Notes on Reading our Sale Book... When we sort through the stacks of Bull Sale Books we receive each year, we notice everyone presents their data a bit differently. Surely, this can get confusing-but it’s important to remember there is no right or wrong formula to building a catalog. We choose to present the data that is most relevant to the way we make breeding decisions, the way we manage our cattle, and the trends we want to be able to track and observe in each year’s calf crop. For example, we like to think of our cattle in simple, straightforward terms, that we can actually keep straight mentally and visualize. So we don’t include as many EPDs as we could. We monitor our trends on all of the traits and understand their merit, but we strive to effect change according to what most of our customers need. So a simpler data set works well for us. We continue to provide actual records of ultrasound, gain, and birthweight, because we like to see whether traits are truly manifesting themselves - if the patterns in a sire group show that genetic markers have actually triggered and are doing what they promise. Large discrepancies or inconsistencies in a sire group are a red flag to us and will influence our decision of whether to use a sire again. So please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of us if you do not see data you need, or if it is unclear why we include it. We would love to help you utilize better the patterns we see when we put it together every year.

ABOUT THE BULLS

The bulls are available for viewing at the ranch prior to the sale. They are located in the development pasture right off the main highway. From Fairfield, take Hwy 408 west for 9.5 miles. You will see the bulls to the north. Videos of the bulls available online www.opengateranch.com EPDs on both sale bulls and Reference Sires are printed as calculated by American Simmental Association and follow the Simmental definition for each trait. Ultrasound scan data was taken on January 26 by Sonya Gregory and interpreted at a Central Ultrasound Processing Lab. It is an actual calculation of each bull’s carcass information that has been adjusted to a 365 day measurement, which will facilitate accurate comparison between bulls. American Simmental Association provided updated Carcass EPDs based on the scan data. IMF is marbling as a percent of mass, BF is back fat in percent of inch, and REA is rib eye in square inches. Scrotal evaluation and fertility testing was done by Dr. Cale Bjornstad on February 20. Every bull has been ear notched and tested for BVD Persistent Infection and the bulls have had all standard immunizations including vaccination against foot rot. WELCOME TO THE SALE Horses have been a heartbeat of our family ranch culture, and there is always a team or two of draft horses waiting around for somebody to make time to use them. One of the most beautiful, and difficult achievements in driving a team is teaching them to work smoothly . . . together. Especially young horses tend to waste huge amounts of energy lunging forward or sideways, yanking against their team mate or the wagon, out of step, getting banged in the hocks and then flinging themselves into the collar. Soon you have a frustrated, lathered up, defeated horse and maybe some broken gear. It’s always much more successful to have a rider at the side, setting the pace, preventing drastic turns or change of gait, and building confidence. Eventually, a good team watch each other carefully, sensing pace and responses to the driver or responses to conditions and they smoothly, quietly adjust to each other. Tremendous work gets done when a team are smooth and quiet and when they trust each other. No one gets hurt, no stuff gets smashed up, and it is sheer joy to watch. We thought it would be fun to provide a snapshot of the message and focus that Spring Valley Simmental began all those years ago, and that the Open Gate Crew have worked at carrying forward: • •

1982- “It is our goal to produce Simmental Bulls that will benefit the ranch, the feeder and the packer, in TODAY’s economy.” 1988- “This year we have added ultrasonic evaluation of the bulls on test by Dr. J. R. Stouffer of Cornell University. This should be most useful in determining carcass value of live animals. Dr. Stouffer and scientists at Texas A&M Research Department hope that eventually, much of the beef grading in this country will be standardized with ultrasound.” 1988- First solid black Simmental Reference Sire: BDV Black Gold 1988- First SimAngus Bull calves offered for sale. 1991- First EPDs appear, for Calving Ease, Birth Weight, Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, Maternal Calving Ease, Maternal Weaning Weight, and Milk 1992- “We maintain our performance by selecting for thicker, deep bodied, long muscled, early maturing cattle. We find this type of cattle can maintain well on our range, and also perform in the feedlot.” 1994- “A Value-Based Marketing system is becoming a reality in the beef industry. This will affect both the seedstock and the commercial breeder, as the bulls you turn out this Spring could be producing progeny that will be marketed into this new system. We plan to focus on genetics that will market well in this grading system.” • 1995- “Our Sale offering represents performance, carcass quality, fertility, and a choice of red or black. We continue to cull hard to eliminate problem cattle and concentrate on balance which is well suited for both the commercial and seedstock breeder.” • 1996- “The bottom line is that we want to offer you the right options. Success for your herd means success for ours. It is your continued support that has allowed our breeding program to progress to where it is today.”

A producer must analyze his herd and its specific, predominant qualities, then match them with bulls that will successfully complement those qualities. This requires planning, time and homework, but the value of an effective crossbreeding program is unquestionable, and something that progressive beef producers cannot ignore.” 2000- EID implemented in feeder calves, with feeding and slaughter data published in the Bull Sheet 2002- “Why A Good Bull Program Begins and Ends With Great Cows”

That summary feels very consistent with the tools, priorities, and focus that we continue to emphasize in our breeding program: moving forward smoothly and quietly, while paying attention to signals from you - our customers, and from the changing environment of the Beef Business.
