GOALS WE ARE SUPPORTING THROUGH THIS INITIATIVE
CLASS VISITS OF LEARNERS TO TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM
SCHOOL CURRICULUM-ALIGNED LESSONS ARE SUITABLE FOR ALL AGES
EDUCATIONAL PUPPET SHOWS FOR GRADES R-3
DISCOVERY CENTRE LESSONS FOR GRADES 1-12 WITH A SELECTION OF FUN
The Discovery Centre classrooms at the Two Oceans Aquarium are places of exploration and learning. School groups that visit the Aquarium spend time in our Discovery Centres, learning about a variety of ocean-related topics Qualified teachers specialising in ocean education are able to teach children, and adults, of various ages
A number of exciting lessons are available to choose from, with school curriculum-aligned themes
Lessons to choose from (Grades 1-3)
The following lessons are available to book either online or as an off-site lesson
Life in Rock Pools: We look at the variety of animals we find in our rockpools. We then discuss their structures and their adaptability to their surrounding environment We also learn about the effects of pollution on our marine animals
Fish: Do fish have the same senses as us? How are they able to live in water? We also look at some strange fish eg lionfish, pipefish, and sea horses as examples
Sharks (Grades 2 & 3): This fun lesson focuses on the most misunderstood animal of the ocean: the shark The learners are taught about the structure of this animal, its feeding patterns, and any fun facts about sharks
Lessons to choose from (Grades 7-9)
The following lessons are available to book either online or as an off-site lesson.
Basic Biodiversity: The lesson introduces the two oceans around South Africa and some of the ecosystems in the Aquarium This is followed by a study of some rock pool animals to establish their life processes, how tides affect them, principles of classification, and general biodiversity
Marine sustainability: The lesson introduces three themes critical to South Africa and the management of healthy coasts and marine resources These themes are biodiversity, HIPPO, seafood sustainability, and marine and coastal pollution
Rocky shore ecology: This lesson introduces typical South African rocky shores in terms of tides, abiotic and biotic factors affecting the distribution of seaweeds and animals, zonation patterns and the organisms that can be encountered in these habitats A variety of intertidal animals and seaweeds are referred to in this lesson
Sharks: This topic explores the history of sharks as members of the fish family, studies their adaptations to their marine environment (shape, fins, gills, skin, senses) and highlights shocking shark population stats and need for shark conservation
Fish: How do we know that an animal is a fish? Focusing on bony fish as a group of fish we look at their key characteristics eg fins, gills, streamlined shape etc. We also explore the importance of fish as a source of food and the importance of conserving them.

Free Visits to under-resourced schools around Cape Town
Cape Town is a city surrounded by beautiful biodiversity, abundant oceans, and readily accessible nature. But, it is also a growing city that faces the challenges of fulfilling the human needs of energy provision, clean drinking water, and waste disposal. Bringing these human and natural worlds together in a sustainable way takes what we call "Smart Living" - and in partnership with DHL we're bringing free sustainability outreach lessons to schools throughout that area.
Smart Living is a mobile lesson, presented by outreach teacher Anzio Abels, designed for Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners. All lessons are CAPS-curriculum aligned, with a selection of themes: Biodiversity, energy, water, and waste. Teacher Anzio uses interactive, tech-savvy lessons to engage learners and communicate even the most complex concepts in fun, informative ways! To book, simply complete the online booking form on our Foundation's website here, or email schools@aquariumfoundation.org.z
The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation's outreach programmes are offered for free to under-resourced schools around Cape Town, thanks to our generous partners like DHL, and for a small fee to schools that have the capacity. Chat to your child's teachers about this opportunity!
Our teachers are able to accommodate classes of up to 40 learners, for a maximum of 200 children a day (but we are happy to make multiple visits to the same school if you have a particularly big group).

#9 EMPLOYEES 6
So let’s focus on the legal nitty gritty WFH has brought to the table – over and above the issues mentioned in my previous article, the following must be addressed contractually i e part and parcel of the employment or independent contractor agreement:
A monitoring policy needs to be drafted, implemented & included in the employee training agenda
As with ‘processing’ in terms of POPI as discussed in previous articles (i.e. ‘collect, disseminate or merge ’ including ‘receipt, collect, record, collate’) it should be explained to the employees what type of processing and monitoring will be implemented, when and how This must form part of the implementation of RICA (The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provisions of Communication-related Information Act, Act 70 of 2002), ECTA (Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, Act 25 of 2002) & POPI training as well as the employment contract and aspects of consent and the ‘unique’ elements & requirements to work successfully from home!

DISCLAIMER - Each case depends on its own facts & merits - the above does not constitute advice - independent advice should be obtained in all instances
Given the domestic environment involved, privacy and confidentiality are paramount The POPI security requirements need to be extended & implemented regarding each WFH setting i.e. ‘Identify ‘all reasonably foreseeable internal & external risks and establish and maintain safeguards against such risks’ & the best way would be to carry out an impact assessment at each location ... the cost may be worth it!
As discussed employee mental health must be on the agenda and you should involve your human resources department or in lieu thereof, a specialist consultant.
I trust the very broad guidelines I’ve provided on the very important employment aspect of POPI over the last year have been useful – if you are interested I have a template that covers all these guidelines that you can simply attach to your current employment or independent contractor agreements as an addendum
