The task force that came out of the summit identified “priority projects” in line with the Mohawk Valley Regional Economic Development Council’s strategic plan, and tutored those seeking grants in preparing optimum CFAs (comprehensive funding applications.) The second round of grants, announced Wednesday, Dec. 19, were nonetheless a disappointment to many – the application for the largest grant, $350,000, had been withdrawn the week before the announcement. Thursday - FRIDAY, DEC. 27-28, 2012
WEEK 14
WEEK 15
APRIL 12-13 EDITIONS: The centennial of the Titanic’s sinking on April 12, 1912, awakened memories of steel magnate Arthur Ryerson Sr. of Cooperstown, who lost his life in the epic sinking and whose wife, daughter and son narrowly escaped. It also surfaced that the great-uncle of Ron Jax, Cooperstown General Store manager, had died when the “unsinkable ship went down in the North Atlantic. Below, a Celtic cross marks Ryerson’s cenotaph in Cooperstown’s Lakewood Cemetery.
APRIL 5-6 EDITIONS: It was one of the heartbreaker stories of the year. Loraine and Rich Tyler, retired SUNY Oneonta professors, were featured in an AllOTSEGO. life article in early March on completing their dream retirement home on Franklin Mountain. Then, on Monday, March 26, high winds whipped a spark from an ashcan onto the log home’s porch, and it burned to the ground. Above, the Tylers’ daughter Jessica reviews the damage.
WEEK 16 APRIL 19-20 EDITIONS: Oneonta residents were alarmed from Friday, April 13, through Sunday the 15th as six suspicious fires broke out through the city. The arrest of a 22-year-old man Sunday evening brought the incidents to an end.
Report of “suspicious activity near this 28 Ford Ave. home brought an arrest. No further fires were reported.
The first suspicious fire broke out at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 13.
At 1:22 a.m. Saturday, the third fire destroyed Habitat for Humanity offices at 50 Dietz St.

AUG. 16-17 EDITIONS: A new issue – the Constitution Pipeline, to connect natural gas fracked in Northeast Pennsylvania to the Tennessee and Iroquois pipelines near Schoharie, added a twist to the local fracking debate at mid-year. In top photo, Constitution’s project manager Matt Swift outlines plans Wednesday, Aug. 8, to Citizen Voices, the pro-business group gathered at the Carriage House in Southside Oneonta. State Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, who would be relected by a landslide in November, was among the 90 attendees. The debate peaked at a FERC hearing Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Foothills Performing Arts Center, where Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller was booed by the antis. However, the Otsego County Board of Representatives endorses “Alternate M,” which would route the piline along I-88, and anti-fracking leader Lou Allstadt of Cooperstown, the retired Mobil executive vice president, helped diffuse the debate by declaring the pipeline will not open the door to fracking locally. He called such linkage “nonsense.” Seward is flanked by Elizabeth Robinson, Oneonta, left, and county Rep. Jim Powers, R-Butternuts.

2012 OTSEGO COUNTY YEARBOOK
THURSDAY-FRIDAY, DEC. 27-28, 2012
WEEK 44 WEEK 42 OCT. 18-19 EDITIONS: James C. Miles, a hospitality executive with 40 years experience at Colonial Williamsburg, the Hershey Hotel and other top national resorthotels, prepared to take over at general manager & vice president at The Otesaga, succeeding the estimable John D. Irvin, who retired after 10 years. Also this year, Val Paige replaced Dion Wade as director of the Clark Sports Center, another one of The Leatherstocking Corp.’s signature Cooperstown institutions.
WEEK 43 OCT. 25-26 EDITION: Memories of the Bassett Research Institute’s heroic period were reawakened with the Oct. 21 news of the death of Dr. E. Donnall Thomas in Seattle, Wash. During his 1955-63 tenure in Cooperstown, Thomas led a team of physicians in early experiments in bone-marrow transplantation to combat cancer. Thomas went on to the University of Washington, where he conducted the first successful marrow transplantation. In 1990, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. “Bone marrow transplants now can cure 70 to 80 percent of the healthiest children and teenagers with leukemia,” the New York Times reported in its obituary.
NOV. 1-2 EDITIONS: In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Robert Behnke of Otego watches as Mark Hitchcock of Davenport sweeps debris into a pile after a tree fell onto the roof of the AAA New York office Monday afternoon, Oct. 29, on Oneida Street, Oneonta. Spotty outages were reported, and a tree fell in Westford, cutting a home in two, but damage in Otsego County was minimal compared to what happened to New York City, Long Island and New Jersey.
WEEK 45
NOV. 8-9 EDITIONS: Democrats at The Autumn Cafe, Oneonta, the party’s unofficial Election Night headquarters, cheer the announcement of President Barack Obama’s reelection Tuesday, Nov. 6. From left are Carol Schimmerling, Dan Butterman, Jamie Ormiston, Kathleen Avery, and Rachel and David Rissberger. Obama also won Otsego County in 2008, the first Democrat to do so since LBJ in 1964.

WEEK 47
WEEK 46
NOV. 15-16 EDITIONS: Throughout the fall, Otsego County was stunned by a series of tragic deaths. On Wednesday, Nov. 6, Delaware County deputies reported that Willis Brown of Franklin had shot his wife, Wendy, in their Franklin home, then turned the gun on himself. More than 300 people attended a memorial service Sunday, Nov. 11, at Foothills Performing Arts Center, to remember Wendy, an investment counselor and incoming president of the Oneonta Rotary, and Willis, a popular SUNY Delhi professor. That same Sunday, Guiseppa Avanzato, 90, matriarch of the Oneonta family, died from injuries received in a crash on Route 17 near Goshen. She and family members were westbound, returning to Oneonta from New York City, when a Jeep driven by an off-duty Peekskill officer jumped the median and struck their car head-on. Mrs. Avanzato died from injuries, and her son Vincent, who operates Ristorante Stella Luna with brother Tony, was hospitalized. NOV. 23-24 EDITIONS: The following Wednesday, Nov. 14, Annalise Kjolhede, 24, raised in the Cooperstown area, died in a Reno, Nev., hospital from injuries received in a back-country skiing accident the previous Saturday near the Alpine Meadows ski resort near Lake Tahoe. She was the daughter of Dr. Chris Kjolhede of Fly Creek and Anne Marie Gadomski. This was her father’s favorite photo, taken at her graduation from the Emma Willard School; she was also a distinguished graduate of the University of Rochester. In October, Robert Tirrell, 25, son of another Bassett Hospital physician, Paul Tirrell and his wife Julie, passed away unexpected in Los Altos, Calif., where he was a Silicon Valley programmer.
WEEK 48 NOV. 29-30 EDITIONS: Cooperstown’s Bill and Janet Rigby concocted a Christmas hit, fabricating a Victorian ornament, Sparkling Tin Brilliants, in their Elm Street workshop, from a patent they’d acquired years ago in New Jersey. When the news got out, their supply was immediately sold out, and the Rigbys were in full production through the holiday season to meet the demand.
