MANAOIS, ALLIYAH DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS AAID 101 PROFESSOR MONROY FALL 2021

TABLE OF CONTENTS 01 ELEMENTS Introduction to vocabulary of space and structure. Solid void transformations present design fundamental principles. 3 exercises build in scale from details to site: 1. Wood Word Joints 2. A Volume of Joints 3. Out of Joint

02 ENCLOSURE

Project shelters the body within and from the elements. Rituals of inhabitation and contemplation are measured and mapped. Perimeter mambrane defines the spatial character of two rooms, directed to sky and horizon. 1. Up and down bodies 2.Second Skin 3. Porous Skin 4. Above and Below Rooms

03 PASSAGE

Project bridges the earth and sky (rooms). A spatial itinerary navigates varying spatial and phenomenal conditions. A stair elevates the body and narrative. 1. In a moment 2.Bridge 3. Gait

ELEMENTS

WOOD WORD JOINTS

AXIALLY EXPANDING

Combine language and material. The joints are examined for conceptual and structural clarity. A word play operates the joint along x, y, and z.

INTERNALLY INTERSECTING

DADO JOINT

PROPORTIONALLY INTERLOCKING

A type of joint that is easy to make and makes on of the strongest types of joints that handles heavy objects: shelves, appliances and tools.

VOLUME OF JOINTS 1/3

Combines tectonic alliances established within a cube. Joints are rescaled configured and transformed. Assembly is dense and puzzling.

OUT OF JOINT

Aerates the solid state The joints are dislocated and extended along their logical trajectory Expanded field is an abstract site.

This section studies is to show four sections of the site from every direction.

A plan and 4 elevations of the site: front, back, left, and right. ALLIYAH MANAOIS | ELEMENTS | DEISGN FUNDAMENTALS I | FALL 2021

Choreograph rituals as space. Zones and implied boundaries are generated from the activities. A surface is inscribed to receive the bodies.

This is to show how the body can occupy the space with its dimensions.

From there I started to think of ways on where I can locate the 2 rituals within the site.

WORK

This is to show how the sun can affect the site. The first 4 photos show the solid parts of the site while the 4 photos under are plane parts where people can occupy the spaces inside.

This is where the two rituala were placed. The work ritual at the top of the site where it’s easily can be seen from plan and facing West. On the other hand, rest sits under the work area although from the opposite direction where it is facing the North.

This is the plan portion and cutting section of the site. Where clipping plane is used to show the place thoroughly and shading black the areas which remain solid. 02

03 PASSAGE

Last part of the project is to create horizontal and vertical passages for people to use in going from one place to another. As well as adding elevations and sections to understand where the stairs lead to in the site.

Every set of stairs corresponds its plans and section(s) to the right side.
