there is a presence within the ancient piazza that is resistant to change.

erspective/east ater elements, structural, ming, entry

soul (r)evolution aims to contain the rich soul of the city within the piazza and protest against this resistance by breaking its facade and allowing the rich character of genoa to infiltrate the building.

the building contains a series of four transverse walls, which represent the building’s resistance to change.

through these four walls exists a crack, which creates an eroded, winding canyon composed purely out of glass brick and steel,

efficiency apartments on the upper five floors combined with commercial functions on the bottom two floors are energized through the circulation happening within the canyon. screens reflect light within the canyon, creating a hidden gem of activity just behind the piazza.

REACH

ANDERSON STATION TICKETS

reach, the anderson train station, is an aim to connect the city of anderson with surrounding cities through a new rail line. the station aims at exposing tourists to the rich culture of upstate south carolina.

the circulation happens along a main corridor following the narrow site and again on the circulation tower perpendicular to the site. the tower adds prominence and signage to the building while constantly exposing patrons to the upstate south carolina cultural exhibits intended to be displayed on the second floor.

the astrocube is a theater and theater education building located on the site of downtown clemson’s old astro theater. the building stays within the original footprint and utilizes some of the old building’s walls and decor.

the astro cube serves as the paragon for modern theater education, stressing the importance of in class application by providing immediate adjacencies between classrooms and various theater spaces.

the mechanomorphic nature of the building simultaneously provides opportunities for creativity and limitations for innovation: both active constraints for learning to develop good design.

the theater’s floor is constructed from several panels on hydraulic pistons, allowing various arrangements, while the classroom tower features pop-out panels to expand space and create private dressing rooms during show time.

the site abuts two city parks along the west and south sides. a fragmented topographical intervention creates gathering spaces and connects the two parks, continuing the entertainment corridor from the downtown area. the lobby wall opens completely, creating the opportunity for alternative performance areas.

an emphasis is placed upon the building’s fluidity in construction, using the adaptable module of theater flyhouses and applying it to the entire design.

COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUS

nearly every commuter student passes through this stretch of campus daily.

slow track/inner gathering spaces

permeable pavement

the renovation of this street aims to create a major communication and gathering area for maintenance of existing trees students on their way to classes.

bike storage

fast track/outer sidewalks

ambient information: information received without any apparent cognitive recognition.

the building mimics the ancient agora or forum; however, the marble is replaced with steel and LED lighting that changes colors due to specific on-campus events. when the passers-by see the color changing, they realize something is happening and will be apt to look at the screens placed within the frieze, which show news events, time, or even twitter updates.

Allender Stewart Clemson University ‘11

My intent to continue my education in architecture is rooted in the influence of these two forces: first, to explore the juxtaposition of rigid functionality and artistic experience; second, to achieve this through meticulous attention to detail in craft and construction.

Second, my education and research have turned me towards an interest in the experiential quality of the design. Corbusier believed “the house is a machine for living,” which is true for practicality in function; however, the artistic quality that can be found within that practicality is what can make something truely beautiful.

First, the force that I grew up within. The extreme passion to create, to build. Living within a renovation growing up has influenced my interest in handiwork and craft, as well as my attention to practicality with reference to the behavior of people within a space.

Two forces define my architectural interest, which have been found through both my education and research and my upbringing and life experience.

INTENT.
