What is sound? Vibrate means to move quickly back and forth. Objects vibrate and make sounds. The vibrations reach your ears. Then, you hear sounds.
This instrument makes sounds when it is hit.

Different Sounds People and animals make sounds. Vibrations make all sounds. Put your ďŹ ngers on the front of your throat and talk. You will feel your throat vibrate.
Living things make sounds. Parts of their bodies vibrate.

What is volume? Volume means how loud or soft a sound is. Your voice can be loud or soft. An airplane makes a loud sound. What else makes a loud sound? These things make loud sounds.

A falling leaf makes a soft sound. So does a small stream. What else makes a soft sound?
These things make soft sounds.

What is pitch? Pitch is how high or low a sound is. A triangle vibrates quickly. Its pitch is high. A drum vibrates slowly. Its pitch is low.
The strings on a violin vibrate quickly. They make sounds with a high pitch. The strings on a double bass vibrate slowly. They make sounds with a low pitch.
These instruments make sounds with different pitches.
The violinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pitch is high. The pitch of the double bass is low.
