If you ask 100 Allen residents what they love about this city, you’re likely to get 100 different answers. For some, it’s the awardwinning parks and trails system that allows them to enjoy Allen’s natural beauty. For others, it’s the world of new ideas contained inside the volumes (and programs) of Allen Public Library. Some may cite the Ken Fulk, Mayor thoughtful and proactive planning CITY OF ALLEN that keeps Allen’s economy thriving and its infrastructure in top shape. Others might mention the wide range of City services that make everyday life a little easier. For me, it all comes down to the people. I’m delighted to serve such a diverse and vibrant group of residents who each bring their own unique ideas and perspectives to our community. It’s one of the reasons I’m such a big proponent of community engagement and volunteering — I truly believe that Allen is stronger together! Whether you are brand new to our community or have lived here many decades, you’ll find some ideas for getting involved in Allen in Focus, located at the back of this publication. From applying to serve on a City board or commission, voting in an upcoming election or even joining our team of skilled City employees, I hope this issue inspires you to connect with your community in new ways.

US-75 ENTRY TAKES SHAPE Work on the Allen Drive gateway project gets underway this spring, creating a landmark entry to the City of Allen at US75 and Allen Drive. The intersection was identified as a local priority by Allen City Council in 2018 in advance of growing traffic volumes, increased pedestrian use and expectations for future development in downtown Allen. When completed, new roundabouts on either side of the highway will enhance traffic flow for the foreseeable future and create a safer path for pedestrians. Decorative fencing and landscaping may be added later using $500,000 in state funding awarded to Keep Allen Beautiful for a city beautification project.

SUMMER WATER CONSERVATION
TIPS FOR MONTHLY SAVINGS As we enter the warmer months, conserving water becomes more important than ever! You can save water (and money) by applying some of these conservation tips in your own yard.
MARCH Choose native and adapted plants when replanting beds or containers. These plants thrive best in our area and will grow more successfully.
MAY May is typically the wettest month in Allen. If you can't tell if your lawn needs water, slide a long screwdriver into the soil. If it slides easily, there is no need to water yet.
JULY Rolling blackouts and summer storms can cause your irrigation controller to lose power. If this happens, check the system to verify the run schedule wasn't reset.
APRIL Check for broken heads, leaks and unexpected controller settings before turning on your irrigation system for the season. Not ready to DIY? Hire a licensed irrigator to help.
JUNE For a healthier and greener lawn, mow at the highest recommended level for your grass variety. Not sure what kind of grass you have? Visit AggieTurf.TAMU.edu for guidance.
AUGUST August can be Allen's hottest month. SMART irrigation controllers use more water to compensate for hot and dry conditions. Water between midnight and 6 a.m. to reduce water lost from evaporation.
