Seated at wrought-iron patio sets amid bright blooming flowers and leafy greens, friends toast the spring harvest as Dana and Kristin Leonard bring out bright plates of the first of the season’s bounty – a spinach breadbowl made with Spurbeck’s cheddar and Neighbor Newman’s spinach, mushroom risotto with Raindance Farms asiago cheese. Origins Cafe Takes Off, Surprising 2 Partners CAREFREE/From B1 week,� said their mother, Mary, long-time operator of Carefree Gardens Nursery with her husband Brent. The dinner is BYOB and by donation in envelopes passed out by Mary before the dinner begins. “All people deserve access to good food,� said Kristin. “That’s part of our mission. Some people give what they can, others give more. It’s gone fine, and we’re going to keep that model going.� After Dana graduated from Skidmore and Kristin finished her masters at Duke, the sisters – CCS grads – were working with a nonprofit in Peru when they began to get homesick. They returned to Cooperstown and started a small food truck with a cramped kitchen and a mini-fridge. “Within a month, we had to upgrade,� said Dana. “It grew faster than we anticipated!� They focused on locally grown food, serving what’s in season that week. “Since the season’s just getting started, we’ve got mushrooms, beans we’ve been saving since last fall and people are bringing us winter squash from their own gardens,� said Kristin. And when they’re not parked at Carefree Gardens, the truck can be seen all over the county from April to October, serving diners at the annual Earth Day Festival at Milford Central School, at Brewery Ommegang’s concerts and even weddings. In the winter, the girls travel the world, studying beekeeping in Greece, or buying exotic spices in Turkey and textiles in India. “All our napkins are made by a home that rescues young girls from brothels,� she said. “They teach them to sew so they can provide for themselves.� They hope to continue expanding their food mission, including putting together a biodiversity learning center to teach people about the importance of local food. But as the weather gets warmer and the crops start growing, the girls will add a Saturday night Harvest dinner. “This is my favorite part,� said Dana.

The society is considering opening the program up to the public. “We have thousands of objects,” said Brzozowski. “We have pieces that explore the beginnings of IBM and Wilber Bank. We have the only portrait of Carleton Watkins’ parents.” Newtown’s report on Esther’s three scrapbooks, assorted photos, letters and the guestbook from her wedding, is the program’s first fruit. The first scrapbook covers her time at OHS, 1924-28; the second, her time at the Oneonta Normal School, 192831, and the final, 1924-1950. “There are such gaps in women’s history in Oneonta,” said Newton. “But in these scrapbooks, Esther is a historian.” In contrast to Natalie’s own scrapbooks, she told a gathering Saturday, April 26, at the History Center, Esther’s scrapbooks were deliberate documents of Oneonta’s history. “She took herself out of these scrapbooks, presenting history as she wanted it to
be presented,” she said. Though there were wedding photos among her personal belongings, Esther’s only documentation of her marriage to Wilmer Bresee were place settings and changes of Esther address. And tucked Bresee between two pages was a letter he mailed to her – “Honey-Dam,” he calls her – detailing his trip from New Jersey home. “He’s so descriptive and very personal for two pages,” she said. “It’s much different than how she presented herself in these scrapbooks.” There’s also a newspaper clipping about music during World War II and the notice of a piano recital she gave in the Hubbell Auditorium at Steinway’s 57th Street landmark headquarters in New York City. “It was important for her and for her community,” said Newton. “Music was a big part of her life, and this recital was a big deal to her. The town
was rooting for her to go!” Of particular interest to Natalie were the “Freshman Bible” given out at the Normal School and the “Vogue of the Social Telegram” pamphlet. “She wrote a telegram to her friend Marjorie that read, ‘You can come Friday am writing you letter now’,” said Newton. “What’s great is that the telegram booklet talks about how the telegram saves more time than a letter – but she’s using it to say that she’s sending a letter!” The Normal School booklet instructed girls on chaperones, permission slips and not “motoring” – driving – in the evening. “From our modern point of view, it seems a little strict!” she said. “But there’s probably some truth to the advice not to walk down Main Street arm-in-arm four abreast!” The remaining 99 objects are still being chosen by the historical society. “We want to make sure the objects have been vetted as the most important,” he said. “It’s an exciting concept to try and follow through on.”

Jack R. Iversen, 83; SUNY Professor Helped Fight ’60s Drug Plague ONEONTA – Jack R. Iversen, retired SUNY Oneonta associate professor of psychology whose involvement in combatting the 1960s drug crisis led to the founding of today’s LEAF Council, died April 21, 2014, in Albany, where he moved in April to be nearer family as he battled cancer. He was 83. He attended Chicago public schools, then studied architecture at the University of Illinois on both the Chicago and ChampagneUrbana campuses. He served in the Army in 1953-55, then completed his B.S. at Illinois in 1956. He entered Illinois’ school psychology doctoral program, but left before completing it to take a job as school psychologist in Star Lake in the Adirondacks. He
edited the newsletter of the newly formed School Psychologists of Upstate N.Y. (SPUNY), and was elected president in 1966. He had joined Jack R. SUNY Oneonta Iversen in 1963 and, in response to community awareness of the era’s drug crisis, worked with SUNY, Hartwick College, the community and Bassett Hospital to help combat it. Out of this collaboration came the founding of “85,” one of the first counseling programs in the state and an important resource for the community. Professor Iversen also was ac-
tive in the early stages in the community planning for mental health resources that led to the founding of Oneonta’s Mental Health Association. He worked with Bassett’s Dr. Robert S. Sioussat to address the need for substance counseling and support, leading to the founding of today’s LEAF Council. His experiences with these early community efforts led to his increased study of the psychology of addiction and the introduction of the course “Psychological Approaches to Drug and Alcohol Abuse,” which engaged him until his retirement. After retiring, he and his wife, Joan, and their dog Max spent winters in Key Largo, Fla., where they frequented the local dog park,
socializing with many human and canine friends. He loved boating and dogs (and dogs on boats) and was known widely for his love of “camping juice” (Mattingly & Moore), cookies, cashews and butter pecan ice cream. Joan predeceased him; the couple was married for 44 years. Survivors include daughters Nancy Smyth (David and Amber), Kristen Iversen-Cartwright (Mark) and Jill Iversen; and sons Tod Iversen (Cindy), and Terence Smyth (Shanna). Also, grandchildren Beck, Brandon, Haley, Kelsey, Jacob, Liam, Linnaea, McKenna and Riley. Max now lives with his daughter, Jill, who inherited her dad’s love of German shepherds. ONEONTA – Lois Shetler Herrick, 84, a distinguished teacher who, in retirement, developed her interest in antiques into buying and selling postcards, ephemera and collectibles, died unexpectedly on April 22, 2014, at Bassett Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Jan. 13, 1930, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Kempter and Gladys (Huber) Shetler. She attended Philadelphia

in New Jersey, Maine and Rhode Island before moving to Oneonta in 1960 and joining Morris Central School, where for years she produced the annual school musicals. In 1976, she published a booklet “We Believe in Music,” outlining musical ideas and programs for teachers. She wrote and directed the Village of Morris’ Centennial Pageant in 1970. She retired in 1992. For many years, Lois was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church and, later, of First United Methodist Church. After retiring, she was active in the Fox Hospital Auxiliary, serving two years as president, and in the Swart Wilcox House and the Greater Oneonta Historical Society. For 40 years, she often attended Lettis Auctions. She maintained a booth at Old Hickory Antique Center, Bainbridge, and also sold at many local antique shows. In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by two sons and their wives, Craig and Lizbeth (Huyer) Herrick of Liverpool and Kevin and Denise (Camp) Herrick of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Christopher Jason (Jake) Herrick and his wife Kerry of Syracuse, Samuel Herrick of Rochester and Brittney and Mallory Herrick of Oneonta; and one great granddaughter, Clara Jane Herrick. Also a brother, Richard Shetler of Strathmere, N.J., and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Pollock, 59, of Lower Burrell, Pa., who was raised in Cooperstown and went on to a 33-year career as a Presbyterian minister, died unexpectedly March 5, 2014, at Forbes Regional Medical Center in Monroeville, Pa. Born Dec. 2, 1954, in Boston, Stewart was the oldest child of Dr. Donald and Elinor (Hopkins) Pollock. After graduating from Cooperstown Central School in 1972, he earned a B.A. in Russian Studies from Hamilton College in
1976, a master’s of divinity from Yale Divinity School in 1980, and a juris doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1994, passing the New York State Bar Exam in the same year. Stewart was ordained a minister of word and sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1980 and served Presbyterian congregations in Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania during his 33 years in the pastoral ministry. Also, sister Corrine Pollak and her children Andy, Mark and Wendy, all of Milford; brothers Terry (Maureen) Holtje of Fort Lee and Bruce (Regina) Holtje and his children Keith and Loren of Franklin, Tenn. He was predeceased by his brother Ned and is survived by Ned’s wife Judy and their three children Danielle, Michael and Dawn all of New Jersey. Raymond Southworth, 86; Korean War Veteran Bonkte; they were married in 1952 and, following the completion of Ray’s military service, they moved back to Cooperstown. They first resided on Irish Hill and later, for nearly 35 years, on Chestnut Street (where Stewart’s is now) before moving to Middlefield. Following Hilda’s death, Ray married Helen Strong. He was a chef for more than 30 years, at Bassett, Woodside Hall and elsewhere. He was caretaker of Westville Cemetery.
In addition to his wife Helen, Ray is survived by his son Gregory (Cheryl) Strong, Westford, a granddaughter and great-granddaughter, and step-chldren and their families. A graveside service with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Hartwick Cemetery, with Rev. Rose Bellen, pastor of the Westville United Methodist Church, officiating.
