WELCOME to the nail family XEMU RECORDS pg 6–7

Xemu Records was founded in 1992, in New York City, by Cevin Soling. Originally conceived as an ironic nod to underground cult movements of the ’60s and ’70s, the label has since grown to become one of the dominant homes for contemporary psychedelic rock bands. While still being firmly entrenched in the independent scene, the label gained international attention with the release of the album When Pigs Fly, a compilation of outlandish pairings comprised of songs one would not expect a particular artist to perform. The album included recordings by Devo, Ani DiFranco, Jackie Chan, Alex Chilton and the Box Tops, The Fixx, Billy Preston, Don Ho, and others. In addition, Xemu conceived of transforming the Hard Café into a live venue and toured one of its artists as the first to perform at these locations. The addition of Dead Meadow bassist Steve Kille, and the reissue of the Dead Meadow back catalog along with their new releases, attracted other notable bands as the label developed an esteemed reputation for releasing the top artists in the psych-alternative music scene.

“Punk’s Not Dead!” When The Exploited sang those words in 1981, it was a declaration from the last group of punk rock survivors to make their presence known before it was too late. Thirty years later, the battle cry for true punk rockers is not coming from the UK or New York, but from Sin City itself, as Las Vegas’ Surrounded By Thieves arrive to deliver music that issues a hard-hitting yet energetic, melodic statement that stays true to a form of music that today bears little resemblance to that which took over the world in the late ’70s. One Stop Past Your Destination is Tom Laverack’s seventh full-length release, and fittingly pulls from both his own past catalog as well as from the band Just Desserts (where Laverack and Larry Fessenden are bandmates). Though a “collection,” 10 of the 17 tracks have never been released before, and the tracks come equally from hi-fi and lo-fi environments. Though there are several four-track recordings included, the majority of the offerings are older tracks recorded at Whaton Tiers’ old Fun City Studio, or newer ones recorded with Mark Ambrosino (co-founder of Sojourn Records) at his Madhouse studio in Queens. Tiers, known for his work with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, and Helmet, both produced and played drums on four of the songs.

Old Testament Old Testament

Selling Points

• Debut album by Jason Simon’s (Dead Meadow) Los Angeles-based experimental/alt-rock band. • Featuring Nate Ryan, guitarist from The Black Angels. • Original cover art by longtime Matador Records art director Mark Ohe. • RIYL: Dead Meadow, Bod Dylan, Fred Neil.

Media & Marketing

• Publicity through Jerry Graham. • Album will be serviced to AAA, non-comm, and college radio stations across the U.S.

Old Testament emerges from the eerie haze of a long-lost America, a land filled with droning backwoods ballads and haunting blues. Warbling guitars, electric organ, singing drums, blown out harmonica, and droning harmonium come together to create a sound residing somewhere between Dock Boggs, Dylan, The Band’s Basement Tapes, and one of Fred Neil’s raga-inspired improvisations.

Old Testament formed in Los Angeles in 2012 when Jason Simon of psych rock faves Dead Meadow began to accumulate a stash of songs that fell outside the realm of riff and heavy fuzz haze. He gathered up friends Oak Munson, Jessica Senteno, Ryan Rapsys, and Nate Ryan to fill out a vision residing somewhere between the distinctly traditional and the weirdly unknown. “Old Testament is a full manifestation of the depth of Jason’s personal musical journey and is like the dark side of Dead Meadow’s moon, where with a five-member ensemble of some of Los Angeles’ most seasoned young musicians playing a plethora of unlikely instruments, I witnessed and heard a full-on throwback and ode to folk/bluegrass influences from as early as the 1940’s to the ’70s.”

“The elements of Appalachian folk music and postmodern neo psych rock make the band tonally unique. There’s something to be said about Simon breaking from the 15-year consistency of putting his main efforts into Dead Meadow, and now going out and creating music that no one is doing in L.A. with Old Testament.”

Matthew Collings is a Scotland-based composer. Not just a solo recording and live artist, he collaborates regularly with artists from all kinds of fields including musicians Dag Rosenqvist from Jasper, TX and Denovali labelmate Talvihorros. He’s responsible for several installations using custom-made software, which have been exhibited at Burning Man Festival in San Francisco and Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts. His work for films includes a specially commissioned live score for Dziga Vertov’s 1929 silent classic, The Man with the Movie Camera, and an invitation to work on The Invisibles, a commission from Amnesty International. Collings’ gentle, blurred singing voice is added as a melodic instrument, which never dominates, but soaks through a composition, seemingly distorted through its state of constant shift. Strongly influenced by avant-garde guitar music, it calls to mind the minimal music of Steve Reich or Gavin Bryars. Alongside Matthew Collings’ debut album, Denovali Records is proud to offer his new full-length, entitled Silence is a Rhythm Too. The title of the record goes back to a line from a 1980s punk/new wave song by The Slits called “In the Beginning There Was Rhythm,” although Collings was mostly preoccupied with painter Mark Rothko while creating the album. Following Rothko’s statement that the only things worth making art about were romance, tragedy, and death, Collings condensed and transferred this thought to the antithesis of life and death represented by noise and silence.

Prude is a vicious agglomeration of disparate talents, fronted by legendary conceptual terrorist Jared Louche from seminal machine rock band Chemlab. Industrial agitator Matt Fanale from Caustic brings blistering noise, whitelight guitar star Marc Olivier from London’s Plastic Heroes is the essence of rock ‘n’ roll, electronics guru Phil DiSiena (Infocollapse/Cyanotic) provides sleazy grooves, and producer supreme Howie Beno (13mg/Ministry/Blondie/DM) weaves it all into a merciless Molotov. Prude’s debut album is a wild, acid-tripped puree of 1970s New York punk and glam retrofitted with a harsh, damaged electronic edge. Sequential Access is an old-school EBM collaboration between Marco Defcode (Decoded Feedback) and Claus Larsen (Leæther Strip, Klutæ). Fittingly titled Sex Addicts Anonymous, the result is 13 tracks of pure golden-era electro-industrial. Percussive dance rhythms and arpeggiation are overlaid with catchy lyrics and melodies, as Sex Addicts Anonymous finds Marco and Claus cranking out a brand of EBM that stomps one foot in the present, and one in the halcyon days of the old-school European EBM movement of the ’80s and ’90s.

There’s dark, and then there’s what Isolator create: an abyssal black hole fashioned from pure negativity and concentrated misanthropy, the sounds unraveling like a time-lapse film of slow decay and rot, where cascading, shapeless drones meet charred orchestral swells, disembodied voices, ritual undertones, and blown-out disharmonics, all smeared into a mass of roiling darkness. This is harrowing and bleak to an endless degree, taking desolation and hopelessness to new levels. Featuring members of Father Befouled/Encoffination and Set, the five extended tracks signify a vital new entry in the “black noise” genre, fitting comfortably amidst its Black Plague brethren DEATHSTENCH and Hypsiphrone.

A dazzling, forceful slab of propulsive art-rock invention. Hand-screened folder designed by the legendary Designer’s Republic. Limited quantity available on colored vinyl (transparent yellow wax). Publicity by Solid PR, with a focus on track premieres, album streams, radio promotion, and feature articles. • Mega-tour through the U.S. from August through September. • RIYL: Don Caballero, Noxagt, Shellac, Jesus Lizard, Botch, Fugazi.

New Atlantis Records is incredibly pleased to announce Treffpunkt, the latest LP from polyrhythmic avant-punks U SCO. Consisting of members from several other notable, genre-bending, Portland-bred projects — including the Jezebel Spirit, With Eyes Abstract, and Duck, Little Brother, Duck! — U SCO has been an electrifying, formidable staple of Portland’s unparalleled punk scene since their formation in 2011. Dissonant, propulsive, and pan-tonal, this is monolithic art rock, triumphant its raw, discomforting sonic catharsis.

Hand silk-screened folder/poster! Remix by the massively influential Doug Scharin (June of 44/Codeine). Limited quantities of transparent red vinyl available. Mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Studio. Press and publicity by Solid PR. RIYL: June of 44, Hoover, Fugazi, Shellac, Orthrelm, Albert Ayler.

In the midst of writing their second LP, avant rock trio Hyrrokkin re-recorded three of their earliest pieces with engineer Jason LaFarge (Swans, Devendra Banhart) at Seizures Palace in Brooklyn. A celebration of the band’s inception — vital days marked by endless of hours of practice and pontification, with at least one member living in the practice space — the group invited friends to remix and re-compose the three pieces. To cap off the project, New Atlantis Records will release the music as 7” singles, with the remixes on the B-side. Sephfus, the first release of the series, is a dynamic piece with an electric backbone, marrying odd-time signatures to free-time, scattershot bursts of searing improvisation. On the flipside is a reinterpretation of the piece by the mighty percussionist Doug Scharin under the Activities of Dust moniker. SIDE A: Sephfus • SIDE B: Same Size in the Sky (Sephfus Remix) Key Markets: Hometown: Dayton. Also: Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York, Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago
