are in line with the Essential Elements. This coming March, we will once again look in the mirror and self evaluate where it is we need improvement. This self evaluation will be followed by a visitation and review by a panel of fellow educators who will assist us in our quest for betterment. This spring issue of our magazine will help you get better acquainted with the Essential Elements and what it means to be an Edmund Rice School. Our former principal, Brother Moffett, expressed an Edmund Rice Education in a very succinct way in stating that we followed RICE: Responsible, Individualized, Catholic, Engagement. Each of our students upon graduation is a responsible member of society who has received an individualized education tailored to his or her needs and strengths; is “Catholic” in a religious sense but also in the universality of our surrounding community; is engaged in his or her life and the world around them. These standards not only make our school and each student better, they create a better world for all. If you are a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, Archbishop Curley High School or ACND, you can attest that we, administrators, teachers and students all strive to not only meet the standards, but to surpass them in every aspect so that every graduate of ACND becomes a positive impact in the world.

The Essential Elements of a Christian Brother Education Brother Jason M. Ford, CFC 11 years teaching and 3 years at ACND; Coordinator of Student Services, Director of Campus Ministry, Director of Enrollment Management, teaches middle school Theology and Senior Theology, Ethics in Leadership I see my role at ACND as being an ear for our students to listen to their faith journey as well as other major events in their lives. The gift of being a brother at ACND is to be fully present to the mission of our school, to develop a learning environment that calls each member to be RESPONSIBLE within the community in an INDIVIDUALIZED atmosphere that values our CATHOLIC identity while encouraging all of our students to become ENGAGED in the variety of activities and sports we offer. As brothers we support and encourage all of our faculty, students, and families to realize their God given gifts and help them to share them with our community and the world.
For many years, we have embraced the Essential Elements of a Christian Brother Education. Today, as we look forward, inundated by technology and the challenge to keep our students engaged, we still strive to instill in them a desire to be compassionate and passionate about the role they undertake in this ever-changing modern world. I am deeply thankful, humbled, and proud to be a Christian Brother teaching at this excellent Christian Brothers’ school. Our greatest strength is not academic or athletic excellence or state-of-the-art facilities, although we certainly value those goals. Our core goal, as I see it, is to release in each member of our school community the power to release the Christ-like good in others. Our greatest strength is that we follow closely in the tradition of Christian Brother education: we seek to educate each person to the best of our ability and theirs and inculcate the commitment to compassionate service, especially of the neediest among us.
As a Christian Brother and a guidance counselor at ACND I can make a difference in the lives of students in a unique way. My presence of simply being a Brother reminds students of the importance of simplicity of life and community. Ministering to the poor means helping any student who lacks something essential including love, respect and dignity.

As a Brother I have paid closer attention to those who are the most marginalized, whether it be economic, racial, or academic. Trying to right injustice is the work of a Brother of Edmund Rice; alleviating the cycle of poverty through education; keeping the faith alive in the lives of young people.

Daily Elements of an ACND Education • Proclaims and Witnesses to its Catholic Identity
On September 27 and 28th, ACND hosted a group of students from Colegio Cardenal Newman, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Colegio Stella Maris, Montevideo, Uruguay and accompanied them to the ACTION Student Leadership Workshop held in St. John’s, Florida. Approximately 80 students from schools operated or staffed by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers North America and Latin America gathered to celebrate the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers. The workshop focused on leadership development, advocacy, community building, and communication among the schools.
On August 28th, Archbishop Wenski presided over the “Opening School Mass.” In explaining the importance of knowing oneself, he told students: “A Catholic education will help you know who you are. No one is an accident and each one of you is a thought of God. God has made you to serve him and to love him.”
Last month, the Edmund Rice Community (ERC) organized ACND’s “17th Annual HungerFest.” Held each year during Lent, student and adult participants fast while packing and distributing lunches to Miami’s homeless at Camillus House and Miami Rescue Mission. They also wash cars to raise funds for missions in Haiti and Peru. Established in 1996, the ERC commits itself to the ideals of prayer, community, and service in the tradition of Br. Edmund Ignatius Rice. The group plans and organizes a variety of community service projects throughout the year such as organizing food and clothing drives, visiting senior citizen centers, and providing landscaping and maintenance services to neighboring inner-city Catholic grammar schools.
“Freshmen Day of Reflection” took place on September 20th. The day begins with a class Mass celebrated by Fr. Kent and the days’ events are led by the Senior Ethics in Leadership Class. Small group activities take place in the morning where students discuss dealing with relationships with each other, family, and God. The day ends with Seniors and Freshmen sharing thoughts about what makes ACND special and unique. In this photo, two seniors explain the affirmation activity to Freshmen in KASA C.
• Stands in Solidarity with Those Marginalized by Poverty and Injustice In November, 40 students attended the "Unleashing Entrepreneurship in Haiti" discussion hosted by St. Thomas University's School of Business. Special guest, Honorable Laurent Lamothe, Prime Minister of Haiti, spoke about the outlook for the future of Haiti. The ACND group represented the only high school invited to attend. St. Thomas’ Dean J. Antonio "Tony" Villamil stated: "South Florida youth had the opportunity to listen to an international figure, learn about businesses' social responsibility and unleash the calling to help our economically disadvantaged neighbors in the Caribbean Basin."

A Christian Brother education provides a disciplined safe atmosphere in which students are free to grow and take responsibility for their own learning and for the life of the community.
The Knightingales received Honorable Mention in the Small Ensemble Category at the 26th Annual Caroling Competition held in Coral Gables. Presented by Holtz Children’s Hospital, the competition is held every year beginning the Wednesday after Thanksgiving.
The members of the executive board of the school and the senior class officers received their iPads from the principal in a private ceremony to officially kick off the iPad era at ACND.
“The iPads are a great new learning tool for both teachers and students,” explained ACND Principal Douglas Romanik. “As we have for many years, we will continue to learn together and discover together. We are part of a collaborative effort to learn these things.” Plans will continue to implement the “flipped classroom” where students, under the direct guidance of their teachers, work on constructing a lesson and completing assignments while in the classroom.
With an outstanding performance at Regionals and four runners setting personal records, the Boys Cross Country Team qualified to run at the State Championships held last November in Tallahassee. Team Coach Br. John Corcoran, CFC stated, “For the second year in a row we defied the odds and others’ predictions and trusted out work ethic and team pride while joining the tradition of ACND state qualifiers – 14 times in the last 20 years!”

The Troubadours represented the only private school invited to attend the “Jazz Roots Workshop“ at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The student musicians attended a sound-check rehearsal with Grammy Award Winners George Benson and Freddy Cole, followed by a performance titled “Unforgettable – A Tribute to Nat ‘King’ Cole.”
On November 5th, ACND's history teacher, David Monaco, along with his seventh period U.S. history class, helped unveil a reproduction of the Rembrandt Peale portrait of the United States' first President, George Washington. "Today was an appropriate day for the unveiling because it was on the eve of the most important presidential election in recent memory," Mr. Monaco said.

In October, Father Daniel Robert Kent, ACND’s AP Spanish Literature Teacher, won the Cervantes Outstanding Educator Award. The award helps pay special tribute during Hispanic Heritage Month to those members of the Miami-Dade County Schools who have made significant contributions to promoting excellence in the education of the area’s Hispanic Students. “Father Kent has served the larger community at ACND for over 40 years and inspired generations of students,” commented Douglas Romanik. “He has been a great asset to our community both spiritually and intellectually faithfully guiding students with his wit and knowledge.”
In November, students participated in a Community Service Day -- a Community Learning Partnership of Miami Shores (CLP) initiative. Students helped and brought cheer to residents of the Pines Nursing Home in Miami. The CLP’s purpose is to provide a forum for sharing community, school, and university educational resources and opportunities that support three program components: Student Leadership Development, Teacher Professional Development, and Community Engagement. Last October, the Knights for Life Club spearheaded a baby bottle campaign. With 150 baby bottles given to the ACND by the Respect Life Office, students collected funds to help expectant mothers that are having financial difficulty and do not want to have an abortion.
On October 12th, the Br. Rice Honors Academy students visited Gator Park. The field trip provided a practical understanding of what was learned in class -- studying the scientific method and applying it to the problem of snake overpopulation.
Thanks to the Parent Council, ACND purchased its’ first two Apple TV’s in September and at the end of the year David Gerrits ’78 and his family donated $5,000.00 towards Classroom Technology Upgrades.
The St. Rose Girls’ Basketball Team Won First Place at ACND’s First Middle School Girls’ Basketball Tournament

The Call to Heal On February 6th, ACND held its 3rd Heritage Day titled “The Call to Heal.” The event brought back eight alumni members who have pursued careers in the healthcare profession. The participants led classroom sessions where current students had an opportunity to hear about their careers, how they came to choose their profession, and the education needed beyond high school graduation. His love for medicine began when he was five and the memories of spending time with his grandfather, a general practitioner in Cuba. He recalled watching his grandfather repair a wound of a gardener who had cut himself with a machete – “I didn’t know what a long road it was to follow the steps of those in front of you.”

The Call to Heal – Alum Spotlight While at ACND, Ralph received the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Math and Science Award. Commenting about how he knew in high school that he would follow a career path in medicine, he said: “Receiving the award from the staff at ACND among many other well qualified candidates gave me tremendous confidence. I entered Columbia University with confidence that I was well prepared and would do well in my chosen major. I was naturally attracted to medicine because of my affinity for the sciences but also because I felt I could put my talents to good use by affecting other people's lives in a very positive way.”
Dr. Cyrus Jollivette ’64 Florida Blue Foundation, (formerly Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation) and ACND Prep congratulate Dr. Cyrus Jollivette ’64 on his retirement as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Florida Blue Foundation. We thank Dr. Jollivette for his love and dedication for our school and the generosity of Florida Blue Foundation for its commitment to our summer programs.
Ralph says that his four years at ACND were the most memorable years of his life and he still keeps in touch with many of his former classmates. He enjoyed being on both the football and track teams and proudly recalls that the football team was ranked among the top 10 teams in the state for its division. Ralph was recognized as one of the top running backs on the All State team and received the Scholar-Athlete award in his senior year.

Although Ralph could not attend February’s Heritage Day, he has offered the following advice to current students and should any students wish to ask questions or seek advice about pursuing a medical career , he may be reached by email at ralphmaxy@carolinaortho.com. To current students at ACND who may wish to pursue a career in health care, I would share the following: First, be confident that ACND prepares you well for the next step -- getting through even the most challenging curriculum at any institution of higher learning in this country. Second, prepare yourself as much as possible even at this stage by familiarizing yourself with what it means to be a health care professional. Volunteer at the community clinic, a physician's office, a hospital ward, or an emergency room. Most physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals are quite receptive to having you shadow them for a while. Spend as much time as you can in that environment. You will be surprised at how much you'll pick up by simply being there. Lastly, it has been my experience that the most successful healthcare professionals and those most appreciated by their patients are the ones who genuinely care about the people they are treating. It may sound cliché, but it's true. Patients can sense if the interaction with you is perceived as a job for you, if there is an ulterior motive, or if you genuinely care about helping them. If you innately have that human quality, don't lose it.
Ralph is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spine surgery. He treats adult and pediatric patients with complex spinal injuries and disorders. This includes congenital, traumatic, and degenerative disorders as well as tumors involving the spine. Ralph is one of fifteen orthopedic surgeons at Carolina Orthopedic Specialists located in Hickory, North Carolina. He has worked there since completing his training. Following graduation at ACND, Ralph completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia University in 1990 and then his medical degree at at the New York University School of Medicine in 1994. He then completed a five year residency in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University's Presbyterian Hospital and one year of subspecialty training in spinal surgery at the Kenton D. L. Foloeatherman Spine Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. Ralph and his wife Rachele have two boys, Christopher and Andrew. 7

ACND 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees Charlie Diamond ’55

Since 29 years old, Lisa has dedicated herself to both fighting cancer and making a difference. In 1991, after 9 months of being misdiagnosed, Lisa was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. In 2003, her brother Vince and his wife Terry developed the Lisa Boccard/Coral Springs Breast Cancer Foundation in honor of Lisa’s journey. The organization helps provide free mammograms to women who are unable to afford them. With Lisa involved, their initiative grew and in 2008 it evolved to become the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. To date the fund has provided over 700 mammograms and identified nearly 40 women with breast cancer and provided follow-up treatment. After numerous needles, drugs, chemo, radiation, 23 surgeries, hundreds of pills, tears, fear, hope, faith, this September marks her 10th year of survival from Metastatic Breast Cancer.
Charlie was the first Curley graduate to receive a football scholarship to the University of Miami and would become the first player from a parochial school to be selected to both the Miami Herald and Miami News “All City” teams. Charlie also won a gold medal for the shot-put in the state finals and set a new state record. At UM, he was a three year letterman and starting tackle for the Canes. Upon graduation, he played professional football for the British Columbia Lions/Canadian Football League. Charlie also played for the Dallas Texans winning the AFL Championship in 1962 and would conclude his professional career in 1963 with the Kansas City Chiefs. Following his retirement from football, he worked as teacher and coach for Miami-Dade Public Schools. In retirement, Charlie enjoys fishing and diving in the Florida Keys.

Doreann is a Clinical Staff/Charge Nurse in the Trauma Resuscitation Unit at Ryder Trauma Center as well as the Clinical Coordinator for the University Of Miami Advanced Trauma Life Support Courses. She has been employed at Jackson Memorial Hospital since 1993 after receiving a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida International University. Doreann also holds a Master of Science in Nursing as Family Nurse Practitioner form Florida Atlantic University. Related to her field of expertise, she has lectured and participated in projects outside of the US in Ecuador, Nassau/Freeport, and Brazil. Doreann’s work in the community has included: speaking about Trauma Safety and Awareness at school career days; developing a Trauma Awareness Day for high school students; and attending an annual children’s burn youth camp.
Jim is President and Chief Executive Officer of Parkway Properties, a NYSE-listed office REIT headquartered in Orlando, Florida. He joined Parkway in 2011 through the company’s merger with Eola Capital where he served as founder and chairman. Parkway has since experienced tremendous growth and strategic realignment focusing on building a premier portfolio of office properties in the Sunbelt. Jim currently serves on the board of directors of United Legacy Bank in Orlando and is a member of the chairman’s circle of the real estate advisory board of the Warrington College of Business Administration at the University of Florida. Jim graduated from the University of Florida a Bachelor of Science in Real Estate. Jim and his wife have three children: Richard, Lauren, and Bouldin.
Dorothy (Chauveron) Sklaroff
Silvia Lizama ‘75
Dorothy, a retired teacher and form ACND CAP Advisor, graduated from New York University and worked there until she relocated with her husband to Miami. She would later take masters courses in reading at Barry University and continue her teaching career. Dorothy is a well-loved teacher and has been awarded many times for her work. As a college advisor, she was very active in organizing college fairs and hosting college representatives on campus. Dorothy ensured that students would have all that was needed to prepare for college in on time and tutored for SAT, ACT, and ASFAB examinations. In addition, she was hired by the University of Florida to read resumé and essays, evaluate students’ credentials, and assess which applicants would be most suitable for the school. Dorothy is married and has six children.
Silvia was born in Havana, Cuba, and currently lives in Hollywood, Florida. She earned her MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, and her BFA degree from Barry University, where she is now Chair of the Department of Fine Arts and Professor of Photography. Having exhibited her hand colored photographs since 1978, Silvia’s work has gained national and international attention and has been included in prestigious exhibitions and collections, as well as publications. Her major awards include the Southern Arts Federation/NEA Regional Visual Arts Fellowship Grant and the South Florida Cultural Consortium Grant, as well as a Miami Dade Art in Public Places commission for the Deering Estate in Miami, Florida.
John Zavertnik
Blaine Willenborg ’78
John graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1970 and the University of Florida School of Law in 1973. He has been a practicing attorney with Sinclair Louis Heath Nussbaum & Zavertnik PA for the last 39 years. John and his wife Linda have been married for over 39 years and have four children. All have graduated from St. Rose of Lima and ACND as follows: Michael ’95, Timothy ’99, Kelly ’01, and Katherine ’03. For over 20 years, John has been a very active parent/alumni parent volunteer. His service roles included the Parent’s Countil PIP Saturday work day; coordinator and facilities committee chairman from 2000 to the present; a member of the ACND advisory board; member of the facilities and finance committees from 2003 to the present; and assistant softball coach since 1998. John gives credit to Br. Richard DeMaria for encouraging him to become involved at ACND and is very thankful for the experience.
As a high school student, Blaine distinguished himself as one of the finest tennis players in the history of Florida High School Tennis. He and Chris Evert were the only two high school athletes to win three individual high school state championships at the #1 singles position. As a member of the United States Jr. Davis Cup Team, Blaine represented the United States at Jr. Wimbledon, Jr. US Open, and Jr. French Open. He guided Curley to the only two high school state championships in school. Following high school graduation, Blaine attended UCLA where he holds the career doubles record for the most doubles wins and among his many credits, was the #1 seed in the 1979 and 1981 NCAA Doubles Championships. Today, Blaine works as Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in Aventura. He and his wife Lori have three children: Blair, Mallory, and Blaine Andrew.

The ACND Gallery of Art The opening reception of Caryne HavicanMender’s Solo Show “Renewed Glory” took place last September in the ACND Gallery. The event was also the first parent social of the academic year. Ms. Havican-Mender joins ACND this year as gallery manager and chief curator. Her expertise is a welcome addition to the gallery. His professional work ranges from comics, medical and architectural illustrations, graphic design, and paintings. Mr. Ramirez acquired artistic skills in Mexico. He enjoys experimenting with various paints including coffee on wood to emulate the sepia tone found in antique photographs The 4th Annual Middle School Art Festival began with an opening reception held during Catholic School’s Week. The Festival is an opportunity to showcase the value of art in education while giving participants an opportunity to learn what artists typically have to do to get their art displayed. The students first go through the selection process with art teachers selecting work to represent each school and, then, the art work is reviewed by area art professionals. Participating schools were: St. Mary, St. Patrick, Our Lady of the Lakes, Br. Rice Honors Academy, St. Rose of Lima, St. Lawrence, St. Hugh’s, Sts. Peter and Paul, St. John the Apostle, and St. Lawrence.
Ms. Havican-Mender is a figurative painter, abstract assemblage artist and former Adjunct Professor who currently creates artifacts pulled from the urban landscape. She finds discarded man-made objects in abandoned houses, junkyards, and flea markets and allows the viewer to re-discover the discarded in her works of art providing hints of traditional art subject matter such as landscapes, as well as contemporary abstract works. She received her BFA at College of Creative Studies and her Masters in Theater Design at University of Detroit, where she taught set design courses on the Island of Spetses, Greece. She continued on to Aquinas College for a K-12 Art Certification and a MFA at MIU in 2011. Apart from her work as an artist, Ms. Havican-Mender teaches art at the high school level.

At the end of October, ACND students welcomed a group of AP US History juniors from Miami Country Day to the gallery’s “Looking at Lincoln” exhibit. The exhibit, underwritten by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York City, explores the Civil War and issues of slavery from the standpoint of political cartoons of Lincoln’s contemporaries. To enhance the educational experience, Mr. David Monaco (ACND’s US History, Government, and Economics teacher) added pieces from his personal collection that includes a 150 year old newspaper with a cartoon of Lincoln.
Caryne Havican-Mender, ACND’s new gallery manager stands with Tiffany Chestler, one of the middle school art festival judges. Ms. Chestler is Manager and Curator of the Craig Robins Collection and cultural programming for the Miami Design District's monthly Art and Design Night.
From November through to January, the gallery exhibited the works of ACND’s very own Yunier Cervino Oliver and Jose Ramirez. Mr. Oliver presented a series of oil paintings and Mr. Ramirez, mixed-media works on wood and canvas. Mr. Oliver (ACND’s art teacher) holds a BFA in Illustration from the Ringling College of Art in Sarasota, FL.
The ACND Gallery of Art (established in 2007) is offered as an expression of solidarity with its neighbors in the historic Buena Vista, Brentwood and Little Haiti sections of the upper east side of Miami as well as the developing areas of the Design District, Wynwood Arts District, and Downtown Arts and Entertainment District. Living Inspired by the Life of Blessed Edmund Rice The Life of Blessed Edmund Rice – businessman, husband, father, widower, religious brother, teacher, and founder – challenges all involved in Christian Brother Education to live and teach Gospel values in today’s world. His charism inspires the Essential Elements of a Christian Brother Education. This year’s HungerFest raised over $2,800.00 in sponsor contributions and $600.00 from the car wash. Over 3,100 lunches were packed and delivered to Miami’s homeless at: St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank at St. Patrick’s, the Housing Assistance Center, the Miami Rescue Mission and the Women’s House, Camillus House, Better Way, and Lotus Women’s Shelter.
This exhibit will be on view at the ACND Gallery through the end of March, 2013 and then be shown in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. ACND Prep thanks the Buena Vista Deli (www.buenavistadeli.com) for its donation to the Opening Reception.

On February 26th, Archbishop Thomas Wenski opened the ACND Gallery’s most recent exhibit: “Vision for a New Haiti Cathedral: Winning Competition Designs for Rebuilding the Notre Dame de L’Assomption Cathedral, Port-au-Prince, Haiti.” Last fall, architects from throughout the world answered the invitation launched by the Archbishop of Port-au-Prince Mgr. Guyre Poulard to help build a new cathedral for the nation’s capital. The competition, which drew 134 submissions, was organized by the Archdiocese of Port-auPrince and Faith and Form Magazine. In his petition, Mgr. Poulard stated: “The ideal design must engage the future and celebrate life. Still, it must be mindful of the past and memorialize the thousands who died and were injured in the earthquake of January 12, 2010.”

An exhibition opening took place at the University of Miami’s Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center Irvin Korach Gallery on January 17, 2013 with opening remarks by Haitian writer and juror Edwidge Danticat. The exhibit was curated by Joachim Perez and UM’s School of Architecture Dean, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk was the lead juror of the six member selection jury.

Victoria Novinger ’09 graduated from the University of Miami with a major in Psychology and minor in Human and Social Development on December 13, 2012. She will be attending grad school at the University of South Florida this Fall.

Upon retiring to Lakeland, Florida, Neal received the first "Knight for Life" medal for his service to ACND for 10 years (never missing a day of work.)
