WELCOME TO THE SALE We send out a warm “nearly spring” greeting to you all in the hopes that you are getting your fair share of sunshine. It has been a tremendous relief to melt off after the arctic January we all went through. But many areas are also greatly welcoming the restored snow pack and potential spring moisture. It is a great privilege to be presenting this year’s bull offering for your consideration. So many of you have been with our program since the very beginning and we are grateful to think about you reading this now. The commercial cattleman is truly the heartbeat of our mission and focus and it is you all who help to keep us real and relevant in this business. The last step in preparing the catalog for you each year is to make some comments about sire groups, and our reference sire choices, and unique individual bull calves that have stood out in a noticeable way. We save this part for last in order to have all their data in hand and connect some dots regarding patterns or types.... This year, we all met in the morning and fed the bulls together, in order to get everyone’s input. It starts a bit formally-going down the list, accumulating the collective memory about a calf crop. But as the bulls finished their pellets and wandered over to bother us, excitement about certain individuals began to build. The boys started joking around about how best to describe cattle without making it boring-that was infectious. Each person has a certain sire group they favor so the praise becomes effusive and a bit over the top. Some sarcasm and teasing usually follows. But the outstanding net result of this process was to see just how much every single one of us really loves their cattle. Trying to scribble it all down in a notebook couldn’t capture the joy of seeing how a planned mating turned out, or how adamantly someone will defend a style preference, or listening to a description of a beloved cow who is the greatest four-legged beef machine to ever grace the planet, or how the new crop of calves is going to stack up and what everyone is excited about trying next year.... In reflection, it follows that our tremendous love for our cows is what you will actually be looking at in this catalog and in the ring at sale day. There is an imprint of the fiercely held memories of starting out with one heifer and waiting the whole agonizing long year to see if she would make another heifer! There are the lessons learned from poor choices, or misplaced optimism or stubborn ideals. But year after year we’ve built a cow base that has stayed functional and always pays the bills. And all this time later it is a cow base that we are each still deeply passionate about. As for the nuts and bolts, you’ll find the same data set and tools for comparison this year. The only changes are some reference sires new to Open Gate, and that the Scrotal Measurements from the Breeding Soundness Evaluation are not in the catalog but will be available sale day. The bulls were fed leaner this year and developed 100% in big open pastures. You’ll be seeing more of what you’re getting . . . In this changed marketing environment we all are going to have to make very careful decisions and plan smart so if your needs or mating strategies have shifted or evolved we would love to talk about it. We are dialing down harder than ever on traits and development strategies that keep more money on the front end of a calf crop and deliver more money to the ranch. Finally, we cannot emphasize enough the need to pay attention to MCE (maternal calving ease) on bulls you intend to retain replacement heifers from. There are more ways to address calving ease than just buying lower birthweight bulls. Cannot wait for the chance to catch up with you all! Buyers unable to attend the sale can purchase bulls sight unseen and know that when we deliver them - if you don’t like them, you don’t own them. ABOUT THE BULLS

The bulls are available for viewing at the ranch prior to the sale. They are near the main ranch this year, up over the hill and onto the bench. From Fairfield, take Hwy 408 headed west for 9.5 miles. Where the highway makes a sharp corner to the south, turn off onto the gravel and head north, up over the hill and straight past the main ranch. You’ll find the bulls on the right. Videos of the bulls available online www.opengateranch.com EPDs on both sale bulls and Reference Sires are printed as calculated by American Simmental Association and follow the Simmental definition for each trait. Ultrasound scan data was taken on January 17 by Sonya Gregory and interpreted at a Central Ultrasound Processing Lab. It is an actual calculation of each bull’s carcass information that has been adjusted to a 365 day measurement, which will facilitate accurate comparison between bulls. American Simmental Association provided updated Carcass EPDs based on the scan data. IMF is marbling as a percent of mass, BF is back fat in percent of inch, and REA is rib eye in square inches. Scrotal evaluation and fertility testing was done by Dr. Cale Bjornstad on February 20. Every bull has been ear notched and tested for BVD Persistent Infection and the bulls have had all standard immunizations including vaccination against foot rot. We want you to buy with no concerns about viral issues.

The Open Gate name actually refers to welcoming friends and customers to the ranch all year long and not for what I used to get in trouble for as a kid. Great hospitality and great cattle are at the heart of the Open Gate brand and why they have so many repeat customers. The Richert’s are really commercial cattle producers at heart. Because they run a large commercial cowherd as well as the seedstock cows, they just understand what commercial customers need a little better than most. When you treat your seedstock cows just like the rest of them, you sort the wheat from the chaff pretty quickly. The result is that whether you are looking at the selection of performance promoting purebred bulls or the deep, high reputation set of SimAngus, you can be assured that the females backing them will work in any setting you ask them to. Why We Still Believe in Ultrasound Our ultrasound technician, Sonya Gregory has been scanning our bulls longer than any of us could put a date on. We always look forward to hearing her perspective on the seedstock business and what she has observed as she travels. This year, she talked about the trend to abandon traditional carcass measurements in favor of Genomic Enhanced EPDs because the industry is placing so much confidence in the accuracy of these very specific genetic markers. Many herds are beginning to use this technology heavily. Here is one definition of the phenomenon: “Genomic results are a way to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits where it is difficult to measure the animal’s own performance for the trait, such as carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls.” Exciting stuff! As these tools become more and more commonly used, we have decided to continue to employ ultrasound as a “checks and balances” in our program. If cattle breeding decisions are primarily weighted by genetic markers, and those breeding decisions get compounded and compounded with each generation, we want to be certain the trait is actually manifesting itself: that the genetic markers have triggered and are doing what they promise. We also want to be able to see how our contemporary groups are changing year to year, in response to breeding, to management, and to weather. - PAGE 12 -
