INTENTION STATEMENT Network Studio Fitness will act as a catalyst to help build a sense of community in this transient and dense urban area of Arlington, Virginia. This demographically unique area consists of over 50% wealthy, millennial families who see value in a boutique and personalized experience. Located less than a mile away from the pentagon, a majority of the population is comprised of military families who move often and seek to create long lasting friendships. Network Studio Fitness creates an interconnected group of people by encouraging the interactions and networking of kids and adults. In addition to improving health and wellness, Network will support building life-long relationships which are of vital importance to one’s wellbeing. It will be a place to get in shape as well as work while being part of a community of people with similar life circumstances and interests. Network Studio Fitness in Arlington, Virgina will be the headquarters with the intent to develop and establish locations near military bases all around the United States. Although network has a focus on military and millennial families, they are not the only targeted users. With the majority of people in this area teleworking or working from home, a Network membership gives them the opportunity to utilize the co-working environment, childcare, and studio classes. The Arlington market currently does not have similar offerings to what network will provide allowing it to fill an immediate need.

MILLENNIALS
The millennial generation were born between 1982 and 2000 (17-35 years old in 2017) are the largest and most influential generation of consumers. According to the US Census Bureau, millennials are numbered at 75.4 million, represent 1/4 of the United States population and $200 billion annually in buying power. Their diversity, size, and buying power make them a target for many industries.4 One of these industries being boutique fitness gyms. “Millennials are not cheap, but frugal,” said Matt Powell, sports industry analyst at The NPD Group. “They are willing to spend money if they find value.”5

“This generation appears to enjoy personalization and being the center of attention. This helps explain the value they place on messaging from products and services from brands that speak to them directly, or have been created specifically for them (Smith, 2011).”6 This shows that branding and creating a sense of community in a unique environment is what is appealing to millennials about boutique fitness gyms. They value authenticity, which millennials interpret as “real” or “trustworthy” in the context of brand values, personalities or communications”7 which is why boutique fitness gyms are so popular among them.

HOW CAN NETWORK STUDIO FINTESS HELP The square represents being healthy in mind, and is done so by your work life. The body is representative of PEOPLE REACH THEIR “IDEAL WELLNESS? To help answer this question I looked to the Vitruvian man who represents the idealized human body in relation to sacred geometry. It also represents the physical proportions and balance of the human body and how it relates to architecture. I abstracted this to the psychological balance of mental, physical, and spiritual wellness of the human.
the physical aspect of wellness and is done so by the studio fitness classes, and spirit is represented through the interconnected strings which are representative of the community or network of people that support you. The circle that encompasses everything is IDEAL WELLNESS, which is the result of being healthy in mind body and spirit.

BRANDING THE SPACE
On the circuit board, everything is connected and there are central connection points. An isolated circuit, highlighted to the right, led to the logo, as well as the branding of my space. In the reflected ceiling plan below, custom lighting connects the spaces together and forms circles at the nodes of community areas which encourages wayfinding through the space by drawing you to these nodes. Custom pieces throughout the building also embrace the idea of connection and networking.

HOW CAN NETWORK STUDIO FITNESS HELP PEOPLE BALANCE WORK, PHYSICAL WELLNESS, & COMMUNITY?
The existing column grid helped to start to plan out the building as well as the regulating lines of the Vitruvian Man’s body which informed the wall placement and the circulation of the building.
