About Me A L L I S ON ELIZAB ETH B RO W N Growing up, I moved around a lot for my father’s employment and spent some time living in Utah, Idaho, Indiana, Colorado, and central Mexico. I am an identical twin and

the youngest of seven children. I recieved a bachelor’s degree in interior design from

Utah State University. I am a LEED Green Associate and my goals are to become a LEED

AP and pass the NCIDQ within the next 5 years. I am a member of several interior design organizations, including: IIDA, USGBC, and NEWH. While attending USU, I was the IIDA

Campus Center President and was named the Outstanding Senior of the Year for the

college of Art and Design my senior year. I participated in three internships while at

USU, one of which was in Gensler’s Houston, Texas, office, where I worked with some of the most talented designers in the industry. I am passionate about commercial design, sustainability, and elevating the profession through legislation and accreditation.

P AG E

For my senior year at Utah State University, my capstone project was designing

nine separate projects. I had the freedom to choose what my nine projects were going to be with the exception of action items that needed to be completed

throughout the projects. I am passionate about commercial design, therefore, I decided to focus on commercial projects in my senior year. I set my own schedule for these nine projects and mapped out critic dates and deadlines. These projects overlapped and at some points I was working on as many as

three projects at once. I allotted about six weeks to finish each of the large projects. These included: research, space planning, construction documents,

renderings, branding, and specifications. My smaller projects took around two weeks to finish and these included a breakroom, a carpet design, and brand design. As I was given the freedom to choose the types of projects I worked

on, I chose projects that I have always had a desire to design. I designed an entire airport in Banff, Canada; a luxury retail boutique for Burberry; a refugee housing community project; an adaptive reuse project, converting an old fishery

warehouse into a restaurant; a commercial office headquarters; and a countryside bed and breakfast; as well as submissions into three different design competitions.

My senior year was filled with tasks and responsibilities of multi-tasking, staying

on schedule, setting deadlines, and working with clients and evidence-based designs. I have also included in my portfolio, many of my strongest projects that

were completed during my sophomore and junior years. These demonstrate the entirety of the skills and abilities I developed throughout my Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. I hope that my dedication and passion for this profession are showcased through the projects and content that is displayed in this portfolio. Best,

Allison Brown

Banff International Airport is located 10 minutes from downtown Banff, Canada. The project is LEED

Platinum certified and has solar panels and an extensive vegetated roof with a small parking garage and a trolley for public transportation to downtown. The airport has an

international terminal and a domestic terminal which both have four different

gates with a central food court and lounge area. The building is two-levels, with

an arrivals floor and a departutres floor. The main floor contains a lounge, cafe, check-in counters, and a security checkpoint. Through security, there is retail

and restaurants as well as a lounge. The lower floor is for arrivals and consists of baggage claim, a rental car facility, food cafeteria, napping pods, yoga rooms,

stained concrete, are accented with forest greens and blues and artwork from the

surrounding areas. There is easy access from the two levels through escalators and elevators and mountain views and daylight shines through the many windows and

the glass, domed ceiling in the central core. Banff is surrounded by many national and state parks and the tourists that come to the area are there to hike, bike, boat, back pack and snow board or ski, and the architecture reflects this

culture and also includes an exterior deck with views of the national parks and fire pits to stay warm in the snowy climate. The interior includes a green wall and an

area that mimics the natural surroundings outside. The project started with

the idea of creating a space of experiences that was easy to navigate, had plenty of space for waiting and eating while limiting the amount of travel

needed to get to different gates. Sleeping pods provide travellers with an area

where they can relax during layovers and where they can wait for their flight after having explored all week in the surrounding mountains. The yoga rooms provide

areas for relaxation and rejuvination before embarking on a long flight home.

Public transportation from the airport to downtown helps provide a convinent, beautiful, and sustainable airport to fly into and travel from.

An Important Mission REFU GEE H O U SIN G U RB AN D EV ELO PMEN T “A refugee, by definition, is someone who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is

outside the country of his or her nationality and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to

avail himself of the protection of that country” (Cultural Orientation Resource Center (CORC), 2017). Refugees are legally brought to the United States by the U.S. Department of State. They may become

permanent residents after working for a year and can apply for citizenship after five years. They can

legally work in the U.S. as soon as they arrive (CORC, 2017).

Previous to arriving in their country of refuge, many of these refugees live in refugee camps

along the borders of their homelands or in a neighboring country. By the time a refugee makes

it to Utah, he or she might have lived in a refugee camp for many years. Some

younger people have even been born in one of these camps. Before a refugee comes to the U.S. he or she can request to be settled in an area where they already have family or friends living. This process creates some communities that are made up almost entirely of refugees (Utah.gov, 2016).

Many refugees that arrive in Utah have been through traumatic experiences before being admitted

to the US. Once here, it can be very hard for them to adapt to a new culture and language (IRC,

2017). All of these refugees are put into low income housing, mainly in the South Salt Lake area.

These apartments can be small and overpriced for these large families who are working minimum wage jobs. Most of the single mothers of these families feel the need to

have a support group and a place where their children can grow and play in a safe environment.

Since most of these communities are not integrated with non refugee communities, it also takes many of the refugee adults longer to learn English. This language barrier can be very difficult in going about daily tasks.

When asked about some of the biggest hurdles refugees face once they arrive in Utah, Tran, an IRC

employee, said “the language barrier is huge. Also, a lot of the current jobs we do here in the U.S.

require you have to have particular skills, and many refugees haven’t had opportunities to learn these skills. Many refugees have lived in refugee camps where they have spent 20-30 years of their life.”

In their home country, these families may have had their own farms and grew their own food or

shopped at a local market. Shopping at a large grocery store here can be very overwhelming. This is

also probably their first time using certain kitchen appliances, such as a microwave or refrigerator. Even

running water and toilets can be foreign luxuries to them (Tran Anderson, personal communication, November 9, 2017).

Research and inspiration for a refugee housing community project in Salt Lake City

came from some existing refugee and subsidized housing around the world, such

as a modular development for 200 Syrian refugees in the German town of Winnenden by architect Werner Sobek; the Dream Neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio; Orma Social

Housing Units by Alonso and Crippa; Vancouver’s fabulous vertical farm, Harvest Green, by Romses Architects; and Frankfurt, Germany’s low-rise, modular refugee housing.

After researching current refugee housing and interviewing refugee caseworkers, we have discovered many of the needs that the refugee population in Salt Lake City face. The following is my solution to address these problems: First, these families need

sustainable, comfortable, clean, reliable, and affordable housing where they can feel at home and find comfort in having their own home. We will be exploring the idea of creating a safe haven community for these refugees, a place

that will help them integrate into the community and have the opportunity to socialize with locals and become an integral part of Utah. I designed modern,

flexible, affordable, townhouses with a variety of

sizes for different family sizes and created a place where a family can create a home

they are proud of. The houses will have large bedrooms, bathrooms, a living room and

kitchen area, a personal washer and dryer and a small exterior porch and garden with

community rooftop gardens. These homes will surround a larger living-learning community that includes a career center with a makerspace and day care; a market; a community center with a gym and community kitchen; a library with study areas and computer rooms; a health clinic with counseling services; a large turf soccer field, playground, and sports facility. A large community garden will connect each of the buildings together and provide an area for families to grow their own produce. The community will have a small parking

lot that is serviced by local public transportation, and a small road that surrounds the

community, allowing access but keeping traffic away from children and the community.

This community will help reduce the stress these new

families face entering the United States for the first time, and will provide a place that they can feel comfortable

and secure. Having a place they can call home inside a

close-knit community will allow them to learn and

gain necessary skills in a safe mentoring environment

and provide them with the resources to become thriving U.S. citizens.

Beautiful Life REJU V EN ATE SPA, D RAPER, U TAH , U SA Rejuvenate Spa is a medical spa located in a shopping center in Draper, Utah that provides services from laser hair removal to

BOTOX treatments to any service that rejuvenates and brings

life back into the skin and body. The inspiration for the spa came from nature and the serenity that it provides. This serenity and

natural and neutral color scheme as well as through the materials

peace was brought into the spa through the

The medical spa is a beautiful place where people can come

to relax and rejuvenate. The six different exam rooms provide a variety of services from BOTOX to laser hair removal. The natural colors provide a clean and relaxing space that brings in elements from nature and water falls into the interior to create

a unique and beautiful space.

I conducted research on medical spas and biophilia; space planned the spa; created a full set of construction documents,

An Elegant Encounter LU X U RY MAN H ATTAN PIED -A-TERRE

One57, formerly known as Carnegie 57 and nicknamed “The Billionaire Building”, is a 75-story

supertall skyscraper at 157 West 57th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Christian de Portzamparc, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, designed a soaring tower that provides

each residence with

extraordinary views and abundant natural light. One57 is an artistic sculpture,

billowing upward in a cloud-like formation, while the elegant striated custom curtain wall appears to flow toward the earth like a cascading waterfall.

This luxury pied-a-terre in One57, a high rise on 57th street in Manhattan, overlooking Central Park, embodies the feelings of luxury, sophistication and relaxation. The pied-a-terre is

designed to be comfortable for intimate gatherings as well as for hosting large parties and

events. Sub Zero and Wolf appliances are used throughout the kitchen and the most luxurious materials and decor creates the space. The layout of the apartment allows for incredible views of New York City and Central Park out of the floor to ceiling windows.

The large entry way with marble flooring welcomes you into the space and is paired with a recessed ceiling, gilded in 24 karat gold leaf, creating

a beautiful entry that only begins to showcase the exquisite design and materials used throughout. The space embodies a serene color palette that is contrasted with strong blacks

and golds, creating a luxurious and relaxing oasis in the middle of the city that

never sleeps.

As you enter the pied-a-terre, a marble floor and recessed ceiling gilded in 24 karat gold leaf welcome you into one of Manhattan’s newest luxury apartments. The gold and white is

accented with black and light pink accessories. The Met Chandelier designed by Hans Harald Rath, made with hand-cut Swarovski crystals, hangs above a black B&B Italia center table and an antique rug in light pink.

For more than a century, San Francisco’s Fillmore neighborhood

Where else in the world could boast the debuts of both Al Jolson

and The Grateful Dead? Over the last hundred years, Fillmore has evolved into an eclectic musical mecca that’s rich in history.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more varied San Francisco

neighborhood for shopping, dining, and nightlife than the Upper

Fillmore, centered on 10 tree-lined blocks north of Geary Boulevard. Add three Lower Fillmore blocks south of Geary— where the highly acclaimed The Progress, and State Bird, and

Black Bark BBQ are thriving—plus a Saturday Farmer’s Market— and you’ve got the makings of a great walking weekend.

The specific colors derive from the small Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, which is one of the most familiar yet beautiful

butterflies in the eastern United States. The Tiger Swallowtail is easily identified by the black “tiger stripes” on its wings.

These two carpets are designed as separate components that

are divided by dark gray carpet transition stripes in the doorways

and create a coordinated flow throughout the space to create one large, detailed and cohesive design.

The World Filled With Wonders PR O J E C T C R OSSRO AD : A CO MMU N ITY PRO JECT FO R IN TEGRATIO N , H OUST ON, T X, USA

“To integrate Houston’s community by overcoming invisible boundedness as a crossroad

to encourage improbable friendships.” While interning in Gensler’s Houston office this summer

I had the incredible opportunity to work on a project with all the other interns. Our client was a local church

a mixed-use space that would fulfill their mission of helping the homeless and those in need and bring the community of Houston together. We created an expansive program that included 40 size adjustable subsidized housing units for single

in the city who wanted to build

mothers who were on the road to recovery after drug

addiction or incarceration, an after-school program,

workshops and maker space that would educate

the residents and other community members with skills

that they could use to create employment for themselves,

co-working space for community members to come a create local businesses and other

a

endeavors, an area for the Emergency Aid Coalition with

public showers and restrooms, a large event space for the

an art gallery, an outdoor area for concerts and events, a rooftop community garden and a bakery, coffee shop, and restaurant that would use fresh ingredients from the community,

rooftop garden, a barber shop, and bike shop where the

residents of the housing units could work and develop important skills for employment.

64

P AG E

The site is adjacent to three of the church’s other plots

of land and we created a visible path and “crossroads” that would connect all of the sites. The idea of crossroads came from the idea and desire of creating a place where people from all walks of life could come together and cross paths with people that would not normally come in contact to form improbable friendships and bring the community together.

We had nine weeks to complete the project and created a

marketing packet that the client could use for fundraising and getting support from the church congregation and

community members. I was able to work on every aspect of the project and was able to do a lot of research and

help create the program, floor plans, site plans, and restaurant rendering. At the end of the nine weeks we

presented to 30 community members, our client, and

the entire Houston office. The support that we received and the desire to make this project a reality as well as the impact that I was able to have with the community

I was able to help design a space that, now more than ever, after Hurricane Harvey, they stand in need of, and this has impacted the way I members of Houston and the church was incredible.

The project was split up between the 15 interns and each was

in charge of a specific area. We were split into three groups: branding, interiors, and architecture. I was put on the interiors team and I designed the coffee shop. The coffee

shop was created as a space to bring people together and create unexpected friendships. People are able to walk

over from the art gallery, or the co-working space, the maker

space, or from their own apartment in the subsidized housing

across the courtyard. There is seating inside the restaurant

as well as out on the exterior patio. The interior of the coffee shop is designed with light colors, natural materials, such as wood, green walls, and stone, and the

seating is arranged for many communication areas where people, friends or soon-to-be friends, can sit together at one long table

and get to know each other. The entire space is accommodating to those in wheelchairs or disabilities and the bar/counter can

be accessed by everyone; making sure all those who come

into the coffee shop feel welcomed and accepted. When Project Crossroads was presented to the client and the

community members who would be affected by the project,

there were tears of joy and appreciation as they connected to the space and could understand that it would be a great place

for rehabilitating the recovering addicts and the homeless and

bring together all members of the community.

and flower garden; a horse stable; an orchard filled with all kinds of fruit trees,

The bed and breakfast has seven lovely

features a small store where customers can purchase fresh produce, honey,

jellies and jams, and homemade breads and pastries, all picked and made on the farm by the owners, Annabelle and George Blackmon.

The New West Coast headquarters for URBN, an American multinational clothing

corporation, is located in an existing high rise in downtown Portland, Oregon. The company has a long history of fashion and design.

URBN is a portfolio of global consumer brands comprised of Urban Outfitters,

Anthropologie, Free People, BHLDN, Terrain and the Vetri Family. They’re a passionate, creative, entrepreneurial bunch who think outside the box and are all about providing a unique shopping experience while inspiring and connecting with their customers.

URBN’s new office in Building 654, is LEED Platinum certified and encourages health and

wellness for all of its employees. The office has been restored to its original beauty

and the two buildings surround an exterior garden where employees can have a garden plot and the vegetables are used for the food in Cafe 654. The office has a bohemian aesthetic and has bold colors that create a fun and creative environment.

Since the first store opened in West Philadelphia the company continually strives to

connect with their customers through unique products and engaging store design. Instead of transforming the buildings into something new, the original features were preserved, a trait that has become their signature look. The paint was striped back to its first layer,

exposed brick walls, and the use of original pieces as displays and fixtures were used.

The approach went beyond historical preservation – it was about maintaining a layered history, but infusing a new, fresh atmosphere.

The corporate campus fosters creativity and fun as well as a healthy work-life balance

for employees. The campus is a collaborative, creative environment where employees can connect and interact both professionally and socially.

Creativity is in the fabric of all the company does. It’s tangible in their store windows, their clothes and their incredible employee talent. It’s obvious when you realize no two store windows are the same.

In both buildings on the campus, you can spot a furry fellow. Not only can employees bring their dogs to work, but they can also take them to the dog park for a quick break. Located in the heart of campus,

the dog park is an area where pups can play and socialize. On any given day, at any given time, and rain or shine,

you’ll find owners and their furry friends enjoying time al fresco.
