oakdale elementary Year 4 | DSGN 410 | Fall 2016 Location: Oakdale Elementary School | Omaha, NE Group Members: Kylie Miller & Justin DeFields

objective |

We were given the task to redesign Oakdale Elementary School in Omaha, NE focusing on the learning suite.

intention |

The goal of the redesign of Oakdale Elementary school is to create an innovative and active learning environment that will improve student engagement, therefore improve their academic success. The problem addressed is how students are not fully engaged in standard row-by-row seating.

description |

The school is programmed based upon our site analysis. The north end of the site is parallel to Center Street which is very noisy and busy, while the south end is adjacent to a quiet neighborhood. We placed the more public programs on the north end to block the noise, while the private areas, such as classrooms, are placed along the south end. The building layout focuses on the circulation around three central green areas. The circulation is enclosed in glass to seamlessly connect the interior and exterior, so you can see activity happening in both areas. The building is color blocked, designating different colors for each area which provides way-finding for the children. Each classroom corridor has two grade levels with a shared common area to encourage interaction and collaboration between different grades. There is a small group area directly outside of the classrooms formed by the cubbie layout. The classrooms are divided by a white board folding wall that can be opened to create a collaborative classroom. Modular furniture allows classrooms to transform throughout the day to accommodate different learning and teaching styles. This active learning suite allows students to move around and engage with each other, not be confined to a desk all day.

pacific edge:

nursing and assisted living homes Year 3 | IDES 351 | Spring 2016 Location: Omaha, NE | 144th Pacific Street

objective |

I was given the task to design a solution for an issue I found with aging and the suburban environment during the research phase.

intention |

The process of aging can affect a human physically, emotionally, and cognitively. The question I looked at was: How can we help ease the transition of the inevitable process of aging? The Pacific Edge community is nursing and assisted living homes that share amenities with a 55+ residential neighborhood. When people living in the neighborhood get to the stage in life where they need more care, they do not have to leave their neighborhood and friends, they can just transition across the street into the nursing and assisted living facility. This is essential for the aging process because 90% of the elderly do not want to leave their homes.

description |

Pacific Edge encloses two garden areas which were designed based upon the idea of biophelia which is defined as the innate relationship between humans and nature, and concerns the need we have to be continually connected to nature. Views, sounds, and access to nature is what informed the programming and design. Pacific Edge allows for the elderly of all personalities and backgrounds to feel comfortable living in these homes by offering a variety of amenities, from social to more private activities. The building is designed to draw you to the central core where the most activity occurs. The west wing is dedicated to assisted living homes and the east to nursing homes with around the clock nursing care. Pacific Edge will help ease the transition of aging by creating a sense of home and community within a normally institutionalized facility.

freshly linked Year 3 | IDES 350 | Fall 2015 Location: Lincoln, NE | The Pershing Center

objective |

I was given the task to research food as it relates to the cities and to come up with a design solution to an issue I found. I chose to focus upon the fact that the Pershing Center is located in the middle of a food desert and the issue of processed vs. whole foods.

intention |

Freshly Linked is a whole, natural foods restaurant and bar, concert venue, and organic shops. This center is about raising awareness of processed vs. whole foods and linking people with information to encourage them to improve their food quality.

description |

Freshly linked is programmed so you can experience all your senses at once at any point in the building. The first floor is dedicated to the concert venue and whole foods restaurant and bar. The second and third floors contain organic shops that transform at night into private suites for people to rent out for concerts. These shops are also rentable for local farmers and artists to share their food and work during the day, bringing a sense of community to Freshly Linked. There is a large organic movement that links all of the spaces together overhead which also doubles as an outdoor seating area. The entire center of the building is open, therefore you can smell the food being cooked at all times and hear and watch the music performance. Being able to experience Freshly Linked with all of your senses is what helps link people with the information they need to improve their quality of food and life.

the labyrinth:

discover the path to your creative mind Year 2 | IDES 211 | Spring 2015 Location: Omaha, NE | 4th & 5th levels of Historic Old Market Building

objective |

I was given the task to create a coworking office for a user group of my choice. I was to then develop a program within the given floor plans of the 4th and 5th levels of a Historic Old Market Building.

intention |

The Labyrinth is a coworking environment for creative people to develop and discover themselves as designers and artists. Labyrinth is defined as ‘an intricate combination of paths in which it is difficult to find one’s way,’ which is how the creative process can feel at times. The Labyrinth coworking office will be a place for like-minded individuals to collaborate and help each other through the creative process.

description |

The layout of the Labyrinth itself is designed to lead you through the creative process. Different colored flooring and wall graphics denote where each activity of the process (such as ideation, making, and critiquing) take place. Therefore, the Labyrinth coworking office is designed to help you ‘discover the path to your creative mind.’

prairie pines Year 2 | IDES 211 | Spring 2015 Group Members: Christina Smith, Katie Neal, & TJ Von Riessen Location: Lincoln, NE | Prairie Pines

objective |

Prairie Pines is an old Christmas tree farm in Lincoln, NE that the owner recently sold to UNL for research. Using three existing buildings on the site, we were given the task to create a welcome center for visitors to learn the history of the farm.

intention |

The idea for the welcome center started with the question of how to expand the program of Prairie Pines to get more users out to the site. The idea is to create a multi-functional stage that can hold musical performances of UNL students which will get people out to the site initially.

description |

The history of Prairie Pines will be displayed within the silo. The deck surrounds this silo and contains a stage that can be used for many purposes, such as performances, speakers, or picnics. The idea is once these users come out for an event, they will realize the beauty of Prairie Pines and this will encourage them to come back to explore the site on their own. There will be nature trails to hike with tree houses throughout for lookout points. This will preserve the tree farm and it’s history as the owner, Walt, intended.

revive the library Year 2 | IDES 211 | Spring 2015 Location: Lincoln, NE | Architecture Hall

objective |

I was given the task to create a space in Architecture Hall library for second year students to revive, relax, or refresh.

intention |

After interviewing second year students, I realized less than half of them had ever even been to the library. I decided to take a spin on this project by reviving the library itself. I did this by creating a coffee shop in the back of the facility to draw students in.

description |

I interviewed the librarian to understand her thoughts on the lack of students using the library. She felt the reason more people didn’t use it was because the website interface was too confusing. I solved this problem by creating a seating area on the loft that has iPad tables with the library interface simplified on the home screen. This solution uses modern technology to help bring light to physical books which are becoming a thing of the past. This space will not only revive the students themselves with a caffeine boost, but will help them realize all the information and sources the library offers, therefore reviving the library.

Year 1 | DSGN 111 | Spring 2014 Group Members: Elisabeth Horne, Kayla Stock, Scott Mathine, Alivia Galley, & Seamus Mulcahy Location: Lincoln, NE | Architecture Hall

objective |

We were given the task to create an interactive art installation in the link of Architecture Hall. This was for an exhibition showcasing first year student’s work at the event ‘Linked In.’

description |

My team wanted to create a strong conversation piece that would suspend above the link acting as a social gathering point enabling interaction between strangers. We took objects that are normally unseen when used for their intended purpose and made them the centerpiece of a suspended design to accentuate their natural beauty.

library installation Year 1 | DSGN 111 | Spring 2014

objective |

I was given the task to create numerous paper models using different folding techniques and to then create a pattern using small, medium, and large scales of the design to create a module.

description |

Through this design process, I created a hexagon module using proportion, pattern and repetition. From this step, we were to create an installation with a specific use. I chose to create a vertical wall installation for a library that stores books and magazines of a variety of sizes and offers an opportunity for the user to sit and read.
