A bit of an oddity today, cigars were a large part of local life for nearly a century, with the first cigarmakers coming to Oneonta in 1866, a year after the D&H railroad. “They were directly connected,” said Bob Brzozowski, Greater Oneonta Historical Society executive director. “The tobacco could be shipped up from the south, and the wrappers could be shipped down from the Connecticut

River Valley.” Doyle & Smith was the biggest local cigar manufacturer, setting up shop in the 1870s. “Charlie Smith worked for the D&H and saw a business opportunity,” said Brzozowski. “At one time, they were making 10 million cigars a year and employed between 150-170 people. They were the second largest employer in the area after the railroad, and they employed women too.” Hayes & Bowish was the second largest company.

The industry was a significant enough employer to spawn a cigar makers union in the 1880s. Doyle & Smith closed in the 1940s, and with a cigar shortage brought on by World War II, a Mr. Stevenor, then president of the company, took advantage, employing one man and three women to roll 5,000 cigars a week in a shop on Main Street. By the end of the 1940s, machines had replaced the need for skilled labor. Smoking was still socially acceptable then, and Palace Cigar was a daily stop for many shoppers. “We always had a little something in there that was a little different,” said Rose & Laurel Bookshop owner Pete Molinari. “People would come in every day to pick up their paper and their cigarettes.” The Molinaris owned Oneonta Cigar for a halfcentury – 1930-80 – first in the lobby of the Palace Theater on Main and Ford (now Community Bank’s modern wing), selling cigars and cigarettes, comics, pulp magazines, candy and popcorn. “Kids would come over and buy popcorn for the movies,” he said. “There were all sorts of shenanigans, ticket swapping and such.” At one time, Pete Molinari held a brand-new (and, today, rare) copy of “Superman #1” in his hand, excitedly poring over the origin story of the most famous superhero in the world. “I wish I’d held onto it!” he said. “We kids didn’t save them like they do today.” Palace Cigar was also one

of only “one or two” places to develop film in the 1950s. “This was before digital cameras or one hour photos,” he explained. “We’d send the film down to Binghamton. It was just us and one or two drugstores, maybe.” The theater was torn down in 1966, when the bank expanded, and the cigar shop moved to where the bookstore is now, at 273 Main St. Molinari focused the business on pipe sales, citing the decline in cigar sales. “We didn’t get into the

high grade cigar here in Oneonta,” he said. “They didn’t take off again until the ’90s, with Cigar Aficionado magazine and cigar bars.” When Tom Oliver bought the business in 1980, he moved next door to 277 Main. It was sold to Peter and Lyla Bonnici in 2012 and closed this past March. “It was a different scene,” he said. “Nowadays, there’s a gas station on every corner where people can get their cigarettes and newspaper. It was an Oneonta institution. We were sad to see it close.”

IN MEMORIAM Elizabeth B. Greene, 88; Teacher Wrote Children’s Stories ONEONTA – Elizabeth B. “Betty” Greene, 88, a former teacher at St. Mary’s passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013 at Fox Hospital. Betty was born in Oneonta on March 13, 1925, the daughter of Ernest and Iva Barton. She attended local schools and graduated from Draper Central school in Schenevus in 1942. In 1946, she received a Bachelor of Education degree from Oneonta State Teachers College. During college she was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Arethusa Sorority and the Dramatics Club.

On August 18, 1948 she married the love of her life Thomas H. Greene. They were married for 59 years. Before getting married she taught in Saugerties and Norwich. After marriage, she taught a year in Worcester before temporarily retiring to bring up her three sons. In 1956 the family moved to Lakeland, FL when Tom became the Athletic Director and basketball coach at Florida Southern College. She resumed teaching in 1963 for ten years in the public school system there before they moved to Wil-

liamstown, Mass. in 1972. In 1977, they came back to Oneonta as Tom became the Athletic Director at Hartwick College until his retirement. Betty substituted in the Oneonta Elementary schools, BOCES and taught at St. Mary’s School. Betty was an active member in the Methodist Church most of her life where ever she lived. In her spare time she wrote children stories as a hobby. In her retirement years she loved going to the local auctions to buy and sell antiques. She is survived by her sons, Daniel G. Greene of

Newburyport, Mass.and William P. Greene of Otego; a brother, Robert Barton of Schenevus; grandchildren, Keean, Connor and Patrick; great-grandchildren, Breanna and Khloe. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas H. Greene who passed away on June 4, 2008 and her oldest son, Thomas K. Greene. A memorial service will be announced at a later date in January. Monica Wilber, 59; Home Health Aid Practiced Reiki Healing FRANKLIN – Monica Wilber, who devoted her life to caring for and healing others, passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, after a brief illness. She was 59. She was born in Troy, daughter of Robert and Jane Gibeault of Stillwater, and attended Stillwater High School. Besides being a caring mother to her children, she often helped other children with their troubles. She was a home healthcare aide, nurse’s aide for Delaware County Public Health, and an aide for Catskill Area Hospice for over 20 years. She volunteered briefly as an EMT trainee with the Franklin Emergency Squad. She established Spiritual Creations, selling jewelry and offering Reiki healing. She was a member of Franklin Garden Club and Christian Motorcycle As-

sociation (CMA). She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Sidney, and was a member Monica of Sacred Wilber Heart Rosary Society and served as a Eucharistic minister. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Tom Wilber, and her son, Tom Jr., wife Lucia and only grandson Diego Wilber of Virginia Beach, Va., and daughter Melanie and her husband Sasha Sandow of Nyack. Also, sister Mary Marchand of Franklin, brother Robert Daniel (Debra) Gibeault of Stillwater, brother-in-law Mark (Cindy) Wilber of Kirkwood, and nephews and

OBITUARIES Maryellen Wrubleski, 53; Nurse Practitioner COOPERSTOWN – Maryellen Wrubleski, 53, a nurse practitioner in Bassett Hospital’s Cardiology Department who had recently earned her credentials as a certified nurse anesthetist, passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening, Dec. 21, 2013, at Bassett. A native of Massachusetts, Maryellen was born on Feb. 1, 1960, at Hubbard Regional Hospital in Webster, a daughter of Richard and Dorothy (Brezenski) Dabrowski. She attended Loretta Heights College, graduating with a bachelor of science in nursing in 1983. She later attended the University of Massachusetts’ medical school, earning a master’s

in nursing and receiving her nurse practitioner certification. After resigning from University of Maryellen MassachuWrubleski setts Medical Center, Maryellen and her family moved to Cooperstown, where she spent several years in Bassett’s Cardiology Department. She recently completed post-graduate work at the University of Scranton to become a certified nurse anesthetist at Bassett. Maryellen was an active communicant of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the

Lake” Catholic Church. She chaired the annual food drive for the Cooperstown Food Pantry and most recently chaired the first annual antique furniture sale. Maryellen was a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend. Her ability to make others look inside themselves to become better people and her compassion for learning is what truly made her great. Her love was inspiring and anyone in her presence felt her overwhelming desire to help those in need. In addition to her loving husband of 28 years, Brian P. Wrubleski, she is survived by two daughters, Alexandra Gunther and her husband, Steven, and

Natalie Wrubleski; her parents, Richard and Dorothy Dabrowski; one brother, Mark Dabrowski, and her loving animals, Bentley, Zoe, Karen and Jinx. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary’s, with Father John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Index. Gertrude T. DeRonda, 91; Started Farm in Her Retirement

SPRINGFIELD CENTER – Gertrude T. DeRonda, 91, who moved to Springfield Center to start a farm in her retirement, died Friday, Dec.27, 2013, at the Alpine Rehab and Nursing Center after a short illness. Born in Annsville, Oneida County, on Jan. 8, 1922, to Albert Lent and Margaret J. (Kiley) Lent. Gertrude’s lifelong love was her husband of 72 years, Roger, and her family. She moved to Springfield Center with her husband after he retired and they pursued their interest in farming. Gertrude enjoyed fishing with her sister and spending time with her family. She is survived by four

sons and one daughter, Roger F. of Putnam Valley, Albert W. and wife Diane of Berea, Ky., Garry C. and wife Arlene of Spring Hill, Fla., Dennis A. and wife Susan of Stanfordville and daughter, Darlene F. Barnhart and husband Michael W. of Springfield Center. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; and 15 greatgrandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger, 11 days earlier, and by two sisters, Margaret Wakely and Jane Hamilton; and two brothers, Thomas Lent and Albert Lent. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with the Rev.

Marie E. Hinds, 96; Raised Family On Springfield Farm SPRINGFIELD – Marie E. Hinds, who operated the family farm in the Town of Springfield with her husband, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Otsego Manor. She was 96. She was born March 25, 1917, in Springfield Center, daughter of Helen Smith Ely and Carl Ely. Her father died when she was one year old and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Robert Gros. She was a graduate of Springfield schools and SUNY Cortland. She married George C. Hinds October 1945, and they raised their children on the Hinds family farm. George died in 1975. She is survived by her

children, Richard W. Ford of Syracuse, Roxanne Ellis, Suzanne Barrett, Georgia and Thomas Cantwell and Patricia Hinds, all of Springfield; her beloved sister-inlaw, Esther Gros of Cortland; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, two nieces and one nephew. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother Robert Gros and her son-in-law Robert Barrett. Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield First Responders or the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home.
