IDEAL CITY
70s
Gellerup is the ideal city. The functional settings are designed for the middle class Danish family, and architecturally the area continues the modernist thought of creating great, final and orthogonal building complexes. These types of “top down” and “ready made” designed cities are characterized as big industrial machineries, where people systematically and statistically live their average everyday life. If Gellerup was inhabited by one specific group of people, as the architects would predict, the area might work as an ideal city. Unfortunately the reality is different. Since the beginning of the 90s, immigrants and foreign workers have constituted the majority of the inhabitants in Gellerup and every since more ethnical groups and communities have inhabited the area. The tendency has created a lot of social problems as well as a bad reputation. While trying to understand the reality of Gellerup, the architecture must confront the artificial and UTOPIAN IDEA OF AN IDEAL CITY, and work with a masterplan in relation to human diversity regarding different cultural behaviour. This assignment is create a “bottom up” strategy that embraces the people living in Gellerup now.

CREATING A
MONSTER The area is involved with many very different cultures even with groups of smaller cultural subdivisions. This amount of different cultural routines and morals results in an extremely diverse pack of people living in the same area. The vision is to translate diversity into architectural principles and investigate what defines a dynamic space. This architectural monster is defined as a hybrid building that contains multiple uses and overlapping functions. We find it interesting to create architecture where hierarchy, complexity and diversity are already facing each other. These existing elements will work as formative guidelines to generate dynamic spaces in which mixed functions are showing the diversity of the surroundings. It is important to work against the idea of a superblock and the separation of functions. Instead of working with Gellerup as a whole, the assignment is focusing on smaller areas confronted with existing intersections. When designing a building of both private and public zones in a specific small area containing complexities, it is essential to investigate how all elements would create an overall harmony. Therefore old wooden joinery is used as an instrument of designing and as a catalogue of understanding connections between different elements. Joinery as details have interesting ways of describing dependence, systems, logic and forces that work together as a complexity. The strategy is to flip the original thought of a “top-down” ideal city into a “bottom up” strategy that involves overlapping functions. Gellerup needs to be more dense with hybrid buildings that fit into the smaller complex situations. The strategy will include different ways of understanding how characteristics of joinery will fit into certain areas in Gellerup, and how intersections will generate a specific program that relates to the surroundings. The designs will have an effect on the whole area of Gellerup when being placed. Over time new patterns, passages and complexities will be shaped and these changes will play an important role in the designing of the next joined building. We require the future designers and architects to investigate how one given joining system can be translated into a concept of a hybrid building, when having in mind that the dynamic complexities existing on site must be incorporated. Our strategy on how to densify Gellerup will embrace different aesthetics and architectural translations. The area will naturally grow denser in a steady pace and in time new shapes, materials and public functions will confront the original ideal structure with dynamic expressions showing the diversity within Gellerup. All buildings will have a relation to the existing reality that are facing now, but also in the future.

SCRUPULĂ˜US.DK was a one week research consultancy workshop focussing on improving knowledge about office spaces. The workshop was a start up workshop for the master students. I volunteered organizing the signages and a Nespresso installation and later on attended. My responsibility was to connect conceptual thinking to practical organization and making. “I will challenge the neoclassicism own logic and closedness. I will test its symmetrical and harmonious proportions, and I will experiment with its simplicity and pure form. I want to create spaces that arise from the INTUITIVE, and create structure, surfaces and VOLUMES. My approach to the task will be based on the rigidity and neoclassicism own logic, which is then broken by the DYNAMIC and bulky. My extension will tickle the existing, without being too dominant. My desire is to add something that stands out, but at the same time not overshadow the present. My goal is to create a FUSION, and a balance between them, so it all comes together in a harmonious unit. manifesto unit A 2014

THEREFORE HERE IS POTENTIAL TO DESIGN A VACATION AREA FOR ADULT SINGLES!
41
42
PRIVATE The vacation houses calm down on visitors and they draw attention to relaxation and contemplation. We
want to create an environment for singles where the question of meeting a new partner is not the main goal. This vacation area is meant for people to share com-
mon interests that trend now; such as mountain biking or baking. The design vacation concept is designed
as 20 enclaves each containing 3 private units and a
set of public activities. The enclaves are all differently put down in terrain and personalized by the public
spaces they host. This way the visitors will be nudged to use other enclaves and meet new people.
