for an American-style breakfast, she explained, you would see that it got lost in translation. “You get a cup of weak coffee the size of a soup bowl and a slice of white bread,” she said. They also ate at Fatz Hamburger House, a restaurant owned by Kenji’s second cousin. “Hamburgers and fries are becoming very popular over there,” she said. “They have plenty of McDonald’s too.” To thank the Hagas for hosting them, she and John took them to the Kabukiza Theater, the one of the oldest and most famous theaters in Tokyo. “They present very old plays, with men playing the part of the women,” she said. “The Hagas had never been even

Though her pearls and black wool dress suit would not have been out of place in an American office, many of the students sported their own wild designs, including silver platform sandals with orange socks. One boy wore a bright blue ruffled jacket. And though she only was there for less than a week, she got a chance to see her friend Mrs. Tatsumi, who she’s stayed in touch with ever since her friend’s husband helped arrange John and Kazumi’s wedding in the late ‘80s. “When she met me at the train station, she just about bowled me

Pamela L. Matthews, 61; Helped Establish Colored Troops Institute ONEONTA – Pamela L. Matthews, 61, secretary of the United States Colored Troops Institute at Hartwick College, died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Fox Hospital. She was born May 29, 1952, in Fox Hill, Nassau, The Bahamas, a daughter of the late Vera Ann and Clifford Ashland Davis, a retired manager of the legendary Players Club of Gramercy Park. On May 26, 1973, she married Harry Bradshaw Matthews in Great Neck. Pamela worked for 15 years at Fox Hospital. In 1998, she joined her husband and others in establishing the national member-
ship organization, the United States Colored Troops Institute for Local History and Family Pamela Matthews Research, headquartered at Hartwick, and served as its long-term secretary. She enjoyed exhibiting her decorating talents and mentoring young women. She co-founded the privately owned Matthews Collection for the Preservation of African American Freedom Jour-
ney Classics, documenting the Underground Railroad, anti-slavery movement, and the involvement of African Americans in wars from the Revolution through World War II. In addition to her husband, Pamela is survived by her sisters, Karen Mathews and Peggy Davis of Los Angeles, Calif., and Elizabeth Esposito of Reading, Pa.; two aunts, Susan Kelly of Ridgefield Park, N.J., and Mildred Taylor of Nassau, The Bahamas, as well as inlaws Maria Carter of Glen Allen, Va., Gloria Matthews of Covington, Ga., Celes Young of Roosevelt, Charles Matthews of Freeport, and Howard Matthews of
Uniondale. Pamela is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Pamela was predeceased by her parents and Aunt Nettie Roberts and Uncle Gerald Roberts, Sr. A celebration of the life of Pamela will be held in the Oneonta area Saturday, June 21, for family and friends. Location and time will be announced prior to the service. Please forward condolences and requests for information to Harry Bradshaw Matthews, P.O. Box 107, Oneonta, NY 13820. Kuzminski Launched Tripp Into 12-Year Political Career TRIPP/From B3 and Tripp was left to evolve New York History as he might. His guiding principle: Readability. “That’s where literary quality comes in,” he reflected. He particularly appreciated a note from a subscriber who “loved reading it, before handing it off to the farmer down the road.” From 1973 to 1984, he also served as director of the NYSHA library. In all, Tripp would serve seven NYSHA directors, and he can tick off the names: after Louis Jones came Peter Welsh, Minor Wyne Thomas, Dan Porter, Bill Tramposch, Kent Barwick and Gib Vincent. Because of all that typing,
he remembers his secretaries most fondly: Ann Bland, Jane Ann Russell, (wife of his Village Board colleague, Giles Russell) and, of longest tenure, Carole Mihalko of Fly Creek, by way of Barnard and a Peace Corps stint “... and she was good.” In 1988, Adrian Kuzminski recruited Tripp to run for Otsego Town Board on a progressive line. He lost that year, but was asked to run for the Village Board the following year, and his 12 years of service to Cooperstown began. He remembers the issues: How the Lakefront Park bandstand, built on an ad hoc earthen pile in the 1930s, had to be rebuilt to excruciating – and expensive – new state standards. It took forever.
All
A village administrator came and went. “It’s difficult to get a village administrator, not for a big salary and to live in the village.” And, of course, there was parking. He paraphrases former mayor Harold Hollis: “You’re dealing with a physical impossibility: You can’t get 600 cars into 200 parking
spaces.” Over the Tripp years, Cooperstown has changed from a farming center to a baseball-tourism magnet and medical hub, but he sees enduring qualities in his adopted town. Through it all, he’ll tell you, “Cooperstown is a small community in a rural setting.”
