INAUGURAL BULL SALE • MARCH 19, 2015
BURLINGTON LIVESTOCK EXCHANGE || BURLINGTON, COLORADO || 1:00 PM (MT)
ParkCerattle Co.
Welcome to the Sale Brett & Sally Parker 970-597-0831 Reed Parker 970-597-0832 parker_reed@hotmail.com 221 Vine St. Burlington, CO 80807
We want to welcome you to our inaugural bull sale. Finally, after some very tough years in the cattle business, we have a year of incredible prices. The future looks bright for the next several years. We would like to take this time to thank Denny Flock and the crew at Burlington Livestock for allowing us to bring this group of bulls to sell in a production sale. Also, wish to thank Marty Ropp and Garrett Thomas of Allied, and Cam Christensen for their advice and guidance. Last and not least we need to thank Sally. It takes a load of patience to develop a seed stock operation. Ten years ago we had the opportunity to acquire part of the Jim Taylor Simmental cow herd. Since that initial purchase we have added cows from some of the elite Simmental programs in the country along with raising our own. We have been selling bulls privately for most of those ten years. Two years ago we started an embryo program. Our results have been wonderful. We felt this year we have the quality to offer them in a production sale. We will have a total of 50 bulls, 20 18 month bulls and 30 yearling bulls. These are sons of NLC Upgrade, TNT E-Z-3, G W Comfort Zone, United, Parkers Service Hand, Brilliance, Bluestem, and Broken Bow. We feel this group of bulls are our best effort to date. Join us on March 19, 2015 at the Burlington Livestock Exchange in Burlington, Colorado. Performance and ultrasound information will be available on every bull. All bulls offered will have passed a fertility exam prior to the sale. Follow us on Facebook to learn more about our program and these bulls progress. Sincerely, The Parkers
Reed and Robbie
It is always exciting to be involved in firsts. The Parker family along with Allied Genetic Resources are happy to announce their very first production bull sale scheduled for March 19 at the Burlington Livestock Exchange in Burlington Colorado. Working with Reed, Brett and Sally Parker has been exciting for me personally as they build and grow a terrific seedstock operation with plans to make a long term impact on the SimGenetics business. Starting off right is the only way to do something that will last. With the purchase of some tremendous females and donor cows, the Parker’s will now offer the fruits of their program for the first time at auction. In addition to some great genetic packages among the yearling bull offering there is an added bonus of a large group of age advantaged fall yearling bulls for producers who like to use them but have a difficult time finding them regionally. You too will find bulls developed for use and longevity, not overfed bulls designed for the seller and not the buyer. It is a pleasure working with good folks like the Parkers everyday here at Allied. Please plan to be with us on the 19th to evaluate the production and quality their program has to offer. I am confident you will see the Parker’s working hard every day to earn both your business and your respect. Sincerely,
Marty Ropp

ABOUT THE BULLS
Tracy Harl 402-461-3575
The 18 month bulls were weaned last March. In May they were fed 120 days on a ration designed for them to gain 3lbs a day. From September to November they were on grass before being fed a moderate ration. They are very sound and ready to work hard this coming spring and summer. The 30 yearling bulls are the best group we have raised. They are moderate framed, deep and long bodied well-structured bulls. These bulls were weaned in September, and fed very moderately. We want them to be able to express their genetic potential without compromising their longevity.

Parker Cattle Co. This bull will be the first one we have ever offered at auction and boy is he good. He represents what we are trying to produce in Sim/Angus cattle. Rugged, big ribbed, stout cattle that have structural integrity; that will leave lasting impressions in your cattle herd.

TNT E-Z-3 X360 || Sire of Lot 6.
EASTERN COLORADO AND WESTERN KANSAS offer unique environmental challenges for cattle production. The area can be as hot or, cold as any, along with periods of extreme moisture conditions. Cattle must spend a portion of the year grazing low quality crop residues. Over the last 25 years Black Angus cattle have become the dominant breed of cattle. Heterosis is one of the few low cost management tools to improve pounds produced, heifer fertility and improved carcass quality. Choosing the correct breed to complement Angus takes some research. Of the wide variety of breeds available for crossbreeding Simmental seems to have the best fit. When implementing a crossbreeding program, calving ease has to be the first concern. After that, the decision needs to be made, whether or not to keep the females. We believe moderate framed, deep well-muscled, easy fleshing females are a must. We believe Simmental makes the most sense in a cross breeding program, whether or not you have a terminal program or a maternal program to take advantage of the crossbred female.

Parker Cattle Co. We are becoming big fans of the Bluestem cattle. They are production oriented, moderate, efficient stock with a focus on future females. We think this bull has the quality to be a herd changer, on paper or in person he is impressive.

If you’re looking to string together a powerful, consistent bull battery; these Bluestem are the answer. The flush brothers’ dam is incredible. U431 originated from the Kappes’ program in South Dakota and hasn’t missed yet. Lot 25 and 39 dam’s are daughters of U431.

This might be Reed’s favorite spring bull in the offering. He has an awesome look from side and reads with plenty of genuine muscle. His mother was U431’s first calf and looks like she will be following her mother footsteps into the donor pen.

WE CAN HELP YOU get the most out of your bull purchase by helping you implement an AI program. We have been breeding cattle professionally for over 15 years. Following some basic guidelines can make an AI program a success. Research tells us cows greater than 50 days post-partum have a significantly greater chance to become pregnant than those having calves more recently. Before you begin calving choose the day you wish to begin your breeding season. Count back 50 days and circle that date on the calendar. Those cows who calve before that date will be your first breeding group. Those having calved less than 50 days can have a bull turned with them while group one is being bred. Or, wait three weeks and breed those AI in a second group. This helps your younger calves due to the AI genetics in some of those younger calves. During the busy spring season synchronization is the most practical method. The two shot prostaglandin combined with heat detection results in too many heats being missed. This is why a 7-day CDIR program with timed insemination works best. On day one put CDIRs in along with an injection of GNRH. Seven days later remove the CDIRs and give a prostaglandin injection, we like estrumate. If you wish breed off heat until 72 hours, at this point breed all remaining females. If you wish not to heat detect, begin mass breeding the cows 60 hours after pulling CDIRs. You must pull the bulls 60 days after the after the AI date. Forty days after pulling bulls, ultrasound your cows. Sell the open cows to save feed. A large percentage, 60-80 %, of your calves will be born in the first 30 days. It is a learning process. Generally, the first year is the worst, but you learn and make improvements. It will be worth it. If interested ask us for help. SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT AND BREEDING OF REPLACEMENT HEIFERS Many are considering additional heifers to breed and sell, some guidelines will help you make this venture a success. Before purchasing the heifers decide when you plan to breed them. Heifers need to be 14 months old to successfully enter an AI program. Buy heifers which are of above average quality, not all heifers born are destined to become a cow, the buyers will appreciate you for this. Nutrition is a must. Heifers need to be developed but not over developed to become fat. Over conditioned heifers can be as much of a problem as under conditioned heifers. Develop them so they are in a BCS of 5-6 but not more. All vaccinations need to have been given at least 30 days prior to breeding. If you breed them AI, use quality semen from a proven bull. Buy your semen directly from a distributor, not from another producer [you do not know if it has been handled properly]. We have quality semen available from ABS-Global and Allied Genetic Resources. If you need your heifers bred, we can do it. It is possible to breed them outside the corral. It all takes planning and commitment. The days you are breeding the heifers, it does need to be the most important thing you do that day. Cutting corners only leads to poor results. We can also breed your heifers at our ranch. So give us a call. You will find an AI program can reduce bull power and assure you get the calves you desire. 970-597-0831

Parker Cattle Co. ASA QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDS, INDEXES AND $VALUES
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.) BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days. BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight. CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days. DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile). MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days. MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.) WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days. $ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $indexes, visit: www.simmental.org
Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or purebreds with hybrids — our system was not developed to make valid comparison among these groups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.

LET OUR FULL CIRCLE ALLIED TEAM WORK FOR YOU! Whom you choose to purchase your seedstock from is just as important as the individual bulls and heifers you choose to buy. Almost everyone in this business offers at least a few high value animals each year. There too is likely an auction sale nearly every week in 2015 that promises to be the biggest and best yet. You see them advertised constantly. With that in mind, how do you make that crucial decision on where to source seedstock? It is a decision that will literally affect your bottom line for the next 15-20 years? That’s right, many of the bulls you buy in 2015 should still breeding cows in 2020 or beyond. That means the 10 year old cows that have made your operation profitable in the year 2031 will very likely be sired by those bulls. Does your seedstock supplier have a plan to still be providing you service in 2031 and beyond? The member owners of Allied Genetic Resources do have a plan for the future. Market development and enhancement, value added programs, genetic decision support and strong allied industry relationships all are part of the long term approach employed by Allied. We know the genetics business will change. The profitability we are enjoying in the beef business today nearly guarantees upgrades to the system. Already today, documented, high value genetics help commercial producers ask and get more for the cattle they produce for the larger beef industry. I absolutely guarantee this trend is with us to stay and poised to be more important every year looking forward. Logical change that effects profit usually happens regardless of the business, at least most places in this world. When folks pay a lot for something, they expect more in return. More consistent and higher profit garnering genetics will be part of the risk reduction technology and strategy that drives feeder cattle and slaughter cattle pricing far into our future. Make better decisions today and the potential to benefit years from now is a very solid proposition. What about service? Your seedstock supplier really only offers you a couple of unique value propositions year in and year out. The first is the proof and promise of genetic improvement. The very foundation for what these committed folks do everyday centers around offering better and more profitable genetics to customers, consistently. The other important factor that often separates one genetic source from another is customer service. We believe that everything else besides the non-negotiable genetic improvement that you should demand from your supplier can be lumped under the heading of service. Bulls developed properly and tested fertile in order to breed a maximum number of females in year 1 then last for 5-7 years is an important service. Friendly delivery terms, a great selection of genetics, customer satisfaction based warranty terms and even a comfortable sale day atmosphere with hot coffee and a good lunch are all, to some extent services. By the way if your seedstock producer does not warranty the bulls they sell to your satisfaction, we can find you and Allied breeder that will. Even the reputation of the genetic supplier you choose has impact on feeder prices at sale time. The member owners of Allied Genetic Resources show their commitment to customer service by concentrating on customer success. The Allied logo is a guarantee of value in itself. Every one of the Allied breeder network, more than 20,000 seedstock cows strong has made the commitment to enhanced opportunities available to the best group of commercial producers in the land, their customers. Allied is blessed to work with the highest reputation and outwardly committed group of seedstock suppliers in the world. You’ll find only commercially focused, profit minded folks in this alliance. For proof, just check out our membership scope and service options available at www.alliedgeneticresources.com . Feeder cattle and replacement female marketing are available by contacting Clint Berry with commercial herd strategies, seedstock procurement and beef chain consulting from Marty Ropp. Marketing plan assistance and advertising for commercial or seedstock producers is available from Julie Murnin, and for seedstock marketing solutions plus online options to bolster marketing value both for commercial cattle and genetics contact Garrett Thomas. We believe you will find substantial value in our full circle approach to providing services to the great customers of our Allied seedstock producers owners. Look for the Allied logo before you make your choice for high value genetics with service.
