WELCOME to 1984! The New York Public Library recently celebrated its 125th anniversary and they released the titles of the 10 most checked out books in their history. The first two were children’s books, and then sitting at number three was George Orwell’s 1984. Orwell’s masterpiece has been an important novel throughout its life and remains a story relevant to our times. I remember when it actually was the year 1984 and there were plenty of news reports about how far off Orwell was in his predictions: the '80s world of neon leg-warmers, big hair, "greed is good" capitalism, excess, and individuality seemed far off from the totalitarian dystopia Orwell imagined. Now in 2020, every phone, computer, convenience store, and street corner has a camera. In our homes, Siri and Alexa listen in on our conversations and suggest products and feed us ads based on what we say in the privacy of our own homes. Now, we have the concepts of alternative facts and fake news and we can never be certain if a story is made-up or not. I would argue that Orwell's novel has a lot more to say to us in 2020 than it did in 1984. This play also brings an important passion of mine to the Alley: science fiction and the theatre. Long ago, movies and television won the battle for the proper medium of science fiction, but this wasn’t always the case. In fact, we get our word “robot” from Czech playwright Karel Čapek’s 1920 play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots). Frankenstein, after first being published as a novel in 1818, was almost immediately adapted into a stage play and has intrigued theatre audiences ever since. Caryl Churchill’s two person single-set 2002 play entitled A Number couldn’t be simpler from a production standpoint, but it remains the best exploration of the consequences of human cloning I have ever seen. And of course, many of you remember the Alley’s production of Jennifer Haley’s extraordinary examination of virtual reality, The Nether. Movies and T.V. excel at showing the technology and the spectacle of science fiction, but the theatre is better at exploring the ideas and the human consequences. I'm excited to present this wonderful adaptation by Michael Gene Sullivan, which was originally written for Tim Robbins' LA theatre company, The Actors' Gang. Sullivan imagines the entire play as a complex interrogation taking place here and now that we as audience witness. It really is here and now. Our set was inspired by the brutalist architecture of our building designed by Ulrich Franzen in an approach our set designer Michael Locher calls “retro-futurism.” So, from the moment you walk up the stairs from Texas Avenue into the building, you enter our world of 1984. Welcome!

MANAGING DIRECTOR Photo by Gittings
WELCOME to 1984. As we experience the world of George Orwell and his envisioned world of overseers, I would like to call your attention to a more positive group of overseers, our Board of Directors. This dedicated group of individuals and those that passed before them have taken the mantle of responsibility and shepherded the Alley Theatre for 73 years. They have guided the Alley from a small dance studio that doubled as a theatre in 1947 to one of our nation’s flagship theatre companies. The Alley is recognized as one of the founding members of the national theatre movement that saw the professionalization of small theatres into professional theatres in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The Alley has never rested on its laurels but has continued to innovate and support American writers throughout its history. During this time, it was the Board of Directors that ensured the vision of the artistic leadership and provided the financial resources to guarantee that the vision was realized. Our current Board is led by President Butch Mach. He, along with recent past presidents Jesse Marion and Roger Plank and their respective boards, have overseen the major renovation of the theatre and its recovery from the ravages of Hurricane Harvey. The Board of Directors is made up of community leaders who have a passion for the theatre and love the city of Houston. None has been more dedicated than our Chairman Emeritus Meredith Long who has provided outstanding leadership for several decades and continues as one of the Alley’s greatest supporters. The Board of Directors holds the Alley in trust for the entire community. The members give of their time, talent, and treasure to ensure that the Alley is meeting its mission and providing outstanding professional theatre for all Houstonians. Every year the Alley must raise $9 million in private funds in order for the theatre to produce more than 400 performances for the community. This group of Directors leads the way in financial support, but they certainly don’t do it alone. The Alley also depends on you, our patrons, to provide additional support beyond the cost of your ticket. So, on behalf of the entire Alley staff, we thank our Directors and patrons for your generosity and for keeping the Alley Theatre a national treasure for 73 years.

ORWELLIAN THEMES IN OUR WORLD
ORWELLIAN: A term inspired by the author of 1984, George Orwell. Often used when discussing totalitarian governments, propaganda, and public surveillance.
PERPETUAL WARFARE Perpetual warfare in 1984 meets a special set of criteria:
It's fought in a distant land Oceania is always winning and always on the verge of defeat The goal is to keep the people afraid and desperate In the United States, periods of war have outlasted periods of peace for several generations.
TECHNOLOGY Technology plays a big part in the world of 1984. George Orwell knew that new tech meant new ways to influence and control people. If he wrote his novel today, it would most definitely include cell phones and the internet. Cyberwarfare has changed the way governments and rebellions alike engage with friends or foes. Cyberwarfare is pervasive; it affects everything from phones to Facebook.

TOTALITARIANISM IN OUR WORLD
The essence of totalitarianism isn’t brute strength, it’s acceptance. Without the acceptance of the average citizen a dictatorial power has no one to join the secret police, the domestic spies, the oppressive army. Totalitarianism is made up of citizens who’ve accepted the destruction of their own civil rights in the name of order, and accepted that some powerful, unconquerable leader or junta is the only thing that can save them from disaster. There have been 10 totalitarian governments in our recent past:

"Without acceptance and the cooperation of enough of the citizens totalitarianism crumbles. And if, as in 1984, the citizens are willing to spy on their co-workers, their friends, their family members, and even themselves, if they are willing to accept that any deviation from fervent patriotism is treason, and to discard any ethics and even doubt reality before doubting the Leader - then the dictatorship is complete." -Michael Gene Sullivan, 1984 playwright

THE AUTHOR AND THE PLAYWRIGHT GEORGE ORWELL
“What I have most wanted to do... is to make political writing into an art.” –George Orwell Eric Arthur Blair was an English writer mostly known by his pen name, George Orwell. He lived in a tumultuous time (he was 30 when Hitler came to power), and the political climate greatly influenced his writing. Orwell was stationed in India as a colonial police officer during the rule of the British Empire. The experience made him extremely critical of the British government. He was openly a Democratic Socialist and was against the power held by the elite and the extremely wealthy. In his essay Why I Write, he explained, “Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism, and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.” He died at the age of 46, shortly after publishing 1984. In the decades since the year 1984 has come and gone, the novel 1984 has often been hailed as prophetic. Orwell was a pioneer for dystopian fiction, and like most dystopian novels, 1984 served as commentary and a warning about the state of the world at the time.
MICHAEL GENE SULLIVAN
“I want the audience to have a great time… then march out of the theatre and overthrow oppression.” -Michael Gene Sullivan 1984 playwright Michael Gene Sullivan has a long track record of creating art and articles that champion social and economic justice. His work resonates on a global scale - 1984 alone is available to produce in six languages. His passionate political engagement would no doubt have earned Orwell’s approval - or at least his respect. Orwell believed that political purpose was one of the four great motives for writing anything, and the one that most deserved to be followed. Michael Gene Sullivan’s adaption of 1984 has been produced nationally and internationally since its debut with film star Tim Robbins' company, The Actors' Gang, in 2006. Its long production history is a testament to the unyieldingly and terrifyingly relatable nature of the source material. 12
