PERSONALITY PROFILE

“Live More Life – No matter what it takes” – Peter Foo

P

eter Foo is a happily married man and a proud father of three lovely children. His oldest son, You Han is a dentist and his daughter, Sheyon is a 4th year architectural student at RMIT and his youngest son Yousan, is aspiring to become an engineer. Foo was born in Alor Star and grew up mostly in Kangar. He attended his tertiary education in Canada, graduating in Engineering and Architecture from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. This professional architect decided to take a leap of faith, and

very well for him. Now he is the Managing Director of Tradepoint Enterprise, which was established in 1988. They specialize in plastic injection and precision tooling.

and BBQ gas lighters. These products are marketed locally and to many countries such as Singapore, Indonesia as well as Brunei under the brand name Yeepi.

He believes if you had set your goals and you are willing and

Foo has more than 20 years of experience from his various business enterprises locally and abroad – mainly in China and Vietnam. BRAG talks to him about several aspects of his business.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

You went from being a professional architect to a businessman. How did that come about?

As a successful businessman, what is your advice for young business people?

I came into the manufacturing industry purely by chance. It was during the construction recession in the 80’s while I was out of a job in an architectural firm. But born as a risk taker I ventured

your problem if you die poor!

into a totally new industry. Did you have any business background prior to this? No, but I was ready to take up new challenges, to explore the possibilities. That was a bold move! Starting any business has its own challenges. Share some of the challenges that you personally consider as major To start a new business other than your own specialization requires lots of guts, determination, persistence and endurance to face the many uncertainties. Tell us about your personal strengths that have contributed to your business success

whatever problems come along the way once I make up my mind.

His advice for young business people is also very applicable to everyone. Being born poor or into undesirable circumstances should never be an excuse to stay where we are. In fact it should be a force that drives us to better ourselves and our lives. be lived to the fullest – no matter what it takes!

And to those of us who resent the negative situations that we have to face in our life, Peter has this to say, “If pressure, tension and discipline are torn out of your life, you can never be the person you can be.” Well said! Because many a times it is the unfavourable situations in our life that can actually mould us to become who we can be. Peter Foo is one of the individuals who is able to see the positive outcome from the negative circumstances that life throws in one’s way. And he has proven it by going from a jobless architect 20 years ago to the successful managing director he is today.

What else has contributed to the success of your business? Our sales and marketing activities are aggressive and effective. We have also secured good brand recognition because our teams are highly committed to provide excellent customer service at all times. Our products are not only of high quality but also have a proven track record of being safe. Share about your BNI experience, and how being in BNI has helped you and your business I joined BNI United Chapter in October 2014. I like the concept of Givers Gain where you farm the business and not hunt the business. Honestly, joining BNI has not helped much with my current business. But it has certainly helped me to develop new networks that can pave the way for new business ventures. Where do you see BNI in your future plans? BNI plays an important role to make you more resourceful by providing the platform for you to help others. And in return, others may reciprocate by helping you. Simply I also believe the

Mastering Mental Arithmetic Bring up the subject of Mathematics to a bunch of kids and the reaction you will most probably get is a collective “Ugh!”

M

ost children (and adults) have a hard time with Maths. They do not understand and see the point of it. They question why they need to learn Maths when devices like electronic calculators, computers and smartphones exist.

Why do we need to learn Maths?

Making Maths fun

In order to spark an interest in Maths among children, they need to first and foremost understand the significance of it in their lives.

To be able to grasp more complex Mathematical concepts, children need to master the basics first. Arithmetic is a branch of Maths that touches on the basic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — between numbers.

Do they whip out a calculator every time they want to make sure they have received the correct amount of change from the cashier? How do they know whether they will have enough money for lunch if they buy that new computer game? How do they estimate if they can afford to wake up ten minutes later than usual and still arrive at school in time? Mathematical knowledge boosts a person’s problemsolving skill. It is applied in school subjects like Science, Geography and History. A good understanding of Maths is required to ensure a good career in the future.

One of the most effective ways to learn arithmetic is by using the abacus, which allows arithmetic calculations involving up to 10 digits. When using an abacus, a child sees, touches and hears the beads when they slide them along the rods, stimulating and enhancing senses like sight, touch and sound. The usage of abacus enables children to have fun while learning. Instead of just learning theoretically, they learn by doing something practical. Children who master abacus will be able to do arithmetic calculations quickly and subsequently solve tougher Mathematical problems faster. After a child has mastered the skill of using an abacus, they will be taught to imagine and use the abacus in their mind. This method is called mental arithmetic. By applying this method, a child’s imaginative skill and memory will also be improved.

CMA : Creating great minds CMA Mental Arithmetic is one of the world’s leading mental arithmetic institutions. It was founded in 1984 by Master Tai Chiang Ching from Tainan, Taiwan, one of the countries of origin of the abacus. Tai was awarded the World’s Best Mental Arithmetic Trainer in 1991. Tai’s student, Lin Zi Yin, won the Mental Arithmetic World Competition in 1991. His other student, Su Wan Ting, achieved the Highest Grade in Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Examination in Taiwan. In 1998, CMA Mental Arithmetic was awarded the Best Teaching Institute by The Chinese Children’s Abacus Association, Taiwan. Today, after over 30 years of its establishment, CMA Mental Arithmetic is an international brand name in more than 26 countries and provinces in the world. CMA Mental Arithmetic programme classes train children on Mental Arithmetic, Abacus and Aural Mental Arithmetic. It also provides training for adults learning Mental Arithmetic, Abacus skills and teaching techniques. Besides that, the institution works with people or companies who want to conduct classes to teach Mental Arithmetic, Abacus and Aural Mental Arithmetic.

In 1992, Tai introduced a new technique in using abacus. This new technique makes use of both hands to slide the beads, instead of the traditional method of using just one. “Using two hands stimulates both the left and right brain and therefore promotes total and balanced brain growth in children,” Tan says.

Start them young, start them right Studies have shown that immediately after a baby is born, the brain starts to develop synapses (connections) between neurons to enable them to see, hear, touch and smell. By the age of two, about 1000 trillion of these connections are developed. Between the ages of three to 10, these connections are strengthened by repetition of an action or experience. The connections become permanent once they are strong enough. Weak connections that a r e u s e d i n f r e q u e n t l y a r e l o s t a f t e r t h e a g e o f 1 0 . T h e r e fo r e, i t i s important that children start learning arithmetic at the ages of four to nine, during the crucial brain development stage.

“Learning mental arithmetic will also train children to be independent learners, stay focused longer and be more

Ansmann Tan, CEO of CMA Mental Arithmetic Malaysia, says that they offer a lot of learning opportunities to their students to master these skills and train their abilities, such as: • Free online practices • Series of well-designed exercise books • International platform for all to compete in international online competition twice yearly • Quarterly international examination grading for children to upgrade themselves • Unlimited learning for further learning of advanced level • Smooth transition from grade to grade with no grade drop

“We let children learn at their own paces and we discuss with parents on children’s progress according to their expectations,” Tan adds.

Two-hand abacus technique stimulates left and right brain

Ansmann Tan is the CEO of CMA Mental Arithmetic Malaysia. He graduated from Nanyang Technological University as a Civil & Structural Engineer. He also graduated from Advent-Link SAUC in Singapore as an Early Childhood Education Specialist. Tan has nine years of experience in early childhood education and care both in Singapore and Malaysia.
