Greetings Allen Edmonds Friends – The verdict is in! After 25+ years of Euro-leanings and “anything goes” casual shoes, the tide has turned and great American heritage styling is definitely back – not just here, but around the globe. Also back is a renewed appreciation for high quality leathers, construction and detailing in men’s footwear. Men are wearing much better shoes both to work (no matter how casual the dress code) and on the weekends with their khakis and jeans. In addition to the fashion magazines, such earnest publications as The New York Times and Bloomberg Businessweek have written about the turn in the prevailing winds. Even the European shoe companies, in the sincerest form of flattery, have switched in their new offerings from traditional long toes to American-styled round-toe wingtips for women as well as men.

As you can imagine, we’re especially glad to see these trends at Allen Edmonds. Business is booming and we’ve added over 100 production teammates since January 2010, a more than 35% growth in manufacturing employment. American manufacturing is making a comeback and we’re part of it. I’m writing this letter on the plane back from Shanghai, where we’ve signed a partnership agreement to bring our Made in USA Allen Edmonds shoes to China. A stop in Seoul on the way home and a trip to India also evidence the growing global demand for American-manufactured product and truly authentic American styling. Eric Wilson’s article about American-made shoes in the April issue of The New York Times was especially good, and it featured several photos of our workers. If you haven’t seen it, scan the Tag to the left using your smartphone to read the article online. At Allen Edmonds we’ve reconfigured and strengthened our product design team, merging decades of shoemaker and leather experience with senior headto-toe men’s fashion expertise plus a youthful perspective. Their work together is in clear evidence in this catalog. Our new Rough Collection combines classic American patterns with more rustic leathers and natural sidewall treatments. The trendsetting McTavish, Elgin and Lubbock, which we introduced early, have quickly become three of our bestsellers and men are wearing them with jeans as well as suits. Boots have also made a comeback in both dress and casual wear. We have boots in multiple leathers and constructions, from the cool walnut calfskin of the welted Dalton to the outdoorsy new Cascade welt in cowhide and the tactile bison of the handsewn Yuma. We’ve also brought out renewed traditional AE looks for this fall. The Sanford, Hillcrest and Bradley have been reintroduced in our Timeless Classics line-up. The new Kenilworth and Norwich show the elegance of an expertly burnished plain toe. We’ve also developed a brand new, high-end line called the Independence Collection, which combines almost glove-soft calfskin leathers with a new stylized sole and lambskin linings for incredible comfort and a top-end impression. The Independence Collection celebrates our perseverance as one of the only U.S. shoe manufacturers, with each shoe named after a signer of the Declaration of Independence. You’ll want to check these out. And please don’t forget coordinating Allen Edmonds belts – our design team has also upgraded our effort in that department. The new premium quality Manistee goes terrifically with our brogue shoes and has become a favorite among our more discerning customers. The Allen Edmonds Classic Collection provides the shoes a man needs for his daily professional wardrobe. This fall, we’re introducing the Independence Collection, which features the finest aged calfskin leather for an ultra-soft feel, with special attention paid to the details. These shoes are named after the signers of the Declaration of Independence to reflect their American heritage. You’ll also find a selection of other new styles throughout the Classic Collection that are perfect for filling out your fall wardrobe.

MAN

As a New York City resident since 2003, I have made a career from a desire to advance the tradition of straight-ahead jazz baritone saxophone. Always endeavoring to appreciate and incorporate the whole of African-American music, my presentation combines elements of soul, R&B and funk with jazz music. As a professional musician, I am always on stage. As a New Yorker, I walk almost everywhere. It’s important for me to look good and feel good as sets on my feet can get pretty long. I discovered Allen Edmonds 4 or 5 years ago and they are my shoe of choice. Currently, my collection consists of 6 pairs, and I have the intentions of growing that portfolio by many more this coming year. My favorite look is a monk strap as well as classic favorites, which include the Park Avenue, Kendall, Bayfield and San Marco. I am currently playing at the following venues in New York City: Jazz Standard, Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space and Birdland. In addition, my current band “The Jason Marshall Organ Trio” is preparing to release its first album entitled “Sign the Book.” Learn more about my music at jasonmarshalljazz.com.

construction The shoes in the Allen Edmonds Classic Collection* have been constructed by hand using our famous 212-step 360° Goodyear welt construction process. There are many types and qualities of leather available, but we proudly source only the finest quality leathers. Allen Edmonds Player’s Shoe in Snuff Suede calfskin leather has tighter pores than most competitive with Player’s Belt leathers. Thus, the shoes hold a shine in Snuff Suede better and are more durable. A layer of cork under the insole forms to your foot over time, providing a custom, orthotic-like fit. The more you wear your Allen Edmonds shoes, the better they form to your feet. We call this “custom cork comfort.” Allen Edmonds is the largest cobbler in the world, and we perform all Recrafting® services in our Port Washington, Wisconsin facility where many of our Classic shoes were first handcrafted. The shoes are flawlessly built with 360º Goodyear welt construction and full-grain aged calfskin leather for an extraordinarily supple feel. The two-toned sole features an all-leather heel base, brass nails on the heel and a brass nameplate with vintage Allen Edmonds logo script. The line is made in the U.S.A. and represents one of the finest collections from Allen Edmonds, aptly named after the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In addition to our large size and width offering, our shoes are constructed on a number of different lasts, each of which have slightly different shapes which lead to differing fit characteristics so it’s easy for a man to find a last that fits his specific foot shape for everlasting comfort. In 2010, Allen Edmonds participated in a Suits for Soldiers Event with custom clothier Hunter & Lords. The idea was to help veterans outfit themselves for re-entry into the workforce. Here is a thank you from Daniel Grime, Army, 2nd Battalion 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment 82nd Airborne Division, Sergeant: “I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your efforts with regards to Suits & Shoes for Soldiers. I know you said not to say thank you, but I want you to know how much I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule and also using your skills to do something good for service members. Personally, I don’t expect a single person to even say thank you to me for my service. I simply view it as something I had to do and something I wanted to do; I just did my job. However, you have managed to go above and beyond anything I ever imagined anyone would do for me as a show of gratitude. After seeing what you’ve done for service members, I am convinced that a person doesn’t have to wear a camouflage uniform to be counted among the ranks of great Americans. I never imagined someone would do something for me like you have. I am truly humbled, and I would like to not only thank you for the great shoes you have made for me but also for being a great American company who truly supports our troops with not only your words, but more importantly with your actions.”

Cordovan Care Tip Cordovan leather requires different care than calfskin due to its different properties. To remove any natural oils or residue in areas where the shoe flexes, and to maintain the leather’s quality, simply brush the leather with a horsehair shine brush or wipe with a cotton flannel polishing cloth. Polish occasionally with Allen Edmonds Cordovan Care Cream to protect the leather and maintain its rich color.

About a minute or so into Bob Moore’s flight home from a business trip in New York, he heard a loud bang come from one side of the plane. The plane began to shake, then all the mechanics shut down, creating an eerie silence. Suddenly he heard the pilot’s voice over the PA, “Brace for impact,” then the flight attendants began to chant, “Bend and brace. Bend and brace.” Even though he was preparing for the worst, a calm came over him as he prayed for himself, his wife, children and grandchildren. After the impact, Mr. Moore looked around and realized he had survived without much more than a few scratches and bruises. Immediately, the plane’s doors were opened and water began to seep down the aisle of the plane. By the time he got to the wing, the water was up to the top of his favorite pair of Allen Edmonds shoes. By the time the ferry arrived, he was up to his waist in the frigid Hudson River. Despite the ordeal he had been through, when he returned home, Mr. Moore found himself thinking about his ruined Allen Edmonds shoes and how disappointed he was that he could no longer wear his favorite pair; a true testament to his loyalty and passion for Allen Edmonds.

Skilled artisans sew the vamp to the upper and the kicker by hand, ensuring the two pieces of leather are aligned and sewn correctly to create the perfect fit. This process takes more time and requires more effort, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the right way to make a handsewn shoe, so thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how we do it at Allen Edmonds. The handsewns featured in the Casual Collection use a tubular moc construction. This technique allows the lower leather to be pulled up around the last and stitched to the upper leather, resulting in an extremely comfortable and flexible shoe. Made in the U.S.A., with the exception of the Yuma, most of our Rough shoes can be put through our Recrafting service. The shoes feature waxy distressed leather, double oak leather soles or rugged rubber soles, and classic American styling that is experiencing a resurrection in the men’s fashion industry. Similar to the pre-washed, “worn-in” denim trend, drying machines are used to tumble the leathers and give them a soft, distressed look. To restore the natural oils and ensure durability, we condition the leather with natural tallow and waxes. Paired with casual clothing, these styles give off a fresh, young vibe for the modern urban man.

Michael D. Miller My father was in the retail business with Mercantile Stores for 40 years. He owned 16 chains of department stores across America. About 10 years ago, they were bought out by another major chain.

Not only did I watch my father wear, shine, and have his shoes recrafted, they were a symbol of pride everywhere he walked. He also taught me discipline and pride in taking care of my belongings. Every Wednesday and Saturday, I watched my father take his shoes downstairs to shine. My father always told me he could tell the kind of man you were by the way you took care of your shoes. I was especially pleased that Allen Edmonds brought back the McAllister from the Timeless Classics Collection, which reminds me so much of my father every time I put them on. In my 25 years of professional life, I have only worn Allen Edmonds shoes. Tim McGuire just recently became an AE Man. Last summer he needed to find an attractive, comfortable pair of dress shoes to wear with his tux for his daughter’s wedding. As the General Manager of a classic private golf club, I try to set an example of professionalism. Our members really appreciate the club as a place to relax, socialize and entertain guests. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why in 2009 I requested custom cedar shoe trees for our locker rooms. We put our club logo on the cedar shoe trees and had the memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name and locker number engraved on the trees. Not only is this a very professional look, but the locker room attendants appreciated that they could easily match the golf shoes to the member. I have to admit, the cedar shoe trees provided a terrific fragrance as well. In 2010 I went a step further and had my key coworkers travel to the Allen Edmonds factory to get fitted for dress shoes. Our folks are on their feet most of the day and I want them look great and feel great. I am very appreciative of the Allen Edmonds Master shoe fitting service and cedar innovation they developed for us.

To maintain a professional appearance, men should always wear a genuine leather belt to the office.

Every man should have at least two belts in his collection: a basic black leather belt and a basic brown leather belt. A black belt should be worn with black shoes and a brown belt paired with brown shoes. Under no circumstances should a brown belt be paired with black shoes, or vice versa. To look even more fashionable, belt colors and patterns should coordinate with shoe colors and patterns. To determine belt size, simply go up one or two sizes from the waist size of your pants. The tail of the belt should easily pass through the first belt loop on your pants, but it should not extend too far past the belt loop. 40

Allen Edmonds shoes are so well-made that we can actually return them to like-new condition with our exclusive Recrafting process. Recrafting is far more than simple shoe repair. Using the original manufacturing process, we literally rebuild worn footwear from the bottom up. With six packages to choose from, Recrafting is the perfect way to give new life to old shoes. All of the styles in our Italian Collection can now go through our exclusive Recrafting service. Due to the construction methods and materials used, some modifications are required in the Recrafting of Italian shoes. Prestige Package – Our Prestige Package is a complete restoration. We begin by replacing soles, heels, welting, cork footbeds and laces. Next, we completely refinish the uppers, hand-polishing the leather to a vibrant glow. Finally, we add aromatic cedar shoe trees, place shoes in protective shoe bags and include a Premium Polish. The results are nothing short of remarkable. 757 Prestige Package Standard Package – Standard Recrafting is identical to our Prestige Package. Shoes are completely refurbished and the results are equally impressive. 180,000! That’s a big number, and it’s the average number of calls any one of our fantastic customer service representatives has fielded during their tenure to date. The customer service team is based in our Port Washington, Wisconsin headquarters and they service wholesale account needs as well as consumer needs. Over the years I have bought, and now only own, Allen Edmonds shoes. From the very beginning, I thought they were the best, and now, after so many years, I still feel the same. When I recently received my pair of recrafted Allen Edmonds shoes, I was thrilled with them as they looked absolutely brand new. I must admit that before I sent them to the factory, they looked so shoddy (from long-time wear and tear, not from their original production) that I only wore them around the house rather than publicly at work. I figured I had nothing to lose by sending them in for Recrafting. I was amazed to see how my shoes turned out and am very pleased with the results. I have just one small criticism: Allen Edmonds uses the motto, “The Great American Shoe Company.” I think this is clearly inaccurate. You should change it to, “Allen Edmonds: The GREATEST American Company.”

The best way to enhance the lasting quality of Allen Edmonds shoes is with proper care. Here is everything you need to protect and maintain your shoes for longwearing comfort. Aniline Calf, Gala Silk Calf, Eversnow Calf, Antibes Calf, Rodanil Calf, Calfskin & Soft Calf

Use Allen Edmonds Conditioner/Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Shoe Cream or Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry. Remove excess polish by brushing with a horsehair shine brush and buff to a desired shine. Burnished Calfskin

To remove the slight haze you may notice with a new pair of burnished calfskin shoes, wipe them with a soft cloth or brush with a horsehair shine brush. Clean regularly with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry. Then, using a soft cloth, apply a medium coat of Allen Edmonds Shoe Polish in the appropriate color and allow to air dry. Brush with a horsehair shine brush to remove excess polish and buff using a soft, cotton flannel cloth. Nappa Leather

Apply Allen Edmonds Conditioner/Cleaner to remove any residue and to restore leather’s natural softness and durability. To achieve maximum shine, polish with Allen Edmonds Shoe Cream or Polish in a matching color and allow to air dry. Remove excess polish and wax by brushing w ith a horsehair shine brush, then buff to a desired finish. Shell Cordovan

To remove any residue in areas where the shoe flexes, and to maintain the leather’s quality, simply brush cordovan footwear with a horsehair shine brush or wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Polish occasionally with Allen Edmonds Cordovan Care Cream to maintain a rich color. Chromexcel, Floodlight & Saddlehorn Leathers

Apply Allen Edmonds Aqua-Care Shoe Cream using a soft cloth and allow to air dry. The leather is lightened or darkened according to wear. If shoe has contrast stitching, Leather Lotion is recommended. Recommended Products Aqua-Care Shoe Cream Leather Lotion

Waxed & Grain Leathers

Waxed, glove and grain leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Using a soft cloth, apply Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion, which has been specially formulated for these leathers. Allow shoes to completely air dry. Buff waxed leathers gently with a soft cloth to bring out their shine. Recommended Products Leather Lotion Cotton Flannel Polishing Cloth

Suede & Nubuck

For everyday care, use the Allen Edmonds Suede Combo Brush for spot-treating and detailing. For maximum water protection, apply Allen Edmonds Spray Waterproofer. Recommended Products Suede & Nubuck Cleaning System Spray Waterproofer

Patent Leather

Goodyear Welted Styles - There are 10 different lasts used to manufacture our current welted footwear, or those styles designated by a four-digit number. The last number is the same as the styleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final digit.

8 Last Modeled after the 4 last, but with more depth to accommodate the removable orthotic. (Ashton and Benton only)

0 Last (000) A more pronounced cone and elongated forepart with a subtly clipped toe create a sleek silhouette.

4 Last (234) Similar to the 7 last with a slightly more squared toe.

1 Last (511) Similar to the 7 last from heel to ball; more rounded, fuller fitting toe.

2 Last (222) Elongated toe with a slightly higher instep. Very similar to the 108 last.

5 Last (65) Longest in length of our lasts; best for a long, narrow foot.

9 Last (79) Tapered back portion pushes the foot forward to fit low across the top of the foot rather than the instep.

8 Last (108) Elongated forepart with a tapered and flatter toe; similar to the 2 last.

7 Last (97) Best fit for the average foot; lays flatter in the toe area.

3 Last (73) Wider across the ball of the foot with more room over the instep.

Handsewn Styles - Handsewn styles are constructed on one of six current lasts. Look below to find the characteristics of each last.

1258 Last More tapered forepart and squared toe.

2592 Last A round, fuller toe handsewn. Accommodates a full sock liner with heel-to-toe padding.

555 Last Shorter forepart and round toe with a tighter instep; snug fit.

145 Last Tapered, square toe handsewn last with an elongated forepart; fuller fitting.

800 Last A classic handsewn last with a semirounded toe and roomier instep; longer forepart than the 555.

114 Last Slightly shorter vamp with more rounded toe.

Cement Flat-Lasted Styles - Styles in the ae by Allen Edmonds Dress Collection are constructed on the 444 last, a specially-designed last used in the cement flat-lasting construction process. 444 Last Similar to the 4 last, the 444 last has a slightly squared toe and lays flatter in the toe area; a great fit for the average foot.
