Closer Than They Appear Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. A rearview mirror collapses distance. Things that feel close are actually farther away. Emotions do the same thing. They collapse time to shorten the distance between the past and the present. This body of work addresses this phenomenon using two different kinds of spaces: the private domestic one and the untamed woods that surround. The small interior paintings look into a room from a point of entry. Signs of the occupants litter the empty rooms: a folded towel on a chair, a lamp left on, a half-made bed. The larger paintings look out to the disquiet just beyond the threshold: trampled ferns and fallen logs, messy backyards, the scrub of trees by the road. The road itself is a space of transition, the path that takes us from one intimacy to the next. In these works, I apply paint to describe a form but also allow the paint strokes to become forms in and of themselves. Figuration and abstraction coexist in a state of divided attention, just as the mind can focus on the task at hand while replaying a past experience. When the replay of the past takes over the present, the two become entwined. My paintings set up this same dynamic: the background becomes part of the foreground, eliminating the middle ground and compressing two planes into one. Allison Gildersleeve
