Duodenal switch Meal Guidelines After surgery, your stomach can hold only 1/2 to 1 cup of food at a time, which means you'll need to eat five or six small meals daily to get enough nutrition. With time, your stomach will stretch, allowing you to eat more. Eat slowly and spend 20 minutes or more at each meal to avoid filling your stomach too quickly. Stop eating as soon as you feel full. Every day, drink at least 6 to 8 cups of calorie-free fluids, preferably water. Taking Enough Protein Because of your small stomach size, you'll need to plan your meals to provide 75 to 120g of protein daily, depending on your individual needs. Include protein in at least four of your six daily meals and eat a protein supplement every day. To get enough protein, choose one or two dairy foods and eight to 15 protein-rich foods every day. Nutritional Supplements A duodenal switch impairs your body's ability to absorb nutrients from food. To prevent malnutrition, you'll need to take nutritional supplements daily. Your health care provider may recommend you take several multivitamins, along with calcium, iron and fat-soluble vitamin supplements every day. You can choose chewable or liquid form supplements or, alternatively, crush non-chewable tablets or open capsules and mix the contents with food. Necessary Considerations Large meals, sugary foods, greasy fried foods, high-fat foods and processed meats may cause digestive problems. Avoid foods like salami, cake, mayonnaise and whole milk, experts from the University of Chicago advise. Particularly right after your surgery, sipping from bottles, using a straw and drinking carbonated beverages may bring air into your stomach or cause gas, leading to pressure and pain. To avoid overfilling your stomach, don't drink anything for 30 minutes after a meal. Limit your intake of decaffeinated drinks to 2 cups daily.
