figure/Ground For the “Figure/Ground assignment, I positioned the default square in this layout and self-created shape in the second layout.

figure/Ground For this layout, I intended to create a cartoon-like donkey with bits of hair sticking out. 4

Tangram I created a “Running Man out of the first tangram. I wanted to give it a motion-like feel and designed it as a form of a running character.

Tangram I created this “Forest Under Sunset” out of the second tangram. I intended to use most of the “triangles” to illustrate the look of a forest under a sunset.

Tangram Version 2: I initially thought I can use one of the Tangrams I designed for Grids, but after seeing the Mid-term breif posted 3 hours before deadline I decided add a 2nd version.

Grid STEP 1: I used the “Forest Under Sunset as the base to work with the grid practice.

Grid STEP 2: I used yellow lines in order to map out the edges of the shapes horizontally and vertically.

9

Jing Jing (Allison)

Grid STEP 3: The red lines were used to equally distribute the horizontal and vertical lines I mapped out from step 2.

Grid STEP 4: I referenced the yellow and red lines created from steps 2 and 3 to find the overlapping lines. However, in my case there were only two horizontal lines.

Grid STEP 5: I counted a 10*10 grid and shaded the extra columns and rows in blue.

12

13

Jing Jing (Allison)

Grid STEP 6: By removing the extra columns and rows I was able to convert the shape into the 10*10 grid previously mapped out.

13

Jing Jing (Allison)

Grid STEP 7: By using the new 10*10 grid as reference, I reorganized the shapes and created a new shape that neaty attached to the grids on one of their sides.

Grid STEP 8: After removing all of the grids, I cleaned up the background of the new shape created in Step 7. This is the final work of Grid assignment.

Visual Variables Original: These are the five original shapes I created for the visual variable vocabulary.

16

Jing Jing (Allison)

Visual Variables Size: I used all five variables to create a demonstration of the concept “Size. I imagined a question mark as a representation of my idea.

17

18

Jing Jing (Allison)

Visual Variables Shape: In this demonstration I used all five variables to generate the concept “Shape. I created negative spaces to illustrate this point.

18

19

Jing Jing (Allison)

Visual Variables Value: I used all five variables to show “Value. By using a range of black I was able to visualize my understanding of this concept.

19

Jing Jing (Allison)

Visual Variables Texture: Above is my portrayal of “Texture”. I arranged each of the shapes with different values of black on top of each other to create the feeling of texture.

Visual Variables Position: To depict “Position” I enlarged three of the “Samurais” while shrinking the remaining.

21

22

Jing Jing (Allison)

Visual Variables Orientation: To render “Orientation I rotated two of the main objects I created to make the larger picture illustrate the orientation rather than simply rotating one object.

22

Symmetry Refelection: To illustrate the concept of “refelection” I used a “flower on the board” shape with flipped dual halves.

23

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

24

Jing Jing (Allison)

Symmetry Rotation: By creating a quarter of the shape and duplicating the rest, I could rotate each shape to meet in the middle and demonstrate the concept “Rotation.

24

Jing Jing (Allison)

Symmetry Translation: In lining up all the “birds” and removing a few of the shapes in between I was able to demonstrate the concept “Translation”.

25

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

26

Jing Jing (Allison)

Symmetry Dilatation: I created a visual difference for the same shape by displaying an illusion that the larger shapes are visually cloeser while the smaller ones are further.

26

Gestalt Proximity: My design idea was derived from the shape of bullet holes left on a target. This created a proximity of the object to me.

27

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

28

Jing Jing (Allison)

Gestalt Similarity: I created a link of “evil eye” flowers with the intention to create a pattern that shares certain “similarity”.

28

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

29

Jing Jing (Allison)

Gestalt Continuity : Leaving white shape to cover the pattern, I created the impression that the interruped shapes continues in different forms.

29

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

30

Jing Jing (Allison)

Gestalt Closure: I created a fallen robot head under the black background and a bounce ball game board under the white background to demonstrate the concept.

color General Color Wheel: I picked a triagle in my shape vocabulary to create this “flower pattern for my color wheel.

31

32

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Primary Color Wheel: I derived the sub colors from Red, Yellow and Blue, known as primary colors to fill the small triangles to represent the color wheel.

32

33

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Secondary Color Wheel: I derived the sub colors from Orange, Purple and Green, known as secondary colors to fill the small triangles to represent the color wheel.

33

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

34

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Tertiary Color Wheel: I mixed primary colors with secondary colors to create the tertiary colors. I then derived the sub colors based on the main tertiary colors.

34

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

35

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Complementary Color Wheel: I ended with five rows of complementary colors, in which the first and last are the strongest, and the middle is lighter.

35

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

36

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Analogous Color Wheel: I chose four main color tones to create this wheel. Each of the main color tone derives four other sub colors. The colors also maintain from warm to cold.

36

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

37

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Hue (Color: Red) : I picked red as my default color, and created this wheel based on the variation of the color hue of red. It contains brown, dark brown, pink, light pink, and etc,.

37

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

38

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Value (Color: Red) : I picked red as my default color, and created this wheel based on the light and dark added into red. It can vary from darkest to liightest red.

38

ART 102 Design I Mid-Term

39

Jing Jing (Allison)

color Intensity (Color: Red) : I picked red as my default color, and created this wheel based on how much white, black and gray I added into red. The colors can be orange red or gray pink.
